A SLOW-BURN STORY OF FRIENDSHIP — CHRISTIAN PETZOLD’S “AFIRE” NOW STREAMING AT MUBI

A SLOW-BURN STORY OF FRIENDSHIP — CHRISTIAN PETZOLD’S “AFIRE” NOW STREAMING AT MUBI

It smells of dry pine forests, dusty sand and salty sea spray. Of cold lasagna and dark red wine, of warm wood and sticky tar, of exhaust fumes and paper. Christian Petzold’s new film Afire is so familiar and intimate that you feel immediately in the thick of it. In the midst of our incipient autumn gloom, these 103 minutes of summer melancholy captured on film hit that very sweet spot of longing, desire and nostalgia. Awarded the Silver Bear at the Berlinale, the film is now available exclusively on Mubi. It tells the story of two friends, Felix and Leon, who spend a month in a house by the Baltic Sea. We know the type: these are typical Berliners who come by car and, after a long detour, arrive at the holiday home feeling both excited and suspicious. There they unexpectedly meet Nadja, a seasonal worker doing her doctorate who also lives in the house and regularly and noisily sleeps there with the handsome lifeguard Devid.

In pastel images, a summer romance full of drama, wit and passion unfolds. Felix desires Devid, Leon desires Nadja, Nadja desires the poems of Heinrich Heine and maybe Leon too, but we won’t reveal that here yet. There is eating and working, writing, photographing and swimming, kissing and arguing. The young queer romance intensifies when Leon’s publisher shows up to discuss his new manuscript and the surrounding forest fires draw ever closer. Petzold’s brilliant character studies create an intimate portrait of five different young adults, full of dissecting emotion, clever wit, and subtle tension. Hans’ Fromm’s exceptionally detailed portraiture (cinematography) and Bettina Böhler’s unusual editing create a poetic visual language that supports the equally excellent acting performances of the lead actors. A cautious masterpiece made for long evenings with summer behind us and the next one still so far away.

KRAUT & BLUME — OUTDOOR FLOWERS AND WILD BOUQUETS FROM POTSDAM

KRAUT & BLUME — OUTDOOR FLOWERS AND WILD BOUQUETS FROM POTSDAM

Flowers, fresh air and beautiful scenery! What could be better on a warm day and in Berlin’s surroundings? That’s what two landscape architects thought when they turned their passion into a business in 2021: Kraut & Blume. On a field west of Potsdam, in a landscape conservation area directly on the banks of the Wublitz, Anna Buchwald and Lena Riese grow, harvest, fertilize and weed outdoor flowers and arrange sustainable bouquets from native varieties. In their wild bouquets, there is room for everything that the flower field and its surroundings have to offer. Depending on the season, these are sometimes oak-yellow daffodils, sky-blue black cumin and cornflowers, sometimes tall delphiniums, bushy yarrows, fragrant levkojen, phloxes and vetches, and snow-white daisies. But herbs and grasses from the lush field margins also find their place in the bouquets, as do gnarled branches from the surrounding apple and plum trees.

Through their profession as landscape architects, they have a lot of plant knowledge and emphasize growing seasonal, regional and sustainable flowers with short transportation distances and without chemical fertilizers and pesticides. In times of climate change, for example, many drought-resistant perennials find a place in their fields. Depending on the season, their bouquets transport a different mood and color – from the countryside to Berlin’s work and living spaces. If you want to experience this, book two subscriptions at once: a summer and a winter subscription for 5 or 10 bouquets and get a selection of seasonal flowers, grasses, twigs and dried flowers from May to February. Of course, you can also buy the fragrant bouquets as individual orders. PS: These are a very welcome gift at any time of year and for any occasion!

THE WARSAW POP-UP NAIL STUDIO IN BERLIN

THE WARSAW POP-UP NAIL STUDIO IN BERLIN

Stretching out your fingers and shimmying your hands back and forth to let the light hit your new nails in different ways is a simple joy in life. Every movement you make with your hands two days post-manicure is a beautiful sight to behold, even better when someone comments, ‘Ohh, I love your nails’. This sentence was uttered, dare I say it, almost too many times after I had my nails done at Nailed It — a summer pop-up nestled in the middle of Prenzlauer Berg, owned by Olga Urbowicz. Olga’s journey in the nail industry began more than two decades ago and has always been intertwined with her passion for art, music and community. She opened her first store in Warsaw over 13 years ago because she couldn’t find a place that offered both nail services and a space to discuss art and music. “What mattered and still matters the most to me is people,” Olga shared. “Nails were always in second place. But I’ve been doing my craft for 21 years and love it.” Olga built a strong community in Warsaw, where she opened ten salons. Now, she’s bringing that spirit to Berlin. One of the most important parts of Nailed It is the meticulous attention that is paid to hygiene measures. I can confidently say after a ten-year love affair with acrylic nails, I had never seen such attention to detail and hygiene. Not only will you leave with show-stopping claws, but you can also browse their eclectic knick-knacks, from vintage glass to handmade pieces from Mexico, graphics and paintings, and notebooks. No need to worry: this pop-up looks more permanent, and a new location might be coming soon.
