DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE: CLICHÉ BASHING #4 WITH DANDY DIARY

DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE: CLICHÉ BASHING #4 WITH DANDY DIARY

The swoosh or the stripes? Let’s face it: From sneakers to supermarkets, we’re all hype beasts in one way or another. The power brands wield over modern life will be the hot topic at cultural debate event Cliché Bashing #4, on tonight (17.5.2018) at Drive. Volkswagen Group Forum. Amongst the panel members this round will be David Roth and Carl Jakob Haupt of the fashion blog Dandy Diary and Britta Heidemann, Olympic champion in fencing. Moderated by Sissy Metzschke and Volker Wieprecht, industry insiders and experts will be split between “hype beasts” and “no logo” to tease out questions of brand power in conversation with the audience. Register here and prepare for an entertaining and thought-provoking evening spent deconstructing the clichés surrounding the logos competing for our attention, our wallets and our loyalty. OLD FRIENDS, NEW SPACE: CELEBRATING SEVEN YEARS OF CEE CEE AT SMALL BAR

OLD FRIENDS, NEW SPACE: CELEBRATING SEVEN YEARS OF CEE CEE AT SMALL BAR

An inconspicuous door leads to a sultry subterranean space, waiting to transport you into another world with its warm lighting, dark wood and plush furnishings. Welcome to Small Bar, the latest concept (opened April 2018) from Mokoto Watanabe and Shaul Margulies, the duo behind Zenkichi and House of Small Wonder. “We wanted a place to hang out after work and decompress… like a house party in Brooklyn back in the day. The music is just loud enough, the atmosphere is just rowdy enough, and you meet genuinely nice people — all before bedtime,” explains Shaul. Retro funk and soul records, supplemented by the occasional resident DJ set, add to the intimate mood. Drinks are kept classic, infused with a Japanese twist — like the “Chu High” (Japanese shōchū, tonic, a hint of lavender) and daily sake specials from Zenkichi’s premium Junmai range, as well as a small selection of wine. On weekends, Small Bar will offer takeaway coffees, pastries and all-day brunch cocktails. And on 17.5.2018, you’re invited to join Cee Cee as we take over Small Bar to celebrate our anniversary. It’s not about free drinks this time (the bar is cash only, on that note), but rather raising a toast to seven years of creativity and community. Save the date and come early — the space lives up to its name! (Text: Anna Dorothea Ker / Photos: Pamina Aichhorn)

IT’S ONLY NATURAL: RAW WINE TAKES OVER MARKTHALLE NEUN

IT’S ONLY NATURAL: RAW WINE TAKES OVER MARKTHALLE NEUN

Berlin’s natural wine boom is showing no signs of abating, given the spate of recent openings dedicated to organic, biodynamic and low-intervention wine: In Neukölln alone, MotifNaturales and Ladidadi have recently followed in the footsteps of benchmark-setting Jaja. This week (9-16.5.2018), the viticulture movement is being celebrated across Germany under the banner of Raw Wine Week, culminating in Berlin’s Raw Wine fair on 13-14.5.2018 at Markthalle Neun. Established by Master of Wine Isabelle Legeron and now in its 14th iteration internationally, Raw Wine is a coming together of producers, sommeliers, sellers and drinkers in celebration of the craft. It’s by no means just an industry event, however — accessibility, education and, of course, enjoyment is the point here. Take the opportunity to scrub up on the history and practices behind natural winemaking, improve your tasting note vocab, and discover favourite new varietals, all whilst sampling a glass or two. MAHLER 9: A RENEWED TRIBUTE TO A MASTER’S LAST SYMPHONY

MAHLER 9: A RENEWED TRIBUTE TO A MASTER’S LAST SYMPHONY

How about an epic start to next week? A Monday night spent immersed in rousing philharmonic melodies — listening to one of the greatest symphonies of all time, to be precise — sets a profound tone for days to come. Life, death, and the existential anguish invoked by the gap between them — all this is expressed in Mahler’s 9th Symphony. On 7.5.2018, your chance to come under its spell presents itself at the Berlin Philharmonie, where the Berlin University of the Arts(UdK Berlin) Symphony Orchestra will perform the masterpiece under the direction of Steven Sloane, following Dieter Schnebel’s “Mahler Moment from Re-Visions II”. The German composer will be in conversation with musicologist Prof. Dr. Ariane Jeßulat prior to the concert in the Philharmonie’s Hermann Wolff Hall, sharing his take on this epic work that marked the dawn of a new era in orchestral music. Pick up tickets here for an extraordinary Monday night — which can be the first of many, by the way, given that the night is a prelude to “crescendo”, the UdK Berlin’s festival of music, coming up from 25.5.-9.6.2018. See how you can start future weeks off on the right note here. (Text: Anna Dorothea Ker / Photos; clockwise: UdK Berlin (Timo Brüsewitz), Marcus Witte)

HANDS-ON DIGITAL CONTENT AT RE:PUBLICA 2018 AND NETZFEST

HANDS-ON DIGITAL CONTENT AT RE:PUBLICA 2018 AND NETZFEST

In this day and age, freely accessible digital content has become indispensable and a matter of course — just take a look at how you are reading these very words. Yet behind the vast mirror of the internet and our practical apps, there exists a hidden infrastructure and data collection; the use of which has been in constant development and continues to be the subject of formative debates. For its twelfth year, the conference Re:publica wants to convey this message with its tagline “Pop”, until 5.5.2018. Not only campaigners active in this scene but also well-known faces from the media and politics will be represented again this year. The first day of the conference began with an impressive participant; the activist Chelsea Manning emphasized the necessity of an informed use of digital data and the responsibility of developers. She also appealed to our openness, even outside our own (data-)bubble. Speaking of being active: This year you don’t need a ticket to participate yourself. On Saturday, the first public Netzfest will take place in Park am Gleisdreieck. Besides offering concerts and street food, the festival will also have workshops and lectures that will showcase hands-on digitality and technology. The neighboring Museum of Technology, a partner of the festival, will also open its doors from 10-18h. And in the spirit of free access to content and knowledge, you will be able to watch the panels and lectures of Re:publica on their YouTube channel. (Text & Photos: Jennifer Prietzel)
