THE BERLIN TRAVEL FESTIVAL: FOR PEOPLE ON THE MOVE AND WANT TO STAY PRESENT

THE BERLIN TRAVEL FESTIVAL: FOR PEOPLE ON THE MOVE AND WANT TO STAY PRESENT

Constantly Instagram scrolling? How about something much better: although this event offers at least as much inspiration, it has much more depth than endless swiping, and not just physically. The Berlin Travel Festival (01.-03.12.2023), founded by Bernd Neff, has set itself the task of showing you what’s possible when it comes to travel. You can discover destinations from the Barnin countryside to the North York National Park in England and Costa Rica. But of course it’s not just about getting to know places, it’s also about bringing people together. It’s for people who create and curate experiences and those who are looking for rest, relaxation and adventure. But you can also simply find the perfect travel backpack, more information about your dream tiny house, glamping inspo, eco-resorts and tips for your workation. Need another buzzword to motivate your travel buddies, climbing friends and hiking groups for a trip to the Berlin Travel Festival at the Messe Berlin?

Group travel is known to be particularly beautiful – here it comes: the photo area! This year, for the first time, there will be an area dedicated to photography with exhibitors such as Leica, Sony and Sigma. Head over to test products and ask questions, as there’s specialist knowledge at your fingertips. This way, there’s nothing standing between you and the perfect travel content. But hang on, it’s 2023, and by now we already all know that Insta-sensations can sometimes flatten out nature and people. So here’s a hint: the Berlin Travel Festival wants to make travel more mindful and has created a value compass that makes it clear: travel should be possible for everyone, but should also be sustainable. Environmentally friendly practices should be promoted and supported so that a positive change can take place in the travel industry – for an enriching travel experience for everyone.

BERLIN’S ANSWER TO THE THROWAWAY SOCIETY: THE ZERO WASTE FUTURE FESTIVAL BEGINS

BERLIN’S ANSWER TO THE THROWAWAY SOCIETY: THE ZERO WASTE FUTURE FESTIVAL BEGINS

Are olive oil canisters the future, and can you save the world with beer? Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR) has big plans! Their vision is to make Berlin the zero waste capital. At the Zero Waste Future Festival 2023 (ZWFF for short) at NochMall, the BSR’s second-hand department store in Reinickendorf, this vision will become reality (14.-17.11.2023). Find out how you can make a big difference with small steps – whether it’s at the breakfast table or in your closet. The key word here is “zero waste”, a term that describes using products and raw materials for as long as possible and keeping them in circulation before they are disposed of. The ZWFF offers a three-day program, with each day dedicated to a different theme: “Food & Drink”, “Recycle” or “Repair” are the three guiding themes. Free workshops and hands-on information stands will show you how you can make your everyday life more waste-free. Pedal on the Smoothie Bike and earn yourself a fruity refreshment or learn how to creatively upgrade and ferment stale bread. The exciting conclusion to the Zero Waste Future Festival will take place on Friday (17.11., when visions for a waste-free future will be presented and you’ll be invited to try out some of these new ideas. The numerous interactive activities will start at 15h, including a clothing swap party in cooperation with youngcaritas and Lena from Gurlscrime, theater and live music. And of course, BSR will also be present with information on waste disposal, separating recyclables and reusable solutions.

AN ICON TURNS 60: KINO INTERNATIONAL CELEBRATES A MILESTONE BIRTHDAY

AN ICON TURNS 60: KINO INTERNATIONAL CELEBRATES A MILESTONE BIRTHDAY

I know a cinema where everything is just right: the location, the architecture, the hand-painted posters on the façade, the heavy red velvet curtains, the bar in the lobby and, of course, the outstanding film program. I have spent countless hours in the wonderful cinema seats here. And, depending on the movie and how I’m feeling afterwards, for a very long time at the lobby bar… We’re talking about the legendary Kino International. Now this icon is celebrating its 60th birthday – with an extensive program, but more on that below! First, let’s go back in time: it’s November 15, 1963 and the Wall has been dividing Berlin into East and West for two years. Kino International opens its doors as the first premiere cinema in the former GDR. With its design, choice of materials and proportions, the building is one of the most successful new cinemas of the post-war period. The latest DEFA films premiered here, including Konrad Wolf’s “Solo Sunny”. It was designed by architects Josef Kaiser and Heinz Aust as a three-storey reinforced concrete skeleton structure clad in light-colored sandstone. Characteristic of the movie theater is the cinema hall projecting above the first floor with a spacious foyer – column-free and nine meters above the first floor with a large open glass surface facing Karl-Marx-Allee.

