GOOD CAUSE MEETS GOOD TASTE: STUDIO SCHMAUS X SCHNEEEULE INVITE YOU TO A BEER DINNER

GOOD CAUSE MEETS GOOD TASTE: STUDIO SCHMAUS X SCHNEEEULE INVITE YOU TO A BEER DINNER

In Vienna, there’s an excellent restaurant called Mraz & Sohn — if you happen to be traveling there any time soon. Amelie and Alan met there and then moved to Berlin in the summer of 2023 — luckily for us Berliners. Here, they founded their artistic-culinary duo Studio Schmaus and offer conceptual catering, events and private dining experiences, all with regional products from small, fine producers that they know personally. Sounds fantastic? It is. We were able to find out for ourselves at our first Berlin Bites Dinner, where Amelie and Alan created a course menu for our guests. If you don’t have an occasion to book catering but you’re already working up an appetite reading this, we recommend the beer dinner they’ve organized with Schneeeule. The small Berliner Weisse brewery still brews with the yeasts of the last traditional Berliner Weisse manufactory yeasts. This small business has come under a bit of pressure in recent years. To prevent closure, there is a crowdfunding campaign and the aforementioned beer dinner: food and a toast for a good cause. All proceeds go to the small brewery and its brewer Ulrike. Amelie and Alan cook with verve and vegetarian ingredients. And if you can’t get tickets, don’t feel you’ve missed out, the pair are opening their own studio space in Kreuzberg in July 2024. A space for events, collaborations and experiments — so many more dinners will follow.

FUNKY BAGS AND LAMBRUSCO SPRITZ — WEEKEND POP-UP HIGHLIGHTS

FUNKY BAGS AND LAMBRUSCO SPRITZ — WEEKEND POP-UP HIGHLIGHTS

While May is behaving like April, we patiently await summer in Berlin. But still, the days are longer, the nights are warmer and the city is blossoming. Whether it’s dark clouds or hot temperatures, this weekend is perfect for a pop-up marathon. You can start on the terrace at The Rad with a two-day pop-up by Gather Berlin (01.-02.06.2024). Stop by for hearty Southern cuisine prepared by Californian chef Magdalena. Mac-and-cheese, fish fry and natural wines await (veggie options are also available). Next up is the Wedding Wool Weekend, in the courtyard at Wollen Berlin. This is where knitting enthusiasts, crochet pros and creatives come together to immerse themselves in the world of yarn, knitting accessories and handmade creations for two days. Gather inspiration for your creations or purchase accessories from Berlin wool experts. Helka Ceramics in Kreuzberg is also all about handicrafts. You’ll discover a colorful mix here: from handmade jewelry by Antonina Studio to funky bags by Maren Lilian, and, of course, ceramics. Their neighbor 8greenbottles will provide refreshments with a selection of natural wines.

True to the motto: come for the stroll and stay for the drink, Project Under Maintenance has an exciting pop-up at Gemini Berlin. In addition to clothing and jewelry, there will be embroidered photographs. An absolute must, don’t miss the sample sale and dance performance. To round off the weekend, celebrate the new issue of Apartamento Magazine at the one-day pop-up “Pizzamento“. Two food favorites will unite under the roof of Remi on Sunday (02.06.): Sofi Bakery and Lode & Stijn. Grab a slice of pizza, enjoy homemade gelato, and cool off with a Lambrusco Spritz. This is what summer in Berlin should be — full of discoveries and delicacies.

