THE CARHARTT WIP ARCHIVES: RELEASE-PARTY & EXHIBITION

THE CARHARTT WIP ARCHIVES: RELEASE-PARTY & EXHIBITION

If you grew up in the 90s, it’s almost certain you had one thing: a Carhartt WIP jacket. Since then the robust hooded garment has risen to cult-status. It’s a long time ago — and the brand’s roots go back even further. Reason enough to commemorate with a retrospective look into its archive: Next Thursday (03.11.2016) Carhartt WIP celebrates the launch of its book, delving into the brand’s last 30 years. But it’s not only about apparel — the brand is so much more than that: it stands for street culture, from music to art. To match the release party in Berlin, celebrate with a pretty great DJ line-up (see details below), including a live-stream from the NTS radio booth. An exhibition curated by French graphic design agency Ill Studio complements the concept. To attend the event, sign up online (until 01.11.2016), as entry is guaranteed only with registration to the Johann König gallery in St. Agnes. It’s going to be a jam-packed evening. LORENA SIMMEL RECOMMENDS: NEW THEATRE BY STILL DRAMA

LORENA SIMMEL RECOMMENDS: NEW THEATRE BY STILL DRAMA

This Saturday (22.10.2016), Still Drama launches its new book series of theater writings, with a launch party in Berlin. The books’ format vaguely recalls of the classic by Reclam; the content though, is unquestionably contemporary. The works “Schere Faust Papier” (Scissors, Fist, Paper) by Michel Decar and “Emma” by Martin Fritz (both authors are under the age of 35; both plays were written in the last year) make for profound and entertaining reads. Selected through an open call, the two works have been released as a double feature: The book has two covers, with the words of the two plays running into each other on paper. Behind the series is Marc Holzenbecher, publisher of Berlin- and Brooklyn-based Still Magazine, which combines new literature with artistic photography in high-end print editions. To celebrate the release of the first issue of Still Drama, the actors Esther Hilsemer, Gro Swantje Kohlhof, and Nicolas Lehni are presenting the writings alongside theater musician Sebastian Jurchen in two staged readings. Drinks and, of course, the book, fresh from the press, are also on the menu. If you happen to miss the event, Michel Decar’s play will premier this December at Thalia Theater in Hamburg. (Text: Lorena Simmel)

THE UNSPEAKABLE 5 COURSE MEAL: JUST DESSERTS

THE UNSPEAKABLE 5 COURSE MEAL: JUST DESSERTS

Desserts can truly make or break a meal. But more often than not, I regret having finished everything on my plate, unable to take another bite as I face the most scrumptious sweets. Who decided that desserts, aptly called Nachspeise (literally “after-meal”) in German, must come at the end? Moreover, why can’t the whole meal consist of only desserts? Is devouring multiple servings of sweet morsels in one evening such a sin? The Store Kitchen team and Mary Scherpe from Stil in Berlin were sharing the same thoughts — and together decided to launch their blissful multi-course desserts-only meal series called “Just Desserts”. The menu consists of an aperitif of peach juice, barley and rum, followed by plum consommé with burrata, thyme and hazelnuts, a slice of heavenly and light flourless chocolate cake, a digestive of candied anise, and finally, turmeric macarons with salted caramel (my absolute favorite!). Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this is for real. And you don’t need to feel guilty about it either. Get your limited tickets here. (Text: Rei Matsuoka / Photos: Becca Crawford)
