MEXICO AURA: THE MYTH OF POSSESSION — GODS, MUSIC AND DANCE AT THE HUMBOLDT FORUM

MEXICO AURA: THE MYTH OF POSSESSION — GODS, MUSIC AND DANCE AT THE HUMBOLDT FORUM

Night-time at a Mexican museum and refuse dumps outside are burning. It’s a story from disgraced journalist Claas Relotius, one supposedly recalling everyday Mexican life, from border militias to Mayan rituals. This is just a small taste of the subject matter dealt with by Mexico Aura: The Myth of Possession, a musical theater piece premiering on 21.07.2022 at the Humboldt Forum. Mexican composer Diana Syrse, authors Eva Hibernia and John von Düffel and US choreographer Christopher Roman join an international team of five dancers, three singers and the Zafraan Ensemble for what is being billed as “an intricate performative journey into our global present”. Co-produced by the Neuköllner Oper, the piece dives into the history of Mexico, with sounds from indigenous instruments blended with contemporary music. Bodies and music about myths, (interpretive) power, possession, obsession and divine longings are brought together with dramatic results. Far from your typical museum visit, this show is a wild trip into Mexico’s past and present.