COFFEE, CAKE AND COMMUNITY SPIRIT — LANGE TAFELN NEIGHBOURHOOD EVENT BRINGS SUMMER-IN-THE-CITY VIBES TO NEUKÖLLN

COFFEE, CAKE AND COMMUNITY SPIRIT — LANGE TAFELN NEIGHBOURHOOD EVENT BRINGS SUMMER-IN-THE-CITY VIBES TO NEUKÖLLN

We Neuköllners are a frantic bunch: all immersed in our own worlds, busy hunting for three euro Döner and trying to negotiate Hermannplatz without stopping, looking up or interacting with the world in any way, shape or form. All this leaves precious few opportunities to start a conversation with our neighbors. That’s got to change, says the local authority, and to do it they’ve come up with the Lange Tafeln, a one-day community event that takes place tomorrow (31.05.2024) all over the district. Working with local organizations, Bezirksamt Neukölln is setting up tables at 19 outdoor locations from Gropiusstadt to Richardplatz where you can have coffee and cake, meet folks from your block and get involved in fun activities. You can go to a magic show in Buckow, do some upcycling by the Kindl brewery and plant some herbs at Herrfurthplatz. Whichever location you head to, you’ll have the chance to chat to your neighbors (or non-neighbors – you don’t have to live in Neukölln to join in) and enjoy a brew. If you’d rather get busy than shoot the breeze, you are advised to head over to Tempelhofer Feld, where there’ll be tightrope walking (kids included) and a bike repair workshop. Expect friendly chat, civic participation and summer-in-the-city vibes. Neukölln, we knew you had it in you…

BEAUTIFUL OBJECTS & LOVELY PEOPLE: SUNDAYS IN THE COURTYARD AT ANDREAS MURKUDIS’ CHARITY MARKET

BEAUTIFUL OBJECTS & LOVELY PEOPLE: SUNDAYS IN THE COURTYARD AT ANDREAS MURKUDIS’ CHARITY MARKET

What could be better than spending a May Sunday afternoon with warm people in the open air? With snacks, a chilled drink and beautiful objects? If this plan appeals to you, the Andreas Murkudis team is looking forward to seeing you. It’s best to bring all your friends because more is more at the third edition of the Sunday Charity Market. The last edition raised almost 100,000 euros for a good cause, and, hopefully, it will be even more this time. The proceeds from the market go to two NGOs committed to sea rescue — many people die each year trying to escape war and poverty by sea. SOS Humanity has already rescued more than 35,000 people from distress at sea in the central Mediterranean with its rescue ship Humanity 1. And #LeaveNoOneBehind coordinates civilian sea rescues with various partners.

If you’re looking for inspiration, there will be books and art. But also practical and beautiful things like fashion, furniture and cosmetics. We have our eye on the beautiful water glasses from Vogel Studio — ideal for summer drinks on the balcony. The distinctive black chair by Klemens Grund for Tecta is also on the wish list, adding a touch of chicness to any room. And who would say no to a Dries van Noten wedge? There will be many wonderful pieces because if there’s one Berliner who has been demonstrating excellent taste for years, it’s Andreas Murkudis and his team. I have every confidence in the overall concept of this event. See you Sunday in the beautiful courtyard on Potsdamer, right?

CHINKING ICE CUBES, CARAMEL GLITTER AND CUBAN NIGHTS — EMINENTE RUM BRINGS THE CARIBBEAN TO BERLIN

CHINKING ICE CUBES, CARAMEL GLITTER AND CUBAN NIGHTS — EMINENTE RUM BRINGS THE CARIBBEAN TO BERLIN

One of the best things about Berlin is you don’t have to travel when you have wanderlust — other countries make a pitstop here regularly. Last week it was Austria, and today? Today we’re going to Cuba. Or, to be specific, to Mitte, Kreuzberg and Charlottenburg. Over the summer, the city will transform into Barrio Cubanos (23.05.-16.06.2024) — Cuban neighborhoods. Whether on Schönhauser Allee in the vibrant Kink Bar & Restaurant, the legendary Schönberger Green Door Bar, the elegant Kreuzberg Galander, or the Moet & Chandon Lounge in KaDeWe, over 100 bars and restaurants invite you to enjoy Cuban cuisine. The Caribbean lifestyle is accompanied by authentic cuisine and sophisticated drinks based on the timelessly complex Eminente rum. The amber-colored Eminente Reserva was created by shooting star César Marti, the youngest Cuban Maestro Ronero (rum master). This strong and full-bodied rum, inspired by the sugar cane distillates of Cuba, the eaux de vie of the 19th century, with all their tradition and versatile interplay of flavors, forms the perfect basis for all kinds of summer drinks — and the longed-for change from the Spritz of recent years. A hot, shimmering copper summer awaits all those who dare to join in the fun.
