RESTAURANT MOOS AT SILENT GREEN KULTURQUARTIER

RESTAURANT MOOS AT SILENT GREEN KULTURQUARTIER

The name came easily. The owner of Restaurant Moos, Charly Huber, has a soft spot for a certain kind of landscape with marshy characteristics, “Moos”, so he created a place that is natural, earthy, and rooted in the soil. The name “Moos” simply sounds green, and that’s reflected in the green of their garden and in the dishes that they serve. The restaurant offers cuisine inspired by the countryside – rustic, down to earth, and hearty – yet creative and not the least bit stodgy. The menu also includes a variety of options for vegans and vegetarians, including delicious smoked and roasted vegetables. You could meet your friends here for Hong Kong rice porridge for breakfast, BBQ eggplant for lunch, or coffee and a variety of delectable cakes. Restaurant Moos opened about a year ago to serve visitors to the silent green Kulturquartier. Now the restaurant itself has become an institution in its own right, attracting people beyond the cultural center’s audience. Located next to the former Berlin-Wedding crematory, the old tower rises high into the sky, tranquil and quiet, simply beautiful. (Text: Olga Schlosser / Photos: Katharina Mau)

A POP-UP THAI SPOT AT DOTTIR

A POP-UP THAI SPOT AT DOTTIR

The Dottir Team is on a journey. For two weeks, they’re setting up a tent in Hong Kong. In the meantime, their Mitte location will be taken over as a Thai restaurant. Charming New York cook Dalad Kambhu and the artist Rirkrit Tiravanijawill present their interpretation of contemporary Thai cuisine. There will be a fixed sharing menu, so it’s recommended to come in groups. Our many-course menu consisted of raw fish “cooked” in lemon and ginger over a traditional spicy Thai curry with homemade ice cream. Then came the Thai-inspired drinks from the Pauly Bar bartenders and coordinated wine. The Pop-up will only be there until 6.8.2016, so we recommend that you make a reservation fast! KIM BENJAMIN RECOMMENDS: ROSA CALETA

KIM BENJAMIN RECOMMENDS: ROSA CALETA

Rosa Caleta has been one of Kreuzberg’s best kept secrets for the last seven years, and I’ve been coming back ever since my first visit. This cozy Jamaican restaurant offers some of the best cakes I’ve tasted in Germany. I had never thought that amazing cakes and tasty Jamaican food could coexist, especially in Berlin! Needless to say, they have traditional Jamaican dishes, too, but with a European twist. Stand-outs are the jerk chicken, spicy roasted pork with cornbread stuffing, and Jamaican fried chicken with mac and cheese. For vegans, there’s an amazing guava jerk tofu, a personal favorite. They also have one of Berlin’s best rum cocktail menus: highlights include “Make Me Young and Beautiful,“ as well as their “Creamy Emily” – it’s their strongest drink and will make you feel invincible after just a few sips. Last but not least, Kirk and Troy, the two fantastic guys running the restaurant, truly make the experience special. With advance notice, Troy can create special dishes for specific dietary requirements, like the amazing apple and strawberry crumble he made for my gluten-intolerant friend. The only warning: don’t come if you’re in a hurry. Things run on Jamaican time, which is just fine by me. (Text: Kim Benjamin / Photos: Rei Matsuoka)

NEW IN THE WEST: HIGH-END BURGERS AT THE BUTCHER

NEW IN THE WEST: HIGH-END BURGERS AT THE BUTCHER

Not far from Savignyplatz, in the middle of busy Kantstrasse, you’ll find the latest addition to Berlin’s burger scene, The Butcher. Although there is no shortage of burgers in this city, Berliners never seem to grow tired of them – and this time, they’re definitely right to keep coming back. This is more than just a burger joint: the light-filled, industrial interior speaks to that. This concept – a high-end burger restaurant – comes from Amsterdam. Definitely recommendable: the burger with Aberdeen Angus beef, babaganoush, tahini and oriental spices with crispy chicken wings or Mama’s Meatball Sliders. There are meatless alternatives but in terms of burgers The Butcher really is the domain of meat lovers; the high-quality, certified-organic meat will keep even the most discerning palates satisfied. The drinks at the bar also come highly recommended. The breakfast menu with poached eggs with avocado, watercress and sourdough bread or shakshuka also offers plenty of vegetarian options. DOSA & CHUTNEY: AUTHENTIC INDIAN CUISINE AT CHUTNIFY

DOSA & CHUTNEY: AUTHENTIC INDIAN CUISINE AT CHUTNIFY

The search for real, delicious Indian cuisine has come to an end in Neukölln. We already know and love their Prenzlauer Berg spot, and now Chutnify has opened a second restaurant on Pflügerstrasse. A sharp and deeply authentic rendition of some of the most mouthwatering foods from South India, each dish delivers an intense burst of flavor that, thankfully, is a long way from the old, ailing creamy curry. Owner Aparna Aurora has an uncompromising attitude towards the make-up and selection of foods. The dosa is central to the menu, coming in a range of forms that includes a veggie dosa, filled with fresh, seasonal vegetables, and a tandoori chicken version, which I personally and emphatically recommend. The Pani Puri, a crispy morsel that you can fill with colorful vegetable mixes and a spiced sauce, is particularly delicious. A variety of thalis served with two chutneys of your choice (coconut and the tamarind are favorites), rice bowls, and street food appetisers, will be sure to keep India-deprived taste-seekers coming back. Dining under low light in the roaringly atmospheric interior, each mouthful should be savored alongside one of the best mango lassis in Berlin, or, if the mood takes you, a very tasty and inventive cocktail.