The stately building was designed for multifunctional use. The foyer hosted balls, rock concerts, political rallies – even hairdressing competitions. What is less well known is that even before the fall of the Wall, the Kino International was a window to the world and showed selected Western productions such as “Cabaret” and “Beyond Africa”. The film “Dirty Dancing” was shown six times a day in 1987 and was sold out for weeks. The premiere of “Coming Out”, the first queer film in the former GDR, took place on November 9, 1989. It was a doubly moving event for the guests, as it turned out afterwards. When the Curtain came down, so did the Wall between East and West. In 1990, the cinema was added to the city of Berlin’s list of monuments and this may have been its salvation. The cinema has been part of the Yorck-Kinogruppe since 1992 and is still a place of openness and exchange today. And so this birthday is being celebrated: a lavish program accompanies the celebrations until the film theater closes in spring 2024 – for a brief general refurbishment from the basement to the roof in line with the conservation requirements. My highlight is the open day (19.11.) with a screening of my favorite DEFA classics: “Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella”, “The Legend of Paul and Paula” and “Trail of Stones”. Architectural backstage tours (19.11.) provide a look behind the scenes. Every Sunday – for the next three months – a film will be shown that deals primarily with the GDR past: Films such as the Stasi drama “The Lives of Others” or the tragicomedy “Good Bye, Lenin!” are among the most successful films in Germany’s post-reunification history. A photo exhibition on the history of the building accompanies the celebrations. All that remains is to say: Happy Birthday, Kino International!

AUSTRIA IN MITTE — SATISFY YOUR WANDERLUST AT FEEL AUSTRIA ON AUGUSTSTRASSE

AUSTRIA IN MITTE — SATISFY YOUR WANDERLUST AT FEEL AUSTRIA ON AUGUSTSTRASSE

Summer’s over and winter’s not yet arrived, so it’s time to start daydreaming. For anyone who has wanderlust but is stuck in cold Berlin, maybe a day trip to Austria is worth it – because it’s right on Auguststrasse, at least for a few days (25–28.10.2023). The Alpine country beckons visitors to the gallery-like pop-up “Feel Austria” with all the hospitality, tempting specialties and soul-soothing warmth for which we know and love the nation. There’s not only lots of exquisite products to discover, but also cooking demonstrations (who’s heard of Steirisches Wurzelfleisch?), wine, beer and cheese tastings, as well as Gmundner ceramic painting classes all on the program. Places are limited, so it’s best to sign up for one of the workshops right away. Mountain tradition and cozy feelings can also be taken home later to accompany you through the long-lasting Berlin autumn. Workshops and events are free of charge. It’s just like a real vacation to tide you over. And who knows: maybe your next trip will even take you to the mountains?

AT SILENT GREEN: A WEEKEND OF FEMALE EMPOWERMENT

AT SILENT GREEN: A WEEKEND OF FEMALE EMPOWERMENT

After launching in 2019, Female to Empower is back this weekend at Silent Green for its third edition, diving deep into musical improvisation and exploring its influence on artistic and social emancipation over the last five decades. From free jazz and experimental improvised music to DIY punk culture and electronic beats, the festival looks at how improvisation has played a pivotal role in shaping the narrative of female musicians in a male-dominated industry. Among the featured artists are post-punk icons Gina Birch and Lesley Woods, renowned improvising musicians Farida Amador and Violeta García, transdisciplinary sound artists Elsa M’bala aka AMET and Ale Hop, as well as the avant-garde electronic trio Contagious. To paint as comprehensive a picture as possible, Female to Empower brings together musicians, all-female bands, and network activists from different generations and diverse musical milieus. Panels and talks, live concerts, and a documentary film program delve deep into the biographies and working worlds of the musicians involved. Don’t worry about snacks and drinks; Mars is the restaurant bar of Silent Green, which serves delicious seasonal dishes and cocktails and is open all evening. On Sunday they also offer their weekly Moules Frites night. You can still find tickets for both days, but don’t wait too long!
