THREE COLORS, THREE NEWSLETTERS, THREE LOTS OF OPPORTUNITIES — WEEKLY EMAILS FROM WOLOHO

THREE COLORS, THREE NEWSLETTERS, THREE LOTS OF OPPORTUNITIES — WEEKLY EMAILS FROM WOLOHO

Wolo-what? You might need to read it a few times, but then you’ll remember it forever: Woloho stands for Wo-rk, Lo-ve and Ho-me – in other words, everything that’s essential and sometimes hard to find. And because some people have something to offer and others are on the lookout, the good old idea of an ad still works today – only that you can subscribe to it as a newsletter at Woloho. There are three emails in three colors: the blue one for job ads (Wo), the red one for leisure time (Lo) and the green one for apartment ads (Ho). The “love” one is not for personals, but rather things that people are passionate about and want to share with others. The idea was launched by Reza in 2012 and Woloho has since grown into a company with 52,000 subscribers in Berlin, Hamburg and Munich. The whole thing is free of charge, of course. In addition to the community idea, Reza, Rana and Natalie value diversity, fairness and authenticity – that’s why all ads come from the subscribers themselves and are carefully hand-curated by the three. If you are only looking for help with one of the three topics, you can of course subscribe to one (or two) of the newsletters. You may have noticed that Woloho and Cee Cee have quite a bit in common. Both are newsletters, yes, but more importantly, we both have community at the top of the agenda because without you, nothing works. And most of the time you can find our job ads in the work (blue) email. Subscribing is the new commitment – and the first step to a perfectly balanced lifestyle. P.S. At the end of the year the website and newsletter will be relaunched with a new design, more functionality and more cities!

BARRIO CUBANO — CUBAN BAR CULTURE COMES TO BERLIN

BARRIO CUBANO — CUBAN BAR CULTURE COMES TO BERLIN

Summer in Berlin: nothing is more memorable than those colorful, lively nights. Tasty food, catchy music, friends and one or two good drinks. The team at Eminente Rum are making sure we’ll be wanting for nothing with the “Barrio Cubano” event series. The brand is set to transform Berlin’s streets into Cuban neighborhoods, stirring up (or is it quenching?) our wanderlust with Daiquiris, Mojitos, Cuba Libres, Cuban street food and Latin American rhythms. The first sundowner is this Friday (30.06.2023) at Kink Berlin before continuing on the rooftop of Grace Bar (26.07.) and at Bonvivant (22. & 23.07). Schönhauser Allee, Kurfürstendamm and Goltzstraße are set to be immersed in the vibrant colors of the island nation – all you need to do is round up your friends. If you can’t make it to the events, you can also organize your own rum hunt with the City Map, where all participating bars and restaurants are listed. If you want to extend the summer beyond that, you can learn the skills you need to host your own party at cool hands-on masterclasses covering Cuban bar culture, the history of rum and, of course, Cuba’s iconic cocktails. For the key ingredient, selected shops are selling limited edition Eminente rum.

SO NICE THEY’VE DONE IT TWICE — GRILL GRILL IS BACK WITH FOOD, WINE & GOOD VIBES

SO NICE THEY’VE DONE IT TWICE — GRILL GRILL IS BACK WITH FOOD, WINE & GOOD VIBES

In the summer of 2022, Sören Zuppke and Clara Higham-Stoianova created the most legendary block parties of the year: The Autogrill Series. Five warm Sundays – each one unique. The delicious sandwiches didn’t cost the earth, and there was wine, DJs and good company. Now Grill Grill is back this Sunday (02.07.2023) welcoming great guests from the food, wine and music worlds. Ash Lee from Chungking Noodles and Sho Miyashita from Paris’s Haikara will provide mouthwatering, spicy sandwiches, accompanied by treasures and the latest vintages from the wine cellars of Justine Loiseau & Patrick BoujuAlanna Lagamba and Martin Wörner. Music will be curated by Refuge Worldwide. Unlike last year, this time there won’t be a series of events — everything will revolve around this one, big, hot day. The location is also new: say farewell to Wilhelm Hallen and hello to Marzahn — specifically the Laboratory for Engines and Aggregates, the perfect setting for this exuberant and special party. The good atmosphere, friendly hosts and uncomplicated food remain the same. So, don’t miss la Vita a Berlino this Sunday! And who knows, maybe we’ll insist on a third one afterwards – because all good things come in threes.

