TRAIL WITH A SPRING MOOD: HIKING THROUGH ASPARAGUS FIELDS AND APPLE ORCHARDS TOWARDS GÖTZER BERG

TRAIL WITH A SPRING MOOD: HIKING THROUGH ASPARAGUS FIELDS AND APPLE ORCHARDS TOWARDS GÖTZER BERG

Hiking can be done all year round and every season brings something special with it. The first balmy day of Spring, when my partner Yulia kindly reminds me again to apply sunscreen to my face and shoulders, is a clear sign that our favorite hiking season is about to begin. We pack bath towels in our backpacks, jute bags with us for treasures we find along the way (like ground ivy, elderflowers or woodruff), and bug spray is also essential! We take the regional train from Berlin’s Ostkreuz directly to Brandenburg’s “Groß Kreutz”, the train takes about an hour and takes us right through Berlin and Potsdam, with all their sights and characteristic prefabricated buildings. Once we arrive at our destination, we head straight for field paths and pine groves in the direction of Deez. Taking a detour in the woods at a clearing, we enjoy our second breakfast in the mild sunshine. The important thing about hiking is to set little rituals and traditions: picnicking, bathing, picking mushrooms and picking a bouquet of flowers for the return trip home.

After eight kilometers we arrive at the “Deezer Erdlöcher”, where clay was quarried from 1850-1950 for the production of bricks and shipped to Berlin via the Havel River. Today, fishers enjoy their hobby in the ponds, but swans, herons and beavers’ burrows can also be discovered along the narrow paths between the many tranquil pools. Whoever thought Brandenburg was characterized by lakelands and forests is mistaken: Götzer Berg with its proud 108 meters of altitude, ranked 35th among the highest mountains in Brandenburg, awaits the ascent. I promise, you can do it! Another 27 meters of climbing allow a 360 degree panorama on the lookout tower standing there. And since we were talking about rituals, we have our next one up there, a little picnic and some more tea. Down the hill stretches an idyllic landscape of moss-covered forest floor, between pines and birch trees, which resembles a green flokati carpet. If you’ve had enough of nature and spring, you can board the train back to Berlin in neighboring Götz. Ambitious hikers can continue for another five kilometers towards Groß Kreutz in a wooded area parallel to the train tracks. The loop is about 20 kilometers and can be completed in five to six hours, depending on how frequently and extensively you take breaks. The route is very quiet despite its proximity to Potsdam, and with its diverse landscape it’s an absolute favorite in our personal hiking repertoire.

GUT ZU VÖGELN: THE BOOK (AND PODCAST) ABOUT LOVING BIRDS, FRIENDSHIP AND RESPECT FOR NATURE

GUT ZU VÖGELN: THE BOOK (AND PODCAST) ABOUT LOVING BIRDS, FRIENDSHIP AND RESPECT FOR NATURE

When the first rays of sunlight wake Berlin from hibernation, it’s not only the sparrows that sit on the rooftops whistling joyfully in anticipation of spring. What could be better than being awakened by the song of the returning birds? To this day, I’ve always been fond of bird migration, but in my urban world, swallows, sparrows, gulls, crows and turtle doves dominated. Until I discovered the podcast “Gut zu Vögeln” by two hobby birders Antonia Coenen and Philipp Juranek. In their podcast, they lovingly introduce species that have been with them and their friendship over the years: Swifts, wagtails, wrens, skylarks, chiffchaff – which are all species that live in our cities too. Their songs accompany us in our everyday lives but are often lost in the noise of sirens, trams and car horns. Not only are they all pretty songbirds, but each one has its own habitat and is an important part of our ecosystem that deserves protecting. Now the book “Vogel entdeckt – Herz verloren” (“Bird spotted – heart lost”) by the two has been published. Based on childhood memories and shared experiences, they introduce us to 14 different birds: their habitats, recognition characteristics and flight patterns: mallards in the park, blackbirds in their parents’ garden in Cologne, skylarks in Tempelhof, nightingales on Choriner Straße and cranes on Linumer Bruch. The book is a longing homage to the kings of the air and also stirs the bird-watcher in me.

