BEYOND VISUAL RANGE: GET UP CLOSE AND DINE WITH MISSILES

BEYOND VISUAL RANGE: GET UP CLOSE AND DINE WITH MISSILES

Power symbols are at the center of Sebastian Schmidt’s new exhibition, “Beyond Visual Range”, currently on at KravtGallery. Inherently violent yet somehow serene, the artist’s large-format 3D renderings of hyperrealistic missiles arrest the viewer, rendering her defenseless in the face of the long-distance weapon technology that tends to be as abstracted by the media as its victims are anonymized. For visitors to Kravt, Schmidt’s series goes towards usurping that reality. An especially potent confrontation with the constructed realities of warfare will present itself on 27.9. & 29.9.2018, when Purgal & Kelm will host a five-course edition of their supper club in the gallery. A teaser of the menu: Rabbit with olive, rosemary, peach and wild herbs, and Zander fillet with blueberry, blood sausage, pumpkin and celery. Though the artistic subject matter may be hard to swallow, the food you’ll be served is anything but. (Text: Anna Dorothea Ker / Photos: c/o Kravt Gallery)

CLICHÉ BASHING #5: TAKE IT EASY GIRL VS. MULTITASKING WOMAN

CLICHÉ BASHING #5: TAKE IT EASY GIRL VS. MULTITASKING WOMAN

When was the last time you flexed your argumentation skills in an intellectual debate? If it’s been a while since you put your opinions to the test, head down to Drive. Volkswagen Group Forum next Thursday night (20.9.2018) for round #5 of Cliché Bashing. This debate series sees moderators Sissy Metzschke and Volker Wieprecht take on some of society’s thorniest issues, together with experts and the audience. The topic this round is “I’m (Im)perfect” — Take It Easy Girl vs. Multitasking Woman”. That’s to say, the pressure experienced by women to multitask their way to perfection in all areas of life — from building a career to raising a family and being the perfect partner. Where does this come from? Who’s perpetuating it? And how can we alleviate this oppressive double standard? These are amongst the questions that will be picked apart by a panel including mixed martial arts fighter Julia Dorny, actor and moderator Alina Merkau and founder of Yogibar, Helen Meyer. Naturally, the event welcomes all genders — round up your favorite conversationalists and register here for what promises to be a thought-provoking evening. DISAPPEAR INTO A DYSTOPIAN JUNGLE SOUNDSCAPE AT BERGHAIN

DISAPPEAR INTO A DYSTOPIAN JUNGLE SOUNDSCAPE AT BERGHAIN

Disappear into a dystopian journey from dusk to dawn (over the course of 76 minutes) at Berghain on 26.9.2018, guided by the audio-visual prowess of Julian Charrière and Ed Davenport (aka Inland). The visual and sound artists respectively are collaborating to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the eruption of Indonesia’s Tambora volcano in 1815 — the enormous effects of which triggered extreme weather conditions, famines and political turmoil — plunging the northern hemisphere into what was known as “the year without summer.” Ever relevant in today’s climate of political and environmental chaos, a jungle landscape of palm oil plantations conceived by Charrière will be set to a haunting electronic soundtrack by Inland — whose accompanying album release by Ostgut Ton’s A-Ton label occurs that day, as does the opening of Charrière’s exhibition “As We Used to Float” at Berlinische Galerie. Tickets are fast selling out — snap yours up here. (Text: Anna Dorothea Ker / Film Stills: Julian Charrière c/o VG Bild-Kunst / Portrait: Johannes Förster)
