Is your skin dry, irritated, red? Do you want to give it some extra attention and care? The Powder Room is the right place for you. Since July 2021, you’ll find Daphne’s salon hidden in the backyard of Mitte’s Scheunenviertel. The owner, skin care enthusiast and professed lover of Korean Skin Care moved from Munich to Berlin in 2018 – and thus moved from the cosmetics and beauty industry to the practical craft in her own Powder Room: the ideal place for all questions regarding skin care and health, taking into account the individual’s (often hormonal) distinct needs. Daphne takes time for questions, addresses any acute issues and talks through your regular routine with you before you enjoy an individually tailored facial, extensive facial massages included. Hydrafacials with microdermabrasion rid the skin of impurities, boost cell renewal and provide an extra dose of moisture – without redness and downtime. It’s a lunchtime treatment, so to speak, because you can get back to work right afterward. In addition, the Powder Room, in keeping with the bright and minimalist interior, uses almost exclusively Korean products that have convinced many people, not just Daphne, with their natural ingredients and good tolerance. In other words, with high-tech facials and K-Beauty, you can say bye-bye to the 10-step beauty routine and hello to the perhaps “future” neighborhood esthetician.

The magic of analog photography of course is that you only get to see the photos you took on vacation days or weeks later – when you can reminisce over them. In principle, that’s quite nice. Unfortunately, I am far too impatient and can’t wait to see the pictures. Luckily, there’s the Film Speed Lab. A dropoff and pickup in 24 hours? No problem! Katya, Dima and their team are a seasoned bunch with close to ten years of experience. In addition to classic color and black & white development, they are also one of the few labs in Germany to offer ECN-2 cinema film development. The analog enthusiasts from the Ukrainian capital have only been living in Berlin for a year. Before that, virtually the entire FSL team worked at Fotovramke, an institution for film photography in Kiev. And then came the unthinkable. The worst thing imaginable. Katya and Dima, like so many, were forced to take themselves and their children to safety and flee their homeland. Fotovramke remained open against all odds due to the high demand. Everyone wanted to document the violations of international law. Even Dima and Katya could not simply give in to their felt helplessness and sit quietly waiting. And so, after much deliberation, they opened the Film Speed Lab in Berlin in October 2022. Since then, it has become a meeting place for Ukrainians and photo enthusiasts. Customers became friends and a photo lab became a community – ever grateful for this little piece of Kiev, far away from home in Prenzlauer Berg.

Coworking spaces: I immediately think of white desks, exposed brickwork, telephone booths and – of course – table football. While this concept can work, there is a different way of doing things – as the folks at Denizen have demonstrated. Their workspace is more stylish, more inviting, more contemporary and more feature-filled. Founded by Michael End, Darja Gogunova, David Gregor and David Turnbull in 2022, Denizen is all about offering space that helps you achieve work-life balance. The focus here is on providing not just a place to work, but lots of digital and analog extras too. This includes the likes of a concierge desk so you can get your packages accepted even if you are on the phone with a client. And the digital part? For starters, some of the creators have a background in tech, and they have created an in-house app that lets you order food and drinks directly to your seat and notifies you of upcoming community events. There’s also in-house catering, letting you save time on meal prep by grabbing lunch from the kitchen.
In addition to banana bread and chia pudding snacks, there’s a regularly-changing lunch menu with modern classics like soba noodle salad and grilled paneer and tomato salad. As for self-care, there are onsite shower cabins (to freshen up after your lunchtime run?), changing rooms and a yoga space which also accommodates workshops and meetings. The whole thing is known as The House, and it does feel homely: there are classic furniture pieces, wood on the walls, long curtains on the windows and earthy colors. The overall look? Dignified, warm and “decelerated”. Long tables with built-in lights create closeness, while there are individual tables and secluded corners for solo time. The team have experience in hospitality (they worked for 25hours-Hotels and Design Hotels, among others), and it shows: Denizen almost feels like a hotel, the only difference being you don’t stay overnight. Work-life balance: we got you!

Is your hair feeling a bit strained after summer? If your locks are in need of professional attention or your current style just isn’t cutting it, an appointment at Gartenhaus might just be the thing. This Schöneberg hairdresser offers a feel-good experience for both head and hair. Stylists Jill Kugel and Enrico Farkas opened the salon in June 2021 in a courtyard apartment far removed from the Berlin bustle. Inside, you’ll find hints of Japan both in the design and the hair care products from luxury brand Shu Uemura. A hairdresser and make-up artist, Jill knows all the latest trends: curtain fringes, wolf cuts and copper tones. You don’t need to have a precise idea of what you want when you go; the salon team will gladly advise you and share tips and tricks for styling your hair at home like a professional. When I was there, I didn’t just pick up styling know-how – I also discovered that hair is hygroscopic, or porous. That’s why, in addition to the aluminium foil and dye tubes, the cut hair is collected and turned into nets that are used to remove oil from the seas. If it’s a soothing and sustainable retreat for the hair you’re after, this tranquil house ought to be your first port of call.
