FRIEDEL RICHTER — SEASONAL VEGGIES & TENDER ORGANIC MEAT

FRIEDEL RICHTER — SEASONAL VEGGIES & TENDER ORGANIC MEAT

When you walk into Friedel Richter Restaurant, there is a moment of confusion as you look for a menu on the table, only to hear a strange noise and raise your head to see the menu on the wall, displayed on an airport board transported from Vienna. The menu is short, usually consisting of no more than 10 items, but always creative. Opened in 2014, Friedel Richter perfects the modern German kitchen, working with local farmers to source the freshest vegetables and organic meats. The menu, inspired by seasonal ingredients, changes every week as cook Ulf Lindenhan finds new and imaginative ways of combining the old with the new. Despite the small menu, meat lovers and vegetarians alike will find dishes to their liking. I tried their Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich and their lamb – in both cases the meat melted in my mouth. Owners Stefan Friedel and Liane Richter combine technology with their everyday doings, experimenting with robots and food: they built a watering system for their in-house herbs, as well as letting their customers pay with bitcoin, leading the way for the future of restaurants. The cozy, friendly atmosphere, weekly menu, and unique approach to food are sure to make you want to visit this place on a regular basis. (Text: Janar Siniloo / Photo: Daniel Farò)

ANTJE WEWER RECCOMENDS: JAMES BIERGARTEN

ANTJE WEWER RECCOMENDS: JAMES BIERGARTEN

Finally, finally there is a beer garden where one can enjoy some peace and quiet after a dip in Gorinsee. After my years in Munich I was spoiled for day trips. I’ve found many an excellent lake for swimming, but a restaurant with good food and traditional checkered tablecloths is a rare find. The latter still isn’t available at James – it’s too cool for that kind of kitsch – but there are traditional fresh German Brezeln, delicious organic Bratwurst from Gut Temmen, Andechser beer on tap, and home-made cucumber salad. Nicole Schuman from Pappa E Ciccia is responsible for the small but excellent selection of dishes. Melanie dal Canton, who operates MDC Cosmetics in Prenzlauer Berg and lives in Panketal, discovered the fairytale-esque cottage while out on a walk and summarily christened it “James”. It was love at first sight. The little bungalow, which is beautifully sunlit until late in the evening, boasts an idyllic setting with an unobstructed view of the neighbouring fields, where the Haflingers of the next-door Hobi-Müller-Ranch graze in their paddock. (Text: Antje Wewer/ Photos: Frank Griebe)

JULIA KNOLLE RECOMMENDS: PANAMA

JULIA KNOLLE RECOMMENDS: PANAMA

It was only a matter of time before Potsdamerstrasse got its own restaurant: in addition to the Andreas Murkudis concept store, the Swedish brand Acne Studios and a handful of galleries, Panama restaurant and bar is now also open. Before the historical scandal of the Panama Papers, the children’s book “The Trip to Panama” filled young minds with images of a beautiful and distant land. This symbiosis of the exotic and tradition is exactly what attracted Ludwig Cramer-Klett to the concept, and why his 3rd restaurant (after Katz Orange in Mitte and Candy on Bone in Kreuzberg) takes its name. The whimsical menu reads like a journey to another world: divided into “Leaves & Flowers” and “Grains & Vegetables”, each dish is a tiny miracle prepared under the direction of Sophia Rudolph. My favorite: the venison tartare with shiitake mushrooms, currants and nigella seeds, filled with roasted eggplant cream, goats cheese and watermelon. For the perfect end to the evening, move on to the bar for a Basil Smash, with basil and a marvellous touch of ginger. PATRICIA STAFFA RECOMMENDS: HOLY FLAT!

PATRICIA STAFFA RECOMMENDS: HOLY FLAT!

The newly-opened but long awaited Holy Flat! in Neukölln is the vegetarian answer to the flood of burger places that have inundated the streets around this area. The Flats and Bowls they have on offer are so delicious that they will tempt even the most loyal of meat-lovers; it’s hard not to be delighted by the composition of each dish. As a self-proclaimed Bowl fan, my favourite is the Red Bowl – with beetroot, quinoa, hummus and avocado, it tastes simply heavenly. The Flats, homemade flatbread made from organic spelt dough and filled with fresh ingredients, are particularly intriguing, with their unusual and original variations. The dough is made fresh every day and baked to order. Brothers Bitz and Batz (nicknames, of course) have launched a great concept with Holy Flat!, taking delicious vegetarian meals and preparing them in a stylish but very relaxed atmosphere. In addition to the many delicacies, the wall painting by Japanese street artist Twoone leaves one dreaming about wild forests. Magnificent in every way! (Text: Patricia Staffa)

NINA BUSCHLE RECOMMENDS: FACCIOLA

NINA BUSCHLE RECOMMENDS: FACCIOLA

When I first stumbled upon this discrete Italian food and wine place around the corner, I knew I had found my second home. The decoration itself is rather simple, which helps you to focus on the impressive assortment of Italian wines. The products offered in this Kreuzberg-based establishment come mainly from the Piedmont region, where the owner Aurora is from. Luckily, I went there with my Italian neighbor, whose sparkling eyes were the best proof possible that the food served at Facciola is true to its roots, and of the best quality. Aurora also offers affordable workshops on diverse topics such as wine and pasta making, and sometimes the venue even hosts small concerts by local artists. If you are looking for a location for an event, then the crew is happy to contribute to your concept and help out. However what strikes me most about Facciola is the service itself; it is one of the few places in Berlin where you can receive a truly kind and fun treatment.