POP-UPS EVERYWHERE — A SHOPPING TOUR FOR SECOND HAND PIECES FROM JEWELRY TO CERAMICS

POP-UPS EVERYWHERE — A SHOPPING TOUR FOR SECOND HAND PIECES FROM JEWELRY TO CERAMICS

Gradually, the last dark clouds bid farewell to Berlin, and by this weekend we’ll be greeted by summer temperatures – the city is waking up, and so are those who have been spending the cold Berlin winter indoors. There’s no official start to the pop-up season – but there’s one thing we can all agree on: it’s nicer to be out shopping with good weather and a drink in your hand! If you don’t have a trip to the Baltic Sea planned for the long weekend, you should go on a pop-up discovery tour in Berlin. As a starting point you should go to Prenzl-Mitte, where you won’t have to walk far to find several spots. At the new Kink Event Space you can expect minimalist secondhand staples for your closet by Freja, handmade ceramics in natural colors and delicate designs by Claï Studio, curated vintage pieces with a classic yet playful-feminine Scandinavian touch by Versa and jewelry in organic shapes by Berlin-based brand Oni Studio. All this in one of the most beautiful backyards Prenzlauer Berg has to offer. Not far from Pfefferberg and “in the middle of Mitte”, the Hamburg jewelry label Frellini will be visiting Atelier Oblique for another two weeks. Fine, unusual details, playful wearing options and understated classics – Carolin’s jewelry has that certain something, which is why after searching forever for the perfect pearl necklace, I had to have hers. Packed in a velvet pouch, it makes even a warm spring shopping day feel like Christmas.

MODERN DESIGNS IN RECYCLED MATERIALS — SWIMWEAR FROM OY SURF

MODERN DESIGNS IN RECYCLED MATERIALS — SWIMWEAR FROM OY SURF

As summer vacation approaches, swimsuits become the centerpiece of our beachwear wardrobe and stay with us all summer long. And to make sure they survive more than just one season, swim and activewear label Oy surf takes a sustainable approach with responsible production using recycled materials. The result is bikinis and one-piece suits with high cuts, bright colors and trendy patterns in comfortable, lightweight terry cloth. Production began in 2012 in Switzerland and Bali – and since 2020 Oy surf has been run by siblings Zelia and Dario Zadra. They are both passionate surfers since their youth and real OGs in the surf scene and culture, so they know exactly how swimwear has to withstand sun, sand and salt water – and should stay in place when the waves wipe you off your board. The fixed and crossed straps at the back of most bikini tops make sure that nothing slips and that there’s nothing tugging uncomfortably at the neck. The various styles of bottoms can be pulled tighter by the straps at the hips, depending on your preferences. For those among us who prefer to bathe in the sun than get in the water, the new styles of the Aesthetics 2023 collection “Desert Heat” feature, among other things, a timeless triangle design for an almost streak-free tan while relaxing on the beach. All pieces of their surf and yoga wear are made by a small family business in the north of Porto (Portugal) from recycled polyamide and polyester obtained from used plastic bottles and industrial waste. They are always on the lookout for innovative materials made from renewable and natural resources… so there’s nothing in the way of your next plunge into the cool blue.

AUSTRALIAN BRUNCH AND COFFEE CULTURE MEETS PARISIAN BISTRO STYLE — LUC

AUSTRALIAN BRUNCH AND COFFEE CULTURE MEETS PARISIAN BISTRO STYLE — LUC

Avo toast and a creamy flat white are solid staples in breakfast and brunch these days. Did you know that they originated in Australia? These roots are shared by the owner and namesake of Luc, a cafe in Prenzlauer Berg. Lucian is his name, and he moved from Sydney to Berlin in 2017, settling in Prenzlauer Berg where he opened Café Lac in September 2021. “Speciality coffee, pastries, food and music served by legends” is what the menu says. Of course, the Aussies are legendary not only for their beaches and flat whites, but also for their banter, which at this place comes included with your order. Also on point is the homemade food: How about a hearty open-faced pastrami sandwich with homemade chimichurri, butter-vegemite toast with poached eggs and mustard mayonnaise, toasted banana bread? Or the double-baked pistachio frangipane croissant accompanied by a vegan iced coffee or matcha served with Luc’s famous cold milk foam? All speciality coffees are made with filtered water and fine coffee blends from Sincerely, with whom Luc have created their own blend: Luc Blend of Legends – damn right. This fine food and drink is served in style: the cafe’s “Parisian chic” interior is decorated with marble tables and counters with glass cabinets. Oh, and if you like the music, you can follow Lucon Spotify for that French bistro feeling with your espresso at home.
