EXPLORE BERLIN WITH A NEW (GREEN) PERSPECTIVE — THE ALLBIRDS X CEE CEE NEIGHBORHOOD MAP

Now that Berlin is back open for business, it’s the perfect time to (re)discover all the places we’ve been missing – and hopefully some new ones too. To celebrate the latest edition of our map series we have teamed up with sustainable footwear and clothing brand Allbirds for a blooming surprise this weekend (18–19.06.2021). Keep an eye out for the Allbirds cargo bikes passing through Prenzlauer Berg, Mitte and Kreuzberg and bag yourself a free eucalyptus bouquet from local florist Marsano as well as a freshly-printed copy of the Allbirds x Cee Cee Neighborhood Map. It features a brand new selection of handpicked spots – this time from all across Berlin – that do better things in a better way, including tried-and-tested independent cafes, neighborhood shops, natural wine boutiques, bakeries and more. Don’t miss the five walking tours taking you on day trips around some of the city’s best spots. Pick a route that fits your vibe – a gallery-filled cultural walk maybe? Or perhaps a sustainable shopping spree? – grab your favorite person and some comfy shoes and get exploring. STREET FOOD FRIDAYS — BITE CLUB RETURNS TO GLEISDREIECK PARK

Start saving your appetite: Bite Club is back! After a Covid-induced break, the fabled food event is returning tomorrow (18.06.2021) with eight stalls of round-the-world cuisine from some of Berlin gastro’s leading lights. The rendezvous point for the Friday feast is the B-Part co-working space which overlooks the Kreuzberg corner of Gleisdreieck park, meaning you are (almost) guaranteed a good sunset. The lip-licking lineup includes Caribbean-hot jerk chicken from Vybz, fully-packed pittas from The Shawarma Mamma and fresh and fiery bibimbap from Son Kitchen. Also serving up the spice is another mother – Mama Shabz – whose crispy pakoras and sharp Koftas have made us keen fans of Pakistani cuisine. There’s liquid indulgence too, with classy cocktails from B-Part’s resident cafe Jules and cool beers courtesy of Brlo. Should you still have space after that, you can finish up with one of Woop Woop’s creamy-fresh nitro gas ice creams. More vendors are being added in the coming weeks, including Ma-Makan with their Malay dishes and matcha shaved ice from Tenzan Lab. Time to block your calendar: this summer’s Friday hangout is sorted.

KANSHASAI — THE JAPANESE FESTIVAL OF APPRECIATION WITH GIVEAWAYS AND INSPIRATION FROM UNIQLO

When the sun starts to shine more and all the flowers are opening, I start to appreciate things that little bit more. The same goes for Uniqlo, who are spreading a little love this month with a program of specially-curated activities and giveaways. The Japanese apparel brand known for minimalist, clean-cut styles calls it Kanshasai. This Japanese word is broken down to mean Kansha – appreciation – and Sai, which means festival. Thus: the Appreciation Festival. Over two weeks (10.06–23.06.2021) the retailer has lined up dozens of giveaways including eco-friendly tote bags (get yours today, 10.06.), bags specially illustrated by artist Laura Breiling (17.06), vouchers for online floral shop Bloomon plus your chance to win a bike. The celebrations continue with in-store artworks from Berlin creatives including artist Ju Schnee, who has created a sculpture inspired by AIRism, the innovative keep-cool material from Uniqlo. The sculpture stands tall at the center of the Tauentzienstrasse store, mimicking the free flowing and lightweight form of the material. Blending Berlin art with Tokyo fabric technology, the installation is a worthwhile stop on your next shopping trip for summer basics (speaking of which: check out Uniqlo’s range of linen shirts, shorts and dresses while you are there). Pop by one of the six Berlin stores today or next Saturday (19.06.) where the team is serving up vouchers for free gyoza from Takumi-Ramen. We’ll be first in line!

FORECAST FESTIVALS — TWO WEEKENDS OF BOUNDARY-PUSHING COLLABS WITH PERFORMANCES, FILMS AND DISCUSSIONS

Electronic music that incorporates traditional Finnish instruments. A film series that uses food to explore West African colonialism. And a graphic novel about a Black American GI in World War II. What could these three creative works possibly have in common? The answer is that they all feature in this year’s Forecast Festivals (01.–02.04. & 09.–10.04.2021). Over two weekends, 12 international artists, musicians and writers present innovative performances, artworks and talks streamed live from the former pumping station at Friedrichshain’s radialsystem. What’s special about the event is that each of the creatives has spent nine months working with a mentor to make their idea happen. Billed as “Mentorships for Audacious Minds”, Forecast was launched in 2014 with the aim of encouraging knowledge sharing in the arts.

The multidisciplinary program breaks down conventional genre boundaries and encourages diverse, political forms of creative inquiry. You see this in the projects themselves, such as the multimedia documentary work “Change Atlas” from Miami artist and researcher Sue Montoya who, under her mentor, artist Paolo Cirio, investigated the impact of rising sea levels on Florida communities and ecosystems. Montoya and 11 other creatives will be presenting their works over four nights that include all the performances from 2020’s postponed festival, meaning you can check out two years’ worth of creative collabs (full lineup here). And, who knows, if the work inspires you enough it could soon be you on stage presenting your own boundary-pushing project: Forecast has an annual Open Call for new projects every January.

Also keeping things bitesize is Jan Sadowsky, the founder of holiday home startup Green Tiny Houses who joins the panel “Wie viel ist wenig?” to discuss how tiny living concepts are making travel slower and more sustainable. Dare to dream a bit bigger? Travel blogger Maggie Haselwanter will gladly get you geared up for a global adventure with stories from her 2020 moped voyage from Switzerland to New Zealand. She joins the Travel Festival team to discuss being a woman who travels and how Corona cut her trip short. Finally, join bestselling author Stephan Orth for fascinating tales on the thrills and spills of couchsurfing through Saudi Arabia.
