TALMO: CABLES THAT ADD COLOR TO YOUR CHARGING ROUTINE

TALMO: CABLES THAT ADD COLOR TO YOUR CHARGING ROUTINE

Your phone cable is purely functional right? Not so! With their smartphone cables, Talmo have injected some flair, color and practicality into your charging routine. The start up’s founders Antonia and Paul have used their design, tech and e-commerce backgrounds to develop this range of super eye-catching cables, in a range of fun, poppy colors and patterns that match any style. With a braided cloth rather than plastic coating, they have a sturdy, tactile feel and come in the kind of packaging that you’ll want to use over and over. And with a cable tie included, they’re designed to be tangle-free too. Plus, if you are planning for the cold days ahead, Talmo have branched out into touchscreen gloves, so you can keep swiping and scrolling even in the iciest of conditions. The cables are available for iPhone and Android and come in different lengths. Head to talmo.eu to discover how even the most everyday objects can be transformed by good, playful design. “WIE GEHT’S DIR, DEUTSCHLAND?” TAKING STOCK WITH CHRISTOPH AMEND

“WIE GEHT’S DIR, DEUTSCHLAND?” TAKING STOCK WITH CHRISTOPH AMEND

There is a tendency to think that politics and society will always get better — more economic growth, less war and more tolerance. But looking at the climate crisis, the rise of the populist right and clashes over immigration, this seems like a fanciful idea. Following his 2003 book “Morgen tanzt die Welt”, Christoph Amend, editor of Zeit Magazine, is back on the road meeting well-known German personalities and his friends to talk about how Germany is doing, and find out what has become of the country where he grew up, and what needs to change. At the centre of this new book – entitled “Wie Geht’s dir Deutschland?” (“How are you doing, Germany?”) – is the German people: the young, the old, Jewish people, migrants and refugees. In asking these people about their fears and worries, Amend unites different themes like ethnic identity, National Socialism, German reunification and other more everyday concerns. What results is a book that is both timely and valuable in how it presents important questions and topics. It’s this sort of debate and exchange of ideas that will bring the solutions we need. “Wie gehts dir, Deutschland?” by Christoph Amend, published in German by Rowohlt Verlag, 2019. Hardback, 224 pages.

NIYOK — THE TOOTHPASTE FOR GUILT-FREE BRUSHING

NIYOK — THE TOOTHPASTE FOR GUILT-FREE BRUSHING

My bathroom battle is against not just plaque but also plastic. The latter is more of a problem, given the heaps of plastic packaging lining the shelves of the chemist. The result: a hurt environment and a hurt conscience. Hope for change comes by the name of Niyok– a vegan, certified-as-natural toothpaste in a sustainable chalk-based tube. This toothpaste is all about what it doesn’t contain: plasticizers, waxes, stabilizers and fluoride are all absent. For Niyok founders Carlo Hanuszkiewicz and John Peitschner, it’s crucial to know what our toiletries contain and why. Thus every ingredient (like capric triglyceride) is accompanied by an explanation (it gives the toothpaste consistency). The battle in my bathroom has now taken on a new dynamic: choosing between Niyok’s lemongrass and ginger, blood orange and basil, and classic peppermint. (Text: Nina Trippel / Photos: Johanna Rademacher-Flesland & Niyok)

SELO — UNROASTED COFFEE DRINKS FOR A COOL ENERGY BOOST

SELO — UNROASTED COFFEE DRINKS FOR A COOL ENERGY BOOST

It’s been exciting to see the growth in Berlin’s coffee scene in recent years, and like beer brewers, coffee roasters are coming up with an endless number of delicious varieties. Selo green coffee drinks are the one to watch. They are a sparkling, tangy and refreshing take on cold coffee and 100% organic and vegan. The new range of three drinks are produced from sun-dried unroasted green coffee beans mixed with lemon, agave, ginger, and gentian. The tangy yellow variety also adds turmeric and citrus, while the floral red version adds hibiscus and lavender. All three offer a unique thirst-quenching drink with no added sugar and as much caffeine as two espressos. And for those just wanting a clean boost, the Caffeine Water offers a pure energy shot. And, as if you need another reason to give them a try, they’re available in supermarkets all around the city — from Rewe to Edeka. Perfect the next time you need a cooling energy lift. ABOUT BERLIN APP: JOURNEY FROM YOUR DOORSTEP AND DISCOVER YOUR SURROUNDINGS ANEW

ABOUT BERLIN APP: JOURNEY FROM YOUR DOORSTEP AND DISCOVER YOUR SURROUNDINGS ANEW

You know the story: your friends are coming to Berlin and you immediately get visions of six-hour walking tours looking at sights in Mitte you know little about. But don’t fear: help is at hand with About Berlin. Produced by the Visit Berlin tourism board, this app offers over 200 location-based stories that let you dive into Berlin’s past, exploring everything from radical 19th century art movements to the green initiatives of the 2000s. Naturally, many stories cover the years of war and division, but even old tales of East versus West are given new life here. The app offers GPS walking tours, though the greatest joy is simply putting in your current location and exploring the history right around the corner. Opening it in my area of Neukölln, I was taken back to the 1930s and the monumental Karstadt department store that once stood at Hermannplatz. From Cee Cee’s Mitte studio, we learned about the original pioneering 90s club Tresor located nearby. The app offers a genuinely engaging experience for newcomers to Berlin – and it teaches us oldies a few new things too. (Text: Benji Haughton / Photos: Johanna Radermacher–Flesland & Çiya Rädler)

You can download the About Berlin app for iPhone and Android.
