MORE THAN A MERINGUE — PERFECT PAVLOVAS AT MARC PATISSERIE IN NEUKÖLLN

MORE THAN A MERINGUE — PERFECT PAVLOVAS AT MARC PATISSERIE IN NEUKÖLLN

In September 2022 a small patisserie opened on Reuterstraße: Marc. Inside are minimalist cabinets where small white tarts are displayed like expensive jewels, garnished with chocolate, pistachios and fruit. Yes: this is a whole shop full of pavlovas. When I first saw this, my heart skipped a beat: when I was little, my mother would make meringues from beaten egg whites left over from other recipes, whipping cream and vanilla to go on top. They tasted how I thought heaven might taste. Many years later, when I was in Paris for the first time, I ordered an unknown dessert and discovered that my mother’s sweet concoction in fact had a name: that of the ballerina Anna Pavlova, whose tutu is the said to be the inspiration for this dessert of meringue, cream and fruit. From then on, I would tell people about my favorite French dessert at every opportunity. I always left out the fact that New Zealand and Australia in fact lay claim to this dessert as their national dish – France just sounded better.

Marc himself has been a presence in Neukölln for a long time: the French pastry chef was a key figure at now-closed cafe Two and Two. Marc’s own shop was designed by Antoine Fichaux, with a lighting concept from Altbeau. At the moment the options are limited to coffee and pavlova, which incidentally was the chef’s signature dessert back in his student days. Will the selection grow? Perhaps, Marc says, but he doesn’t want to promise anything. And he doesn’t have to: these little white tartlets are more than enough to make you happy.

DESIGN BESTSELLER — FURNITURE AND INTERIOR OBJECTS BY ARNE JACOBSEN, USM HALLER AND MORE

DESIGN BESTSELLER — FURNITURE AND INTERIOR OBJECTS BY ARNE JACOBSEN, USM HALLER AND MORE

The iconic Series 7 chair by designer Arne Jacobsen, distributed by the Fritz Hansen brand, adds a touch of casual elegance to any dining room. The curved seat, with its sliced grain veneer and distinctive lines, is an object with character – an understated piece of functional furniture. Then there’s the timeless sideboard from USM Haller, featuring a chrome-plated steel frame. These objects and many more are currently on sale at Design Bestseller: If you’re redecorating a living or dining room, you can add one more person to your dinner party of five since the sixth chair is on the house. Located at Galeries Lafayette, the showroom sells not just furniture but also stylish accessories like glasses and glassware from Serax and candlesticks from Scandinavian brand Lassen for beautiful lighting. The lamps from Occhio also add a pleasant touch of light.

Light is important for the Munich-based brand – after all, the whole room depends on it. Have the wrong lighting, and even the most beautiful interior design concept will be a flop. Design Bestseller’s lamps are eye-catching, not just because they light up the room but because of their own forms. If you’re looking for an iconic accessory, want to invest in a long-lasting and high-quality design, or simply want to be inspired, this is the shop for you. Of course, online is always an option: whether it’s balcony chairs or an office table, a dining room lamp or a mirror for the hallway, you’ll find variety – and lots of it! You might want to stop by the shop and peruse the curated selection of furniture and accessories. You’ll also find guidance on brands, costs, comfort and combos. Only question remains: which design suits your style?

POETIC PATTERNS AND COLORS — BOLON FLOORS COLLECTION AT THE CHÂTEAU ROYAL HOTEL

POETIC PATTERNS AND COLORS — BOLON FLOORS COLLECTION AT THE CHÂTEAU ROYAL HOTEL

Tilia, Osier, Cilia – these poetic names might sound like they’re right out of Sylvia Plath, but they’re actually some of the latest shades from Bolon, the time-honored, family-owned Swedish company that has been a true design institution in the field of floor coverings and carpets for over 70 years. The shades in their new collection, Botany, are every bit as beautiful as their names. How about a floor in Chestnut, Honey or Sage? Or what about patterning all three? Next Thursday (20.10.22), Bolon invites you to let your imagination run wild with a breathtaking installation at their launch event. And where better than in the art-savvy Château Royal hotel! Color and material aren’t the only focus of the day: there will also be talks where you can learn more about design, product development and sustainability. After all, sustainability has been one of the cornerstones of the company’s philosophy for three generations. And with colors like Rain, Canyon and Spearmint, it’s only natural.

BEDS FOR STYLISH SLUMBERING — AUPING ESSENTIAL POP-UP STORE

BEDS FOR STYLISH SLUMBERING — AUPING ESSENTIAL POP-UP STORE

At night and in dreams, completely different worlds open their doors. You might even say we all have two lives! In our waking lives, we do all that we want and can – and some of what we should and must. When it’s time to sleep, our true free time begins, when all we have to do is let go. But the transition to dreamland is not always easy, as you might know. A beautiful bedroom can help – as can the right bed. It’s often on holiday that you discover a whole new set of bed options: a luxurious box-spring bed in a fancy vacation home, or a heavenly night in a hotel that makes you question your own mattress. But you don’t have to travel that far to take your bed to the next level: Next week, the Auping Essential pop-up store is making a stop in Berlin. The Dutch brand has been dedicated to the dark half of the day since 1888. Yes, the Dutch have had a few years under their belt to perfect comfortable sleep. They know that some people prefer to sink into their mattress a bit, or even feel embraced by it, while others prefer firm support.

A brief assessment of your preferences is all it takes to design the bed of your dreams. And if the mattress fits, the rest is a piece of cake. This is where it starts with the Auping: choose your topper, headboard and slat base. Then it’s time for the frame. One of Auping’s bestsellers, the “Essential” frame, is sustainable and made from 100 percent recycled materials. To celebrate its 10th anniversary, it’s available in a limited edition in “Sunny yellow”. If you dream of waking up in a bright and sunny bed, you might want to stop by the pop-up store in Mitte where the bed is currently being displayed. And maybe you’ll be lucky: an Essential bed in Sunny Yellow is being raffled. But in case this dream doesn’t come true, investing in a good bed is probably the best way to ensure a good night. Sweet dreams indeed.

FORM AND FUNCTION — MODERN DESIGN OBJECTS AT THE ZEUGHAUSMESSE EXHIBITION

FORM AND FUNCTION — MODERN DESIGN OBJECTS AT THE ZEUGHAUSMESSE EXHIBITION

If your fingers have been stuck to your smartphone lately, maybe it’s time for a change of haptics – at this weekend’s Zeughausmesse (13–16.10.2022). Held at the Kühlhaus am Gleisdreieck, the four-day event is all about exploring materials. Under one roof you’ll find artists and designers from all kinds of disciplines, including jewelry, ceramics, fashion and interior design. All explore materials and form in creative and often innovative ways. You’ll find objects which have a clear function and objects whose purpose is more artistic. The latter applies to the free-formed crystal elements by Veronika Beckh, made from glass that is cut, polished, glued and turned into shapes that elude interpretation but certainly not your gaze. Meanwhile, designer Anastasiya Koshcheeva-Rasehorn has devoted herself to birch, transforming its light bark into accessories and even furniture. For Birgit Wortmann the focus is on silk, which she uses to hand weave colorful scarves. The market gives you the chance to meet the designers and ask them about their designs, materials, production methods and uses. All handmade, these objects reveal a lot about their designers – and, no doubt, their future owners…
