SCI-FI INSPIRED BOUQUETS, CROCHETING AND FILM NIGHTS — MARAIS FLOWER SHOP

SCI-FI INSPIRED BOUQUETS, CROCHETING AND FILM NIGHTS — MARAIS FLOWER SHOP

If you’re looking for a slightly fancier bouquet be sure to pay Marais a visit. And no, I don’t mean a trip to Paris’s 4th arrondissement, but to this flower store located right here in Berlin. Berit and Vlad opened their shop January 2022 and it is quite a place, with a unique sci-fi inspired concept. The pair draw inspiration from literature and movies, including the novel “Picnic by the Wayside” by Arkady and Boris Strugazki, which inspired the screenplay “Stalker” by Tarkovsky. In it, aliens leave traces in different zones of the world – objects that are mostly deadly and terrible, but sometimes of the highest usefulness. It is about wealth and happiness, misery and mistrust – and inexplicable phenomena. Berit and Vlad are fascinated by mystical terrain and post-apocalyptic plant worlds. The shop doesn’t just sell roses, carnations and lilies – Berlin has much more to offer thanks to its swampy origins!

You’ll find many regional plants and unusual flowers, some of which Berit and Vlad dry in the store. Even the paper used for packaging is reused here – the material comes from Kunst-Stoffe, which passes on leftover and used materials to artists at a reasonable price. Twigs and flowers taken from the pair’s own garden as well as those from friends can also be found at Marais. And in addition to unusual plants, flowers and branches, there are also colorful, crocheted flower bags to comfortably carry your new bouquet home. If you share their passion for science fiction movies, be sure to stop by one of the “Flowers in Cinema” movie nights to be surrounded by real – and mystical – plants and creatures! P.S. You can reserve your Mother’s Day bouquet conveniently by email and get it delivered to your home for free (last orders Friday evening).

OF ANIMALS AND GHOSTS: JOCHEN LEMPERT, FARAH AL QASIMI AND DAIDŌ MORIYAMA AT C/O

OF ANIMALS AND GHOSTS: JOCHEN LEMPERT, FARAH AL QASIMI AND DAIDŌ MORIYAMA AT C/O

Jochen Lempert never sees nature from a distance: whenever the Hamburg photographer captures butterflies, cranes, deer or flower meadows, he is always close up. In the photos of this trained biologist, subjective approach takes precedence over documentary anonymity: since the nineties, Lempert has been capturing the animal and plant world in sensitive portraits. They appear as grainy, sometimes delicate black and white photos on paper. The works can now be seen in Berlin, where the C/O Gallery invites you to the exhibition opening on Friday (12.05.2023). The immediacy with which Lempert depicts flora and fauna is evident not least in his experimental way of working. Whenever he has fireflies buzzing through his darkroom or frogs hopping across the photographic paper, the animals become direct collaborators and co-authors. Lempert, one feels, paints with light and looks with empathy at our environment, finding scenes that seem magical.

The supernatural also preoccupies media artist Farah Al Qasimi, who was born in 1991 and commutes between New York and Abu Dhabi. Inspired by horror films of the 1970s and 1980s, Al Qasimi’s first solo exhibition in Europe traces a poltergeist that haunts opulent estates. The result is a series of images that, like Al Qasimi herself, are not bound to a specific location, but pursue a question: how can something intangible be captured? The photo artist Daidō Moriyama is also no stranger to wandering between cultures. He had a decisive influence on Japanese street photography in the 1970s by pointing his camera at those not considered worthy of being photographed: gangsters and call girls who eked out a living on the fringes of Japanese society. Moriyama finds images that reveal the clash between tradition and Western hypercapitalism, telling fragile and fragmented stories of hope for a better future. All three photographers – who are on show at the C/O Gallery until September – have one thing in common: a curiosity about what lies before them and the unembellished way in which they depict it.

KEYLESS RIDES WITH SWISS STYLE AND LOTS OF POWER — E-BIKES FROM EGO MOVEMENT

KEYLESS RIDES WITH SWISS STYLE AND LOTS OF POWER — E-BIKES FROM EGO MOVEMENT

Are they a gamechanger or simply the new normal? We think it’s both! We’re talking about e-bikes, which are now an integral part of Berlin’s streetscape. EGO Movement, a Swiss company that specializes in stylish e-bikes, is now getting on board with this trend. So if you’re thinking about adding a bit of smartness and power to your cycling, this Friday (12.05.2023) is the best opportunity. That’s when the first EGO Movement flagship store opens in Berlin, inviting you to take a test ride while enjoying drinks and snacks. Whether it’s a lightweight electric bike, an elegant city ride or a practical cargo vehicle, the choices are varied. What you always get is elegant design and smart functions. The Cleopatra model, for instance, comes in bronze with a brown leather saddle and handlebars for a classic Dutch-style look. None of the models needs a lock, because they are opened by phone. To learn all about these two-wheeled wonders, stop by the EGO Movement shop and take a test ride around Gendarmenmarkt. In addition to bikes, there are accessories including helmets and baskets to check out and purchase. You might be getting from A to B in style while doing something for the environment sooner than you think: EGO will be giving away a bike to one very lucky attendee. For your chance to win: get yourself to the shop starting tomorrow (12.05)!

