ANAHITA SADIGHI — WHAT YOU SEEK IS SEEKING YOU: INTERDISCIPLINARY DIALOG OF CULTURES

ANAHITA SADIGHI — WHAT YOU SEEK IS SEEKING YOU: INTERDISCIPLINARY DIALOG OF CULTURES

Not far from Savignyplatz in Berlin-Charlottenburg, the story of the West Berlin Renaissance continues: Anahita Sadighi, Berlin’s current gallery owner of the moment, is consolidating her previous galleries, “Anahita – Arts of Asia,” and “Anahita Contemporary,” into a new concept that will now bear only her name. For almost a decade, her approach has been both daring and trend-setting: ancient art meets contemporary positions, always with the aim of making underrepresented themes visible in the cultural landscape. Under the guidance of renowned architect Pierre Jorge Gonzalez, a new, interdisciplinary home for Anahita’s graceful balancing act between different genres, eras, and countries has been created at Schlüterstraße 16. Her inaugural exhibition, titled “What you seek is seeking you” — a quote from the Persian poet Rumi — serves as a reminder to stay true to your own vision and follow your own path unwaveringly. Perhaps this is why the Rumi quote is emblazoned in the original language above the new-old entrance or because it is to be understood as a title for Anahita’s work itself. With her first exhibition, she not only pays tribute to her family origins but also defines her new direction as a gallery owner: Monumental, sculptural installations by Dieter Detzner meet textile works from the Congo, unique Persian nomadic kilims, antique ceramics, photographs by Yumna Al-Arashi, and a painting by Wenxin Zheng. These artists have long encouraged Anahita in her vision and accompanied her on her journey. Because: “What you seek is seeking you…!”

HOT HOT HOT AND REALLY TASTY: RACLEE TURNS RACLETTE INTO AN EVENT AND DELIVERS THE EXPERIENCE TO YOUR HOME

HOT HOT HOT AND REALLY TASTY: RACLEE TURNS RACLETTE INTO AN EVENT AND DELIVERS THE EXPERIENCE TO YOUR HOME

I’d say the season for it runs from October to March, but to be honest, you can tempt me with some even in the height of summer – we’re talking about raclette. The cheese of all cheeses – for me at least. Now, as the year draws to a close and winter begins, it’s peak time for melted cheese and Raclée has got it covered. More specifically – Amélie (a British cheesemonger) and Florence (a French cheesemaker) do. They also have the matching Chäsbrätel and the machines that turn the firm, round organic cheese from Appenzell in Switzerland into liquid gold. The whole thing is served here in Berlin on smoked potatoes from Big Stuff BBQ. Choose whether you want to go with Local Flavors (Spreewald gherkin), Trendy Topping (fermented veggies) or Meaty (with Italian coppa). Preferably one after the other. You have a few days to do this, because the Raclée ladies are popping up at the Vagabund Brewery (08.-10.12.2023). You can combine your cheese tasting with some gift shopping and repeat the same experience a weekend later at the other end of the city at Arena. Want to share the authentic German raclette experience with a friend at your kitchen table? You can and it’s super simple: this year, the Raclée team is also offering their raclette machines for hire to use at home – plus half a wheel of cheese.

Not to mention the obligatory pickles and a personal intro on how to use the machine, because we’re not talking about a run-of-the-mill table grill here. So if you want to take your raclette game to the next level, here you go. All that’s missing are some other cheese-loving friends and the decision of what to put under, over or between your raclette bliss. I’ll just say kimchi, but this is where you can quickly devolve into the pizza Hawaii-style discussions – there’s definitely something to talk about. But we can al: Variety on the raclette grill is a must. With this in mind: to melt or not to melt is the question – in any case, savor the winter days until the Cheezy New Year.

KEEPING COOL THROUGH THE WINTER: GO SWIMMING WITH THE ICE DIPPERS

KEEPING COOL THROUGH THE WINTER: GO SWIMMING WITH THE ICE DIPPERS

What do the ancient Germanic tribes, Wimm Hoff aka The Iceman and our iconic German poet Johann Goethe have in common? They were and are all active advocates of ice bathing. And there are some of these enthusiasts in Berlin too: since 2017, a group has been meeting every Saturday (10h) from November through March to bathe together in the cold water. The collective “dip” into the cold water lasts several minutes. This may seem daring or even bizarre to some, but the tradition has a long established history and brings with it an extensive list of benefits. Just like cold showers, bathing in cold water is said to boost our immune system and is good for our skin and connective tissue. D The low temperatures trigger a kind of shock reaction in the body; adrenaline, endorphins and corticoids are released, which, incidentally, also has a positive effect on mood. So, a regular bath during the dark winter months could actually do all Berliners a lot of good… Taking part is easy: the locations are listed on the Ice Dippers website. If you want, you can also join their Telegram group via a link. Participation is free of charge. However, there is a donation jar, the proceeds of which go to Kältehilfe Berlin.

We started our self-experiment last week on the Regatterufer in Altstalau. Our group leader Jakob started by introducing us to the practice of the “Wim Hof” breathing technique. We then undressed straight away and went for a morning cold kick in the eight-degree Spree. Thanks to the breathing technique, the water was cold, but our bodies were relaxed and awake. At the end there was hot tea, a good contrast for those who wanted to stay for a quick chat or feedback. According to Jakob, around 600 people take part in the Saturday Ice Dippings each season. Refreshed, boosted and in a good mood, we then made our way home to the city center and can most definitely recommend this weekend activity.

A 5-YEAR JOURNEY OF SIPPING DELICACIES: INSIDE BERLIN’S VELVET AND ITS SEASONAL SPECTACLE — RECOMMENDED BY YOLANDA EVANS

A 5-YEAR JOURNEY OF SIPPING DELICACIES: INSIDE BERLIN’S VELVET AND ITS SEASONAL SPECTACLE — RECOMMENDED BY YOLANDA EVANS

At Velvet, foraged plants, herbs, and flowers have a long shelf-life. This cocktail bar serves complex, yet delicate libations made from seasonal vegetables, fruit, and herbs found around the German capital. Although not new to the bar scene, a close-knit team dedicated to the craft operates this 6-year-old dimly lit watering hole with 55 seats. Bartender Ruben Neideck, Sarah Swantje Fischer, Alice Von Vincent, Julia Raschia and Inan Öztürk meet every Tuesday for a lab day lasting three to four hours, in which they distill, ferment, and infuses among other thing for future cocktail-making. While some components, like syrups, are derived from fairly straightforward infusions, the staff also likes to centrifuge fruit juices in summer and use the clarified (and more stable) liquid to make cordials or shrubs to last through winter. And speaking of the menu, it’s a revolving door of seasonal cocktails with one new cocktail added each week so that the drink you loved one day might be gone on your next visit. So, stop by often so that you don’t miss out on any of the fabulous drinks the team might be cooking up in the lab.
