DZAINO STUDIO — HANDMADE UPCYCLED DENIM BAGS

DZAINO STUDIO — HANDMADE UPCYCLED DENIM BAGS

Don’t let your new years resolution go unfulfilled — get yourself a sustainably made denim yoga mat bag and you’ll be dying to show it off any chance you get. Since 2015, denim duo Julia and Hanna have been transforming the way Berliners look at jeans with a laid back, alternative way of wearing denim under the name Dzaino. Their practical collection contains upcycled denim bags of all shapes and sizes, but their “Weekender” bag is seriously perfect — just big enough for a weekend away, but small enough to use every day. For me, this bag’s design has a unique sense of 90’s zeitgeist, and I love it. Situated in a little nook off Nansenstraße, Dzaino’s new studio is where they make their bags, by hand, with care, patience and attention to detail. The brand’s ethos is simple: to make the consumer aware of who makes the item, how it is made, and what materials/fabric it’s made from. By giving new life to neglected denim, their collection is extremely wearable and gives you yet another way to go green. (Text: Emilie Wade / Photos: Emilie Wade, Dzaino)

ILKA BAUERMANN RECOMMENDS: 19GRAMS CHAUSSEE

ILKA BAUERMANN RECOMMENDS: 19GRAMS CHAUSSEE

Upon opening the door to 19grams Chaussee, the beautiful design unmistakably stands out. The opulent, elongated wooden counter is reminiscent of a self-service coffee shop at first, but the café actually offers table service. In an area covering three whole stories, seating options are plentiful. Once seated comfortably at a table, the server will hand out the regularly changing brunch menu. There is something for everyone’s palate: vegan, gluten-free and even nut-free dishes are on the menu. The poached eggs have been a real hit from the very beginning. Those who have a sweet tooth can enjoy sensational cakes from the in-house bakery. A good cup of coffee is instrumental to a successful brunch – that is where 19grams excels, of course, being the youngest child of the Tres Cabezas family, which was founded more than 15 years ago by Robert Stock and Sascha Spittel. The coffee comes from their private roastery. In addition to their own label, they offer a rotating selection of filtered coffees and espressos every month – all of which are very fine specialty coffees indeed. PLANET FRIENDLY SPARKLES: PROJEKT GLITTER

PLANET FRIENDLY SPARKLES: PROJEKT GLITTER

First launched in 2016, Projekt Glitter is a company that strives to do things differently. From London to Berlin, founder Jeen comes from a background in product design, making her skills an integral part of her company. Their unique glitter is made up of a special biodegradable film derived from plant cellulose meaning you can wear and dispose of the sparkles without guilt. Plus, the raw ingredients are ethically sourced and certified compostable. They sell all sorts of funky and classic color combinations and glitter types, but we found that their gel packets make it that much easier to dive right in. Conscious raver, festival follower, or something entirely different — Projekt Glitter will add a positive vibe to every party. (Text: Emilie Wade / Photos: Emilie Wade, Projekt Glitter)

From the packaging to the scent creation to the production, Maya does everything herself – a true inspiration to creative entrepreneurs. Each candle is poured by hand, with simple scents selected for their therapeutic properties like floral jasmine, warm amber, and subtle green fig. Lighting up a Garden State candle leads to an effortless olfactory atmosphere that’s both luminous and pure. Sporting a logo inspired by her loving adopted dog, Louee — Maya donates part of the profit to support Tierschutz in Berlin, making a purchase from Garden State beneficial for more than just your living room. TUSCAN SCHIACCIATA & CANTUCCI: UN FORNETTO

TUSCAN SCHIACCIATA & CANTUCCI: UN FORNETTO

Walking into Un Fornetto, the unmistakable scent of freshly baked bread might lead you to close your eyes and inhale deeply — or at least that was our first instinct. The small café and bakery opened in July 2017, laying tantalizing sheets of schiacciata (also called focaccia) in their glass display case alongside golden Italian-style schockobrötchen and baskets nearly overflowing with the cutest cantucci we’ve ever seen — not to mention the glorious crusty Tuscan bread lining shelves in the back. Try a little sample and you’ll be hooked on the sweet, crunchy but not hard cantucci with a slight chew in the center that has to be one of the most satisfying textures ever. The friendly faces behind the counter will tell you all about the options if you’re looking to make your own Italian sandwich with their fresh schiacciata, or you can simply order a hefty slice studded with green olives or topped with sliced potato and rosemary (plus, it’s naturally vegan!). Delicious, easy and quick – Un Fornetto is our new go-to for a Tuscan taste escape. (Text: Devan Grimsrud / Photos: Emilie Wade)
