A NEW SPACE FOR CINEMA LOVERS — KINO & BAR IN DER KÖNIGSTADT

A NEW SPACE FOR CINEMA LOVERS — KINO & BAR IN DER KÖNIGSTADT

In this age of streaming, going to the cinema can feel almost nostalgic. But what if it’s not just a big screen, but a meeting place for shared experiences and exchange too? Harald Siebler sees his recently opened Kino & Bar in der Königstadt as precisely such a place. The focus at this Berlinale partner cinema is not nonstop box office hits, but instead carefully-selected films which can later be unpicked over a drink in the adjoining bar. “Classics, new releases, and little-known movies,” Siebler says of the program. “We want to show good films that arouse curiosity,” he says. This focus on quality is also evident in the interior: instead of tightly-packed narrow seats, Siebler’s cinema has spacious velvet chairs with plenty of legroom. And not only is this a pretty auditorium, but it is also unconventional: in contrast to regular cinemas, at Königstadt natural materials such as hemp, pressed paper and Swiss stone pine are used throughout the building. Time to put your next Netflix night on hold. (Text: Lisa Staub / Photos: Savannah van der Niet)

INVENTIVE COCKTAILS WITH FAMILY SPIRIT AT SOHNEMANN — RECOMMENDED BY WILL GLUCKIN

INVENTIVE COCKTAILS WITH FAMILY SPIRIT AT SOHNEMANN — RECOMMENDED BY WILL GLUCKIN

In the inter-kiez war to capture Berlin’s attention with exciting new bars, Friedrichshain has taken a backseat lately. Enter Sohnemann, a new watering hole just north of the madness of Simon-Dach-Straße. At the helm, and often behind the bar, is Sam: a born-and-bred Friedrichshainer with a deft, physical approach to mixology. Everything in the place bears Sam’s fingerprints, from the wood-and-black-tile interior to the well-matched playlist of smoked-out jazz and gently pulsing electronica. At the crux of it all lies the imaginative drinks list, with the F-Hain Spritz – a gin-and-lime refreshment with notes of ginger and hibiscus – a personal favorite. For Sam, Sohnemann is a family affair: the Opa Willi and Tante Käthe cocktails are inspired by childhood memories of relatives, while the shelves are stocked with bottles he was tipped off about by his friends. The liqueurs and syrups used for the drinks are often homemade, as is the bathtub gin. New drinks are being added all the time, so stop by and be surprised! LAMM — COCKTAILKUNST IN INDUSTRIELLEM AMBIENTE

LAMM — COCKTAILKUNST IN INDUSTRIELLEM AMBIENTE

Nicely set back from the street on Prenzlauer Berg’s northern border, Lamm is a cocktail bar causing quite a stir amongst the city’s mixologists. Hannes Lautenschlager and Dustin Franke opened this urban oasis in January 2019, transforming deserted rooms into a spacious and sleek concrete-walled interior. Subdued lighting and carefully arranged seating give it intimacy and warmth – perfect for a snug evening sipping drinks. And every sip is a joy: combining barkeeping knowhow and a good bit of imagination, Lamm quietly produces some spectacular cocktails. Also available in small tasting sizes, the drinks are big on fresh fruit and herbs, with the likes of peach, mango, lavender and rosemary bringing zest and punch. The walnut-topped “Waldorfsalat” is definitely worth a full glass, blending vodka, celery, apple and milk for a delightfully mellow taste. No wonder Berlin’s cocktail scenesters are flocking here. BRUTAL 54 FOR TASTY DRINKS IN A LIVELY SETTING — RECOMMENDED BY GEORGIE POPE

BRUTAL 54 FOR TASTY DRINKS IN A LIVELY SETTING — RECOMMENDED BY GEORGIE POPE

Since summer 2019 this cocktail bar has been the talk of the town, or at least Kreuzkölln. Brutal 54 was a previously hidden speakeasy, but its space in the Hobrechtstrasse is now open for all. Co-owners Silvan and Maarten transformed the former Raumfahrer bar into a sleek and concept-strong interior with beautiful lighting. Here, less is more, and the surroundings ooze with as much taste as the cocktail list. As a firm lover of both whisky and sake, one of my favorite concoctions brings these together with real panache, topping it off with a garnish of frozen kaffir lime leaves. Come to Brutal at the weekend and you’ll find the space absolutely buzzing. You can definitely arrive unaccompanied and find a space inside to call your own, settling down with a fresh and potent negroni. If it’s a casual weeknight beer you prefer, the bar seats provide the perfect perch. (Text: Georgie Pope / Photos: Savannah van der Niet)

BONVIVANT: THE BAR AND RESTAURANT SERVING A SYMPHONY OF COLOR

BONVIVANT: THE BAR AND RESTAURANT SERVING A SYMPHONY OF COLOR

A beautiful, eye-catching building in Schöneberg is the home of the new cocktail bistro Bonvivant. Inside the pastel-colored furniture and soft lighting exude quality and attention to detail – the perfect setting for an unforgettable dining experience. To start, try an aperitif mixed by award-winning Yvonne Rahm and served with a dash of aromatic bitters to intensify your sensory experience. The weekly-rotating dishes from top organic chef Ottmar Pohl-Hoffbauer are seasonal, local and all vegetarian. We tried everything: from a ravioli with blue banana and zappho pumpkins and king oyster mushrooms to the gnocchi with chanterelles, broccoli, almonds and lemon. But there is more to Bonvivant: the back room acts as a séparée with a round, revolving table perfect for special occasions. Head further in through the dark curtains past the freezers and you come across a hidden gallery in the basement. No matter how much you feel like a regular here, there’s always more to discover.
