LEBERKÄSSEMMELN, EMMENTALER AND KAMINWUTZ — TRANSALPINE DELICACIES AT TERESE

LEBERKÄSSEMMELN, EMMENTALER AND KAMINWUTZ — TRANSALPINE DELICACIES AT TERESE

At noon, Prenzlauer Berg locals don’t just meet up for a flat white or a green quinoa bowl but also for a fresh roll with warm Leberkäs’ and sweet mustard at Terese, the quaint transalpine delicatessen in the Gleimviertel district. The friendly owner, who serves the rolls personally and gives detailed product advice and seems to have a personal connection and anecdote for each of them, is not called Terese but Martina. Terese is her grandmother, with whom Martina spent half her childhood on Lake Constance. Terese was an excellent cook, and so, true to the motto “the way to one’s heart is through the stomach,” she cooked for everyone and served an extra portion of comfort food on top. It makes sense that this woman is the namesake of the small store because, like Terese’s home, cozy is a very good way to describe the atmosphere here. The shelves are stocked with dried flower arrangements, natural wines, clay plates, fondue sets, tomato sugo, Bricelet cookies from Savoie, Kaminwurz, bacon, and Alpine cheese. But also enamelware, grissini, dried porcini mushrooms, gin, and chocolate.

Martina knows the producers of each product, small artisan businesses, and manufacturers, all from the Alpine region. It’s a perfect place to fill up your pantry with local or vacation treats or to give as a gift to a friend. But you don’t have to take anything home or give anything as a present; you can enjoy dumpling or pancake soup, raclette rolls with pickled organic vegetables, or cheese platters on the spot. According to Martina, however, Leberkäse is the absolute bestseller, which she gets delivered fresh every week from the Bavarian town of Trostberg. She discovered the best Leberkäse in the world at the local butcher’s at the weekly market there. How nice that Martina has spared no effort to make the logistical effort to bring this world’s best Leberkäse to Berlin.

OUVERTURE: HANDMADE JEWELRY MADE FROM RECYCLED METALS

OUVERTURE: HANDMADE JEWELRY MADE FROM RECYCLED METALS

The jewelry label Ouverture was born out of frustration and the search for high-quality, ethical jewelry in early 2020. In Berlin, the trained investment manager and business consultant Kris Ter-Ghazaryan found the ideal place to realize her creative vision: to establish an exquisite premium jewelry brand in Europe. The handmade collections bear the signature of Kris’ Armenian heritage in their traditional patterns, geometric shapes, and symbols. The current fall collection, “The Floating Diamond,” however, is a declaration of love to Berlin—giving a new spin-off to classic diamond jewelry. The diamonds seem to float, and each design tells a unique story about the creative energy of the city. Ouverture’s ethics and quality are not empty promises but characterize every aspect of production. The individual pieces and designs are created in small batches from recycled 14K gold and ethically and locally sourced diamonds and gemstones, most of which are only made to order to avoid overproduction and minimize unnecessary use of resources. This means that no so-called “mine gold” is used. In combination with Kris Ter-Ghazaryan’s memories of inherited pieces of jewelry, Ouverture is her very personal and, above all, elegant answer to the search for authenticity, individuality, and sustainability. Whether earrings, bracelets, rings, or necklaces, all pieces set a contemporary accent that skillfully creates a link between the current and the enduring.

FEEL, SEE, GIVE — PUT THE WHOLE WORLD OF FILM UNDER THE TREE WITH MUBI

FEEL, SEE, GIVE — PUT THE WHOLE WORLD OF FILM UNDER THE TREE WITH MUBI

As we all know, many things change as we get older. Two fundamental ones are the acceleration of time and the helplessness to answer the question: What do you actually want? While the wait for Christmas as a child felt like an eternity and the wish list was endless, this year the holidays have arrived far too quickly, and somehow you already have everything. For all those who still want to give presents to themselves and their loved ones, here is a recommendation that combines everything: romance and excitement, peace and comfort, pleasant creepiness, cathartic anger, and comforting sadness. There are a zillion different pictures, inspirations, and quotes — something for those who want to be alone or something to share with their loved ones. Bottomless fun and cultural education, full of journeys to the most distant worlds, all from the comfort of your own sofa. And something that definitely won’t be lying around unnecessarily. Sounds good? Works well too. We’re talking about Mubi, of course. Mubi, the cinema-on-demand service, curates classics and soon-to-be-classics on its streaming platform. The focus here is on great films. Highlights include Mathieu Kassovitz’s “La Haine,” Charlotte Wells’ award-winning drama “Aftersun,” Jim Jarmusch’s “Night on Earth,” and Ira Sach’s latest work “Passages.” These selections are constantly changing — you can never finish watching Mubi. At least that’s what my brother said when I gave him a subscription last year. Incidentally, it will simply be renewed again this year. How very practical!

THIS FRIDAY: JOIN SECRET SANTA AND SWAP YOUR COFFEE PACKAGE WITH FELLOW COFFEE FANS

Gift exchanges always bring back a bit of that school-time nostalgia. But with this swapping, at least you know you’ll end up with something you like and will use: coffee! Today is the last day for you to participate in the Secret Santa coffee event organized by Coffee Week Berlin (see also our article from two weeks ago). Quickly drop off a package of good coffee and receive another in return. It’s a pretty straightforward way to discover new flavors – and perhaps make new friends who share an interest in all things coffee and might want to grab a drink together sometime. So, whether you’re coming as a single for some mingling or for mingling with jingles: drinks and little goodies by Oatly and La Marzocco are covered. There’s also music – so you can’t lose, and you can gain maximum fresh beans and more knowledge – after all, the event takes place in the premises of the Communal Coffee community roastery.

FOR ALL THOSE WHO LIKE A HUMOROUS APPROACH TO THE FESTIVE SEASON: ILLUSTRATIVE STATIONERY FROM STUDIO TAMPOPO

FOR ALL THOSE WHO LIKE A HUMOROUS APPROACH TO THE FESTIVE SEASON: ILLUSTRATIVE STATIONERY FROM STUDIO TAMPOPO

You need one thing above all else for the upcoming holidays: a sense of humor. How else are you supposed to get through this crazy time between inflation and consumer mania, Berlin city life, and flashbacks at home, between “Last Christmas” and church bells? So, if you want to add a little wink to your festive greetings or New Year’s wishes, the greeting cards and postcards from Studio Tampopo might be just the thing for you. The stationery platform, run by Nozomi Horibe and Gregor Suchan, offers a hand-picked selection of postcards, greeting cards, posters, stickers, and calendars by various illustrators. Nozomi had met many talented and creative minds during her studies at the Weissensee School of Art. Studio Tampopo was founded in 2020 to stay connected with them and create the opportunity to show the diversity of their work without compromise and make it available for purchase. The webshop’s variety of styles now ranges from straightforward computer-drawn to softly brushed or quickly dashed. But they all have one thing in common: they are extra colorful and have wit. So, if you would like to send handwritten analog and humorous greetings this year or hand them over personally, take a look at the Studio Tampopo webshop. You still have plenty of time until the holidays… but even if the greetings don’t arrive until after the holidays, the recipients will certainly see it with humor—must be because of the cards!
