PLANES AND DRINKS AT SUNSET — ROSINENBAR THF AT THE HISTORIC TEMPELHOF HANGAR

PLANES AND DRINKS AT SUNSET — ROSINENBAR THF AT THE HISTORIC TEMPELHOF HANGAR

Drinking at Tempelhofer Feld might not be new, but how about enjoying an ice-cold beer or refreshing cocktail right by the airport? Rosinenbar THF is a pop-up bar located in the former terminal that offers just such a high-flying experience. You reach the venue through the historic Werner-Loebermann-Weg departure halls, through what would have been security, then to the gate and down the steps out into a huge hangar. Usually out-of-bounds, this area is for a short time open to everyone for evening drinks. The venue is named after the Rosinenbomber aircraft which delivered food to West Berlin after the war, and serves up some provisions of its own with a fully-stocked bar plus food from the BBQ. A must-try is the Lufthansa Cocktail, which the flag carrier served to first class passengers in the 1950s and 60s (those were the days). There’s on-board entertainment too, with a line-up of jazz nights, film screenings and DJ sets, such as tonight’s (15.07.2021) reading by actor Marina Frenk followed by sundown music. Grab a seat and enjoy drinks with views of the Feld and the US army C-54 aircraft that still sits in the hangar. Sadly, the Rosinenbar will soon depart – it is only open until 25.07 – so consider this your final call for boarding…

KAUZ & KIEBITZ — REUTERKIEZ GASTROPUB FOR FISH AND CHIPS AND FRESH DRAUGHT BEER

KAUZ & KIEBITZ — REUTERKIEZ GASTROPUB FOR FISH AND CHIPS AND FRESH DRAUGHT BEER

Sitting in the evening sun enjoying a freshly tapped beer with friends is one of life’s great pleasures. Now you can add another venue for doing just that: Kauz & Kiebitz, Sven Breitenbruch’s Neukölln gastropub which has gained a solid reputation amongst beer fans since opening 2015. Behind the bar are 12 draught beers to choose, many from local breweries including the Pils and Pale Ale from Berliner Berg, the New England IPA from Brewdog Berlin and the Golden Ale from Brauhaus Neulich. While this welcoming corner pub is the perfect place for drinks, the new food menu is well worth checking out, with classic finger food contrasted with modern, seasonal cuisine. Popular with regulars is the Fish & Chips Fridays where the team serve up fresh, sustainable cod alongside classic UK-style chips and mushy peas. If you fancy something lighter, there’s also an always-changing menu of seasonal dishes developed by chef Georgios Kitsos in collaboration with the bar team. Drinks wise, there’s the Rhabarberbarbara: a cocktail made with pisco, saké, rhubarb shrub, lime, cucumber spirit and crémant that comes courtesy from Truffle Pig, the speakeasy bar located behind Kauz & Kiebitz and accessed by pressing a button by a door at the back. After-work drinks with relaxed vibes: check!

BAR AM UFER: CANALSIDE CORNER FOR ALL-DAY DRINKS AND LIGHT BITES

BAR AM UFER: CANALSIDE CORNER FOR ALL-DAY DRINKS AND LIGHT BITES

Where do the club kids go when the dancefloors are closed? Bar am Ufer, the all-day cafe-bar from the team behind techno mecca Griessmuehle, must be high up on the list. Located on a sunny corner by the Treptower Brücke, the canalside space used to house an old Eckkneipe before it was taken over by the club – by then closed due to Corona – in May 2020. As its shorter name BAU suggests, the crew built the whole bar themselves, from the geometric metal-and-concrete tables to the rescued office chairs donated by a fan of the club. Hot and cold drinks and small dishes come with laid-back vibes included, and you feel as welcome coming for a morning cappuccino and cake (they open from 9h!) as you do for sunset drinks with a grilled-cheese sandwich. Speaking of drinks: try the homemade lemonade with fresh mint and ginger for the perfect sweet-sour balance or, for something stronger, one of the well-presented classic cocktails like the piquant Bloody Mary. The perfect recipe for an evening of drinks by the canal – even if there’s no techno thud… (Text: Benji Haughton / Photos: Ramona Razaghmanesh & Bar am Ufer)

SHED — NATURAL WINE BAR AND DELI FOR SMALL-BATCH BOTTLES AND SEASONAL PLATES

SHED — NATURAL WINE BAR AND DELI FOR SMALL-BATCH BOTTLES AND SEASONAL PLATES

In January 2020, Darius Suski and Łukasz Sołowiej opened Shed, a wine bar and deli that sits unassumingly on the corner of Pannierstraße and Pflügerstraße just a few minutes walk from the pair’s other restaurant, W Pizza. The space feels curated as if the goal is to build Berlin’s dream apartment, starting with the marble tables adorned with flowers by Maggie Coker from Rag and Bone Man. Tiles are offset by wood details, giving the stripped-back space a homely texture, while an asymmetric rise built into the ceiling mimics a shed. The extensive natural wine menu features bottles from small-scale vineyards that aren’t stocked elsewhere in Germany, making each drop a new experience for the palette. Try sparkling wines from Czech Republic, or wine aged in oak for 14 months. To accompany is a small but carefully-selected changing food menu: opt for the charcuterie and cheese board, or dive further into one of their meals such as the homemade three-day brisket served with fried capers and fresh sourdough. In a rush? You can pick up bottles and Italian larder goods to go! (Text: Scarlett Peeters / Photos: Savannah van der Niet & Sophie Döring)

HANDCRAFTED COCKTAILS AND FINE BREWS AT OMEGA BAR — RECOMMENDED BY MARIE SPRINGER

HANDCRAFTED COCKTAILS AND FINE BREWS AT OMEGA BAR — RECOMMENDED BY MARIE SPRINGER

Where should we head tonight: a pub or a cocktail bar? Here, hidden in the heart of Neukölln, you can do both. At Omega Bar, opened by the Krass Bösen Wolf team in 2013 you can get good draught beer and excellent cocktails all under one roof. The pub’s charm and relaxed industrial style makes it great for after work drinks and weekend meetups too. Omega’s patrons are mainly neighbors and regulars, and you can be sure you will be welcomed like a local. With names like Cornelius and Donald, the ten cocktails are playful and distinctive. Popcorn, cornflakes and mango ayran may not be classic cocktail ingredients, but they are combined here with true mixological sophistication. My favorite: the Vivien, a twist on the Pornstar Martini with vodka, passion fruit and vanilla, mixed with soy milk and a splash of champagne. The homemade shots are also a must.
