STATE OPERA FOR ALL: CLASSICAL MUSIC WITH ONLY THE SKY ABOVE YOU

STATE OPERA FOR ALL: CLASSICAL MUSIC WITH ONLY THE SKY ABOVE YOU

Imagine transforming a space right in the middle of a hectic metropolis into an open auditorium for Daniel Barenboim’s orchestra? Well, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden is doing just that by taking to the streets, or rather Bebelplatz, once again. For one weekend only, you will be able to enjoy the sight and sound of the Staatsoper Berlin with only the sky above you, seeing the opera – literally – in a new light. Events start this Saturday (15.06.2019, 15h) with a live big-screen broadcast of Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde” directed by Dmitri Tcherniakov, with Barenboim conducting. The outdoor music continues on Sunday 16.06.2019 at 13h with an open-air symphony concert by the Staatskapelle Berlin, including works by Mendelssohn and Brahms. A violin concerto featuring prize-winning violinist Jiyoon Lee is bound to be a highlight. But the Opera for All weekend has always been more than just music: it’s about bringing Berliners of all sorts – old and young, opera buffs and newcomers – together. Our tip for these free-of-charge performances: bring your own chair and picnic for the full outdoor experience.
