CHRISTMAS CHARITIES — FOUR BERLIN CAUSES TO SUPPORT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

If you want to help a Berlin charity this Christmas but don’t know where to start, allow us to suggest some worthwhile local causes. Each One Teach One (EOTO) is a community-based education and empowerment project for black, African and Afro-diasporic people based in Wedding. You can support EOTO’S work, which includes running a library of African-diasporic literature, by making an online donation. Next up is the LGBT+ refugee accommodation run by Schwulenberatung Berlin, who offer a safe home to gay and trans refugees who face attacks and abuse in shared accommodation. To support these highly vulnerable people you can make an online donation. Although there are numerous services helping Berlin’s homeless community, getting the right help to rough sleepers quickly is still a challenge. Berliner Kältehilfe is a service that coordinates all this support, from emergency accommodation to soup kitchens. The charity even has an app where you can get nearby assistance if you see someone who needs it. The service welcomes donations in the form of clothing or cash. Meanwhile, Berlin-based Amadeu Antonio Stiftung works all over Germany to eliminate racism and hate crime. Named after Amadeu António Kiowa, a young black migrant worker murdered in a racist attack in Eberswalde in 1990, the foundation supports victims of hate crime and funds initiatives to steer young people away from extremism. With your online donation you can choose to support the whole organization or a specific project. Happy donating! (Text: Benji Haughton / Photo: Alex Motoc)
