It must have been 2011, I had a GMX email, my 36-square-meter shared room in the Stadtring cost 280 euros, and I was studying philosophy. While immersed in unfamiliar foreign words, ancient state concepts and medical ethics, I stumbled upon my first digital TED Talk searching for comprehensible secondary material — and was captivated. People spoke in approachable language with elegant rhetoric about contemporary topics with a sound scientific basis. What a tantalizing intellectual snack compared with my first (rather dry) university experience. What a completely unknown format at the time. Ted Talk has become a global sensation over the last ten years and rightly so. Now, the first live TEDxMitte event is finally taking place in Berlin. “Move Closer” is the name of the event, which next Saturday (19.10.2024) invites you to overcome barriers to thought, build community and establish networks — topics that could not be more topical and important.
Top-class speakers await you at the BeachMitte location: Tara Louise-Wittwer, German author and columnist, talks about gender roles and equal society, Dietmar Arnold from “Berliner Unterwelten” explores whether confronting the past can unite us, and Magdalena Skorupska, Head of Marketing at 42 Berlin, outlines an educational idea based entirely on the motto “Who we become should not be determined by luck or circumstance”.