MEMORY BEACH & PERFORMANCE ELECTRICS: TWO OF BRANDENBURG’S CULTURAL HOTSPOTS LIGHT UP WITH ART AND PERFORMANCE

MEMORY BEACH & PERFORMANCE ELECTRICS: TWO OF BRANDENBURG’S CULTURAL HOTSPOTS LIGHT UP WITH ART AND PERFORMANCE

What do the E-Werk Luckenwalde and Künstlerhof Frohnau have in common? Both are venues for art and culture and both were influenced by the GDR’s post-war period and German reunification. In the north of Berlin, a 100-meter-wide and two-kilometer-long sandbar marks the landscape, and like every scar, it has its own history: it is the former “death zone” – a no man’s land. Now, however, it’s a place for artistic productions and discourse – Künstlerhof Frohnau – where you can rent studio space and participate in events, workshops and cultural programs. On Saturday (01.07.2023) Memory Beach, the contemporary festival for music and performance, will be taking place at the site. For one day, its courtyard will be transformed into a space of experience and movement for residents, participants and visitors. As part of the festival, this scarred strip of land will become a place of storytelling, tours and staging. The open air event is free of charge and starts in the early afternoon (can stay here until late in the evening). In the opposite direction, just 30 minutes south of Berlin, is E-Werk Luckenwalde, a coal-fired power plant opened in 1913 that was decommissioned after reunification.

In 2017, the art collective Performance Electrics led by Pablo Wendel brought the site back to life – powered not by electricity but by art. This weekend (01 & 02.07.2023), the site is hosting the first stage of the “Burn Out” symposium series, in which speakers will present their research results on topics related to human sustainability: Institutional Burnouts, Ecosystemic Infrastructure Change, and Hypocrisy in the Art World. They will address critical questions about what institutional growth can look like and where its limits lie. How can we dislodge environmental imperialism and take radical action locally and globally to rectify historical exploitation? Performances will be distributed throughout the program, creating non-didactic spaces for reflection and promoting art as an equally valuable form of knowledge transfer. Presentations will be in both German and English with live translation. Food and beverages will be available from Trafo and the E-Werk gardens will be freely accessible. Brandenburg has a lot to offer besides wheat fields, the Havel and gherkins: it is home to contemporary art that engages with world affairs both present and past. This weekend is more proof of this.

WORKING TOGETHER FROM NOW TO TOMORROW — THE HOLITOPIA SYMPOSIUM BY RE:FUTURE LAB

WORKING TOGETHER FROM NOW TO TOMORROW — THE HOLITOPIA SYMPOSIUM BY RE:FUTURE LAB

If there is one fact in our post-digital age that has become increasingly clear, it is this: everything is connected. Science and society, art and politics, language and image, research and discourse, and of course the future. Interdisciplinarity has become the norm. How can you make sense of it all? Where can you find information, inspiration and, in the best case, create something yourself? A good place to start would be the re:future lab. The Institute for Art and Future Design is a renowned and internationally active platform for change, located in Berlin’s Spreehallen. In September, re:future lab is hosting the immersive Holitopia Symposium, which combines art, science, technology and futurology to enable positive future scenarios. Over two days, you can learn from renowned and international minds from the fields of economics, architecture, philosophy, history, political science, urban studies, futurology and technology. There are performances and art, plus opportunities to engage in conversation with other change enthusiasts, systems thinkers and concept designers.

Speakers such as ethics and technology professor Dr. Joanna Bryson (“The incredible Algorithmaticity of Being”), architect Sigurd Larsen, futurologist Jan Berger (“Zero-Carbion Ecologies”), conceptual designer Johanna Seelemann and urbanist Ludwig Engel (“Matters of Co-Habitat in Vertical Sociotopes”) and of course founder and director of the festival Madeleine Schwinge (“Holitopia. Creative Intelligence in Epochal Shifts”) among others will lead through the two-chapter program, offering ad-hoc contributions. Additionally, there will be a performance by artist and composer Ayumi Paul (“All Ears Hear”). The typical divisions between stage and audience dissolve in discursive formats, interactive experiments and immersive environments. This creates space for unconventional and creative knowledge transfer, art as research, non-linear thought structures and new contacts, friendships and networks. The future is simultaneous, it starts now – and it affects us all.
