FLANEUR FESTIVAL: THE 20.5-HOUR LAUNCH PARTY BRINGING TAIPEI TO HKW

We first told Cee Cee readers about Berlin-based Flaneur Magazine when it launched in 2013, and it’s been among our favorite reads ever since. Flaneur takes an innovative approach, featuring one street per issue and telling its stories through the people and places there. For the eighth edition, the magazine goes to Taiwan’s capital, Taipei, and the historical area around Kangding/Wanda Road to give readers a glimpse of this microcosm of Taiwanese life. The edition launch is being celebrated with the very first Flaneur Festival, which will bring these visions of Taipei to Berlin for an all-night party. The aim is to create a spatial story by transforming Haus der Kulturen der Welt with immersive events and performances, such as a reading room collaboration between two bookshops, Berlin’s Do You Read Me?! and Taipei’s Pon Ding, featuring hard-to-find authors. A Taiwanese teahouse and bistro pop-up from Cozymazu, calligraphy classes, and a classic tea ceremony complete this journey through the country’s lively culture and history. (Text: Emily Miotke / Photos: Flaneur Magazine, Yannes Kiefer)

JUNGLE FEVER WITH BERGAMOTTE: PLANT HUNTING AT THE XXL POP-UP SHOP

In our opinion you can never have enough plants. Good job that online plant shop Bergamotte is back with another pop-up edition from 04.–07.9.2019, this time with an XXL sale at Glashaus Berlin. No matter which type of plant you’re looking for – whether hanging, exotic, prickly, colorful or evergreen – they have it all. And there’s more: in addition to the over 4,000 plants, there will also be refreshments from Monkey 47 gin and Selo, culinary delights, and botanical workshops. You can look forward to macramé lessons, do-it-yourself herbal tinctures, pottery courses and, for those starting out on their botanical journey, a “how to make a plant love you” workshop. This event is not just for plant connoisseurs and professionals whose homes are already like a greenhouse, but for beginners too.Come by, get some plant advice, let off steam in one of the workshops and find a new plant for your home. HERTZBERG GOLF — THE MINIGOLF COURSE THAT HAS NOSTALGIA DOWN TO A TEE

The 18 holes at Neukölln’s Hertzberg Golf offer a multitude of challenges. Hitting the ball through the mad assortment of tunnels and bumps and into the hole is no mean feat, and after six attempts it’s all over. But as you work your way round this delightfully nostalgic minigolf course, club in one hand and a glass of Radler in the other, you soon realise it’s not the winning but the being there that counts. With a history going back to 1960, the course has been painstakingly renovated since 2014 by current owner Frank Terhorst, keeping many original features like the space-age mushroom lamps. Hertzberg’s charm and pro-picnic policy also makes it a legendary venue for birthday parties and special events – like Megagolf from youth literature label Kabeljau & Dorsch. Tonight’s edition(29.08.2019) of the informal literary gathering hosts readings by Giorgi Jamburia, Leif Randt, Ambika Thompson and music from J. THE MAGIC OF MAKING BREAD — ROE & CO.LLECTIVE MEETS CEE CEE LESSONS AT BROT IST GOLD

Breadmaking is truly magical. You mix flour and water and end up with a delicious staple food. It’s also a fine art: kneading, rising, proving and finally baking to perfection. As big bread fans ourselves, we’re very excited to master these skills for the next edition of Roe & Co.llective meets Cee Cee Lessons. On 27.08.2019, our friends at Brot ist Gold bakery will be showing us how to make a true sourdough before we work together to create our very own loaves. We’ll be in very good hands: since opening their shop in March 2019, Kolja Orzeszko und Athanassios Petalotis have focused all their efforts on making the best possible bread from the fewest possible ingredients, all sourced from within a 100km radius. Flour, water and salt alone go into their loaves, which are handmade and left to rise naturally. It’s baking in its highest form. The event will be a chance for participants to come together and learn from these artisans how to work as a team to make something truly extraordinary. METROPOLIS AT BABYLON: CLASSIC SILENT CINEMA — RECOMMENDED BY CARO EICHSTAEDT

Ever since the Babylon cinema caught my eye, I’ve wanted to experience the glamour and mystery of 1920s Berlin. Opened in 1929, the Babylon brings you instantly back to a golden age of film. This unassuming building, just across from the Volksbühne theatre, comes from a time where movies had no soundtrack and were accompanied by a live orchestra. Now, in 2019, you can relive the old days. This Saturday (24.08.2019) Babylon is presenting a special screening of Fritz Lang’s seminal 1927 science-fiction film, Metropolis. As part of its 90th anniversary celebrations, the cinema has brought together its own in-house ensemble – the Babylon Orchestra Berlin – giving the film’s futuristic dystopia the powerful accompaniment that Lang intended. I couldn’t help but get goosebumps as the orchestra played their climax. If you miss out on this Saturday’s screening, check out one of Babylon’s regular free screenings with organ music – they have the last remaining cinema organ in Germany.