REMEMBERING, FEELING, MARVELLING — 60TH THEATERTREFFEN GRAPPLES WITH HUMANITY AND SOCIETY

REMEMBERING, FEELING, MARVELLING — 60TH THEATERTREFFEN GRAPPLES WITH HUMANITY AND SOCIETY

A Berlin institution since the 1960s, Theatertreffen is back at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele for its 60th edition (12–29.05.2023). As always, the program is politically and socially relevant, and this time it’s about transition and political processes, responsibility and change – both in society and in theater itself. What realms of possibility can theater open up? What can it set in motion? How can it inspire, educate, politicize and, in doing so, function as art? Once again, the festival comprises ten productions selected by a jury of German-language theater critics. Picking the best stage productions is no easy task: it’s best, perhaps, just to concentrate on content. How can theater help us remember? That’s the question at the heart of Der Bus nach Dachau. Staged by the collective De Warme Winkel and produced by the Schauspielhaus Bochum, the play is intended as a sort of 21st century memorial. How can we know the horrors of Nazi Germany when no one who experienced it survived? The play centers on the making of a film about the transportation of a concentration camp prisoner. A societal meta-medium piece that negotiates with meta-memories, the piece is clever, risky, moving, hard to stage and yet so successful.

Dramatist Sivan Ben Yishai’s plays are no less clever, risky and moving. With the Münchner Kammerspiele, Yishai is staging a production of Ibsen’s breathtaking thriller Nora alongside Gerhild Steinbuch and Ivna Žic. This story of escape from the prison-like marital home serves horror and violence. Next up, Berlin’s contribution to the festival is provocative, entertaining and extreme: Florentina Holzinger’s celebrated play Ophelia’s Got Talent. This spectacle is in a class of its own: if you’ve never seen a pool on stage, now’s your chance. If you have questions about the play, you can ask them at the audience discussion after the performance (14.05). From contemporary to classical: Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, staged by Antú Romero Nunes and his ensemble from the Basel Theatre, will be performed at the Hebbel am Ufer with a modern twist: Helena, Puck and Zettel are portrayed by teachers in a school auditorium. This theater stages itself. What could be better suited for this than the forefather of English language theater? If you’re not afraid of fomo, we recommend checking out the full program online. But be quick: tickets sell out rapidly.

OPULENT BLOSSOMS, HUNGRY BEES AND MICHELIN-STARRED VEGETABLES — PETZOW PALACE PLANT SALE

OPULENT BLOSSOMS, HUNGRY BEES AND MICHELIN-STARRED VEGETABLES — PETZOW PALACE PLANT SALE

May is the month when Berliners traditionally can no longer stand the withered remains of last summer’s balcony plants, the broken bicycle and the cigarette butts from the New Year’s Eve dinner. Now’s the time to tidy up, but if you’re tired of paying too much money for too little choice in the usual plant shop, the market at Petzow’s Drei Kæhne cafe is highly recommended for finding some new greenery. Petzow is a small village directly behind Potsdam and is a jewel of Prussian architecture, with a palace, gardens and plenty of designs from Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The gardens were restored after the war when the entrepreneur Klaus Kosakowski gradually bought up and joined parts of the original palace grounds before reconstructing them under the direction of two garden architects. It has since been open to the public for guided tours and really is a paradise. The heart of the site is the vegetable garden, which not only produces vegetable boxes for residents, but caters for the Drei Kaehne cafe, which occupies the old local school, and the Michelin star restaurant Alte Überfahrt in Werder.

The market this Sunday (14.05.2023) offers home-grown plants with something for every location: dry, wet, shady, bright or in between. For questions (do I need peaty soil or sand?) horticultural manager Jan Dirks is on hand to answer all your questions: What works where? How do I look after it? You’ll find everything, from shrubs and vegetables to opulent flowering plants and subtle greenery. There are annuals, perennials, winter hardy plants and varieties for allotments, terraces, bees, butterflies and the dinner plate. The smallest shoots start at 40 cents, and the selection includes old vegetable varieties, helping you support biodiversity and regional cultivation while (hopefully) growing something unusual for your dinner table. Oh, and if the thought of dinner is likely to make you hungry, you can stop off at the excellent cafe afterwards. Petzow: here we come.
