DION & GEFOLGE: WHEN CULINARY DELI MEETS CONVENIENCE STORE

DION & GEFOLGE: WHEN CULINARY DELI MEETS CONVENIENCE STORE

Since August 2017, Kreuzkölln’s Dion & Gefolge has been supplying its Kiez with niche local and Italian delicacies — from fine wines and spirits to pastas, sauces, and small treats like decadent chocolate truffles. The pricing is fair and the concept is refreshingly undefined: convenient store, supermarket, event space… “We want to open up the shop for local matters, so we’re making it available as a platform for creative people and artists,” co-founder André Ebeling explains. While you’re free to wander through the tightly curated selection of Mangalitsa ham, homemade pickles or fine sardines to pair with your favorite smoky whiskey, you can also sample your way through the assortment during one a tasting events — regular occurrences that are listed on their Facebook page. Whether you stop by for an on-the-go refreshment or pick up ingredients for a weeknight dinner at home, Dion & Gefolge is an inviting and enticing culinary destination. COLORS AND FLAVORS THAT POP AT BIKINI BERLIN’S NEW KANTINI

COLORS AND FLAVORS THAT POP AT BIKINI BERLIN’S NEW KANTINI

Kantini, a brand new food market located in the concept shopping mall Bikini Berlin, is the latest contender for Berlin’s most Instagrammable interior — and set to elevate lunch breaks in the city’s west. The prolific designer Werner Aisslinger and his studio are behind Kantini’s interior concept. Bold graphic grids meet LA-inspired flora and plush custom seating in a Hockney-esque pastel palette. Nab a prime seat in the loggia, fronted by large windows which overlook Berlin Zoo’s aviaries. Then take your pick of Kantini’s culinary offerings: Thirteen permanent stalls, plus two rotating pop-ups, represent ten different cuisines. Berlin fixtures like the Vietnamese Torstraße institution Royals and Rice are in the mix, next to newcomers such as Sons of Mana. This Hawaiian joint caught Cee Cee’s attention with its umami-loaded poke bowls — like the “Flamed Tuna”: succulent sashimi on a bed of rice, loaded with tangy tomato salsa, wakame and edamame guacamole and doused in lime-soya sauce. Fresh and zesty, it was as pleasing to the palette as Kantini’s interior is to the eye. BICHOU — FRENCH CLASSICS MADE WITH THE SEASONS

BICHOU — FRENCH CLASSICS MADE WITH THE SEASONS

Searching for a certain “Je ne sais quoi” in Berlin? Look no further than Neukölln’s Bichou, a French farmhouse eatery-cum-Parisian bistro that’s filling the area’s lunch gap with delicious, fresh and accessible food. You’ll be able to get acquainted with both owners — chef Thomas working in the open kitchen cooking and Marion greeting guests with a warm smile at the counter. Made with modern French cooking techniques, their caramelized tarte Tatin oozes tradition and their ever-changing quiches leave you wanting more. Marion and Thomas seek out the highest quality ingredients, and make nearly everything they can in house — even rolling their own oats for their granola. Plus, with a zero waste ethos, nearly nothing goes to waste. Similar to another Neukölln favorite, Isla Coffee, Bichou uses milk left from making coffees as a base for their milk jam — a perfect partner to their buttery “brioche à tête.” With a small weekly menu that features salads, soups, sandwiches and quiches, you’ll always be able to sample the season at Bichou. JAPANESE TRADITION AT HOME IN FRIEDRICHSHAIN: HAKO RAMEN

JAPANESE TRADITION AT HOME IN FRIEDRICHSHAIN: HAKO RAMEN

At Hako, they know how to do ramen. But what makes their version of the ever-popular bowl of broth so divine? Toothsome noodles a plenty, of course, with a sprinkle of dried seaweed, crispy menma and green onions that add zing and texture to every bite. Opened in September 2017, Hako has been serving up ramen that Berliners are happily devouring on the daily. Take a glance at the minimal menu and add welcomed sides of pork gyoza potstickers, edamame and iced green tea to delight the senses. Their miso based broth is a real winner — the bowl finished with unctuous noodles and a beautiful tea-stained soft boiled egg. With paper origami lampshades hanging from the mahogany wood surrounds, you’ll find yourself sitting in some kind of culinary theatre — just as you might find in downtown Tokyo. Hako Ramen is a new spot that’s nearly too good to share, so head there early and let yourself be transported spoon after spoon. (Text & Photos: Emilie Wade)
