GARTENHAUS: SCHÖNEBERG HAIR SALON FOR ON-TREND STYLES AND SUSTAINABLE TREATMENTS

GARTENHAUS: SCHÖNEBERG HAIR SALON FOR ON-TREND STYLES AND SUSTAINABLE TREATMENTS

Is your hair feeling a bit strained after summer? If your locks are in need of professional attention or your current style just isn’t cutting it, an appointment at Gartenhaus might just be the thing. This Schöneberg hairdresser offers a feel-good experience for both head and hair. Stylists Jill Kugel and Enrico Farkas opened the salon in June 2021 in a courtyard apartment far removed from the Berlin bustle. Inside, you’ll find hints of Japan both in the design and the hair care products from luxury brand Shu Uemura. A hairdresser and make-up artist, Jill knows all the latest trends: curtain fringes, wolf cuts and copper tones. You don’t need to have a precise idea of what you want when you go; the salon team will gladly advise you and share tips and tricks for styling your hair at home like a professional. When I was there, I didn’t just pick up styling know-how – I also discovered that hair is hygroscopic, or porous. That’s why, in addition to the aluminium foil and dye tubes, the cut hair is collected and turned into nets that are used to remove oil from the seas. If it’s a soothing and sustainable retreat for the hair you’re after, this tranquil house ought to be your first port of call.

BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY: APP-BASED INSURANCE HELPER FOR HOSPITALITY OWNERS BY SUREIN

BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY: APP-BASED INSURANCE HELPER FOR HOSPITALITY OWNERS BY SUREIN

Whether you already run a restaurant, bar, café, or are about to take the plunge and open one, this tip is for you! You’ve probably spent time fretting about what could go wrong: from broken plates, and burst pipes to the nightmare scenario of something happening to a guest, the risks in hospitality are numerous. If you are looking to manage those risks in a way that saves time, effort, and lost sleep, the SureIn app might just do the trick. Founded in Berlin, the online platform lets you manage your existing insurance easily and acts as your broker if you want to take out a new policy. If you’re like us, you’ve probably encountered plenty of clunky websites and baffling small print when dealing with your insurance. Doing it by app provides you a simple overview of all your business policies, including premiums, contract terms, and policy items. So when a customer spills their red wine on your brand new upholstery, all you need is a few taps and a swipe, and you can confirm that the damage is covered. The app works for all restaurants, cafes, or bar owners and is free of charge. But best of all, it means you can swap those hours spent doing admin and focus on what you come to work for: taking care of your customers.

BE GOOD TO YOURSELF — MASSAGES AT HOME OR AT WORK FROM SOULHOUSE

BE GOOD TO YOURSELF — MASSAGES AT HOME OR AT WORK FROM SOULHOUSE

We all know how important it is to practice self care, whether it’s meditating, having a bathtub session or – my personal favorite – indulging in a massage. But rather than head to the spa, I decided to make life a bit easier by logging onto Soulhouse, an online self-care platform dedicated to stress-free premium wellness treatments. What makes this service special is that instead of having to travel to get a treatment, the massage therapist will come to wherever you are, whether that’s home or at the office. The booking process via app or online is smooth and simple: you just select the massage type, pick a preferred date and time, type in your address and the available experts will be displayed. Soulhouse currently has more than 100 expert profiles. You can get all the usual treatments, from the gentle, light Wellness massage to a full body Swedish massage or, if you want to keep it traditional, a deep Thai massage. For a real treat for two there’s the Couples massage where two experts give you and your partner or (close) friend a treatment in parallel. Whether you opt for 60, 90 or the full 120 minutes, it’s a lovely joint indulgence and makes a great Valentine’s Day gift.

I myself booked a Classic massage, and I don’t think I’ve ever felt so relaxed in my own house. My massage expert came with everything he needed, including soothing music. Being able to squeeze the session into my weekday schedule was great – knowing that Soulhouse charges around 30 percent less than conventional studios was even better. If you do want the full spa experience, you’ll soon be able to attend Soulhouse’s own “massage boutique” in Berlin. I’m counting those days until my next pampering session…

CELEBRATING GEOMETRY IN FURNITURE — COLORFUL OBJECTS AND INTERIOR CONCEPTS BY JÄLL & TOFTA

CELEBRATING GEOMETRY IN FURNITURE — COLORFUL OBJECTS AND INTERIOR CONCEPTS BY JÄLL & TOFTA

As nice as life in this city is, it’s not compromise-free. If you live in a Berliner Altbau you’ll probably have a floor plan whose wonkiness can turn furniture arranging into a game of Tetris. If you want to bring order to your digs whilst making them look as pretty as possible, the furniture from Jäll & Tofta is definitely worth a look-in. From their Kreuzberg studio, Sina Gwosdzik and Jakob Dannenfeldt have developed a range of design objects and interior concepts that work perfectly in charm-filled but crooked old buildings. The pair’s seamlessly designed pieces are inspired by Bauhaus and Memphis, like the Miami side table whose lacquered wood frame and marble top resembles a Joan Miró painting but has a practical use as a sofa companion. Meanwhile, offering a nostalgic throwback to the 1980s is the 3L Shelf system, which stands ready and waiting for your next cocktail party. The collection includes pieces for all rooms and scenarios, from a bunk bed with integrated shelving that will thrill the little ones to island kitchens offering functionality in small rooms. With these high-impact concepts, Jäll & Tofta show how design can shine in even the most awkward of spaces.

#VANLIFE — CAMPERVAN RENTAL FROM PAULCAMPER FOR SUMMER ADVENTURES ON THE ROAD

#VANLIFE — CAMPERVAN RENTAL FROM PAULCAMPER FOR SUMMER ADVENTURES ON THE ROAD

Cruising down the open road, drifting from place to place before stopping off spontaneously for the night: the campervan life has never been more popular, offering portable, private accommodation that’s Covid-safe. If you are ready to join the community of campers this summer, PaulCamper might have just the right wheels for you. A cross between car sharing and a holiday apartment service, the Berlin-based rental platform offers around 9000 vans, buses, motorhomes and caravans to hire for as long as you want, from three-day trips to Brandenburg to multi-week voyages across Europe. Keen camper Dirk Fehse founded the website in 2013 as a way to link up wannabe campers with vehicle owners looking to share costs (the average van is only used for four weeks a year). This smart idea means you get to try out the camper lifestyle without the big financial investment or the hassle: just choose what dates you want to travel, select the type of vehicle and pick one of the countless vans to rent.

Browsing through the site, you come across an amazing assortment of homes on wheels, from back-to-basics delivery vans to super-luxe American RVs. For the latest tech and Autobahn comfort, you can opt for a brand-new VW camper, or for a trip back in time there’s the classic Hermann Westfalia from 1986 that’s tailor made for sunsets and surfboards. If you are after something really different (and your driving skills are up to the job) the Egon converted fire truck is a big red retro box that’s perfect for those happy to cruise in the slow lane. Whatever model you go for, all vans come with comprehensive insurance and all you need for your hol, including a bed, a fridge or coolbox and a gas stove for your meals on wheels. Time to pick your van, make a plan and get ready to hit the road!
