JOIN MOTEL BEER & COFFEE FOR THEIR NEXT TOUR AND TASTING

JOIN MOTEL BEER & COFFEE FOR THEIR NEXT TOUR AND TASTING

For any excursion from a picnic in the park to a road trip to the lake – Motel has you covered. The brand offers beer and coffee in distinct aluminum cans imbued with mid-century modern motifs designed by Creative Director Marie Stadelmann. Under the guidance of Peter Read, the head of beer, Motel sells a delicious IPA, a Pale Ale, a Golden Ale and a Kellerbier alongside a rotation of seasonal brews. Cory Andreen, co-founder of the Berlin Coffee Festival, leads their coffee operations. Using beans sourced from cooperatives and natural farms, they’ve developed a canned Nitro Coffee and a Flat White that even foams when you open it. How does this all work? Find out for yourself: This Sunday 10.03.2019, you’re invited to a free guided tour through their production facilities, a microbrewery in Reinickendorf. If you’re satisfied with their tasty drinks, find more refreshments at some of your favorite bars and shops like BrewDogs and Lager Lager. Alternatively, ask their head of operations, Travis Wilson, how to get a case delivered to your office. (Text: Michael Rice / Photos: Motel Beer & Coffee)

ZOSSE — A LIVELY BAR TUCKED AWAY IN A SLEEPY ALLEY

ZOSSE — A LIVELY BAR TUCKED AWAY IN A SLEEPY ALLEY

On a quiet side street in the historic Rixdorf neighborhood, you may come across a discreet sidewalk sign pointing down an alley. Follow its lead, and you’ll be charmed to discover Zosse. Opened in June 2018 by Paul Seifert, this bucolic bar finds its home in a former blacksmith’s workshop. Records stretching back as far as 1888 describe how the original tenants forged horseshoes, hence the name Zosse – an old German word for horse. Once you’ve pushed past the large, barn-like doors, you’ll be greeted by wood-clad walls, soft candlelight and, in winter, a roaring wood-burning stove. Take a seat and pore over their toothsome list of house-made drinks and bar snacks while nibbling on their zesty popcorn. The newest addition to their menu and our personal favorite is the Old Islay Bramble Sour, a blend of whiskey and bramble liqueur (derived from blackberries). Across the courtyard from the main room is their retro smoking room, accented with industrial lamps, a typewriter, and daguerreotype photos. In summer, take a seat in the Biergarten and enjoy a drink al fresco. (Text: Michael Rice / Photos: Pamina Aichhorn)

DR. MAURY — FINE WINES AND DELECTABLE SMALL PLATES

DR. MAURY — FINE WINES AND DELECTABLE SMALL PLATES

Dr. Maury is a casual wine bar opened in Summer 2018 by the same restaurateurs behind the French bistro Les Valseuses. Owner Olivier Lapeyre greets me with a warm smile and casual air, offering a funky red wine with pepper notes. They have a rotating wine list but often stray from the menu. “We open what we feel at the time.” He uncorks a second wine, a vivid Malbec fermented with pressurized grapes. The focus at Dr. Maury remains wine, but the small plates are more than satisfactory, showcasing the duo’s background in gastronomy. Their chipped gouda with sugar beet reduction and onions is a careful orchestration of flavors that balance perfectly with the Jurancon Noir or something a bit more tannic like Château Peyrat. The creamy artichoke spread is also a must-try when you visit. “In France,” Olivier recounts, “wine used to be part of your wages.” That same knowledgeable but unfussy approach extends to their occasional events. They’ve held a blind taste test of natural wines as well as an exhibition of vintage skateboard stickers, so stay on the lookout for what’s next. Drop by for a glass of whatever’s pouring that night. FREUNDSCHAFT — A NEXT-LEVEL WINE BAR FOR SIPPING IN STYLE

FREUNDSCHAFT — A NEXT-LEVEL WINE BAR FOR SIPPING IN STYLE

When a drinking occasion calls for expertise, service and a selection nothing short of excellent, may we point you in the direction of Freundschaft, the new(ish) venture of two Berlin wine oracles with Austrian roots — Willi Schlögl (formerly of Cordobar) und Johannes Schellhorn (ex-Nobelhart & Schmutzig) — in connection with the Grill Royal Group. As the bar’s name conveys, the idea is to serve top-notch wine in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere — hence the no-reservations policy and the expansive 40-seat oval bar that invites you to take a seat and pore over the 500-position menu, presented in a sultry dark green tome. Better yet, ask for a recommendation: there’s a large selection of naturals, plus options by the glass (15 bottles are open). Don’t pass up an glass of “Dein Bester Freund” (“Your Best Friend”), a special 2L Doppler house edition bottle produced by with Weingut Tement in Südsteiermark. A rotating selection of simple small dishes created by Austrian-Vietnamese chef Stefanie La — pickled vegetables, beef tartare — ensures hunger, not only thirst, is kept at bay. Whether you come with a reason to celebrate or just stop by spontaneously for an indulgent after work tipple — this is a place in which friendship flourishes fast.(Text: Anna Dorothea Ker / Photos: Mina Aichhorn)

SEE ARTWORKS UNFOLD LIVE AT THE UNDERGROUND POP-UP CANVAS BAR

SEE ARTWORKS UNFOLD LIVE AT THE UNDERGROUND POP-UP CANVAS BAR

The tunnels beneath Potsdamer Platz will serve as more than just a transit point this weekend (18.-21.10.2018), when a disused section of the U3 line will be turned into a space for creative experimentation. Selected artists will create works live in front of visitors’ eyes: taking part are Mary Lennox and her incredible floral creations, lettering extraordinaire Stefan Kunz and calligrapher Sigrid Artmann, illustrator and designer Olaf Hajek, paper artist duo Lacy Barry & Cris Wiegandt, aka Crizilla & Delassey, and painter Paul Schrader (who will also host a keynote workshop on 20.10. at 18h.) Having gleaned inspiration from experiencing the artists at work up close, you’re invited to turn your attention to the art of drinking at the “Cocktail Finishing” studio, where you can experiment with flavors and colors to create your own unique twist on the classic Bombay Sapphire gin and tonic at the “tonic wall”. You even have the chance to take the artworks they’ve witnessed being made home with them — each piece will be sold on the final day of the pop-up.
