From torchlight tours of the Stasi Museum to late night stargazing at the observatory, dozens of institutions are teaming up for Lange Nacht der Museen, the after-hours culture and science marathon next Saturday (24.08.2024). For one night only 75 museums across the city will be staying open late for midnight science demos, twilight workshops and candlelit stories. In all, there are 750 events happening from 18h to 2h, and a single ticket is all you need to take part. This year’s theme is those things that are hidden, locked away – or at least a bit outside the norm. And what could be less normal than: celebrities. Yes, The Neue Nationalgalerie is showing you how to draw your favorite stars with a Warhol-inspired workshop – part of an exhibition by the fame-fixated American artist called “Velvet Rage and Beauty”. Meanwhile, over at the Jewish Museum the act of lovemaking is on the agenda with Let’s Talk about Sex, a series of guided tours of exhibits and artworks that examine the intersection of sex and Jewish culture (tours throughout the evening).
Next up: your chance to get close to a real life Tesla (no, not that one) at the Energy Museum in Lankwitz. Join from 22h and witness a giant Tesla coil come alive during a demo of the function and physics of this high-voltage piece of kit. With the night still (relatively) young, it’s time to lace up those dancing shoes and head to the Museum für Kommunikation Berlin where from 23h The Earthly Delights Mini Ball will welcome voguers from Berlin’s Ballroom Community to the main stage. Finally, round off the night with a cocktail at Fotografiska Berlin soundtracked by vinyl from DJ Killafollowed by an early hours concert at the Kurt Mühlenhaupt Museum. Who needs sleep, eh?
