FRESH SEASONAL VEGETABLES FROM BRANDENBURG FIELDS: THE WEEKLY VEGETABLE BOX FROM PLANTAGE

FRESH SEASONAL VEGETABLES FROM BRANDENBURG FIELDS: THE WEEKLY VEGETABLE BOX FROM PLANTAGE

“Earthy” is how you might describe the vegetables from Plantage. It’s no surprise: the organic produce from this co-op comes straight from the soil to a delivery point near you. While supermarket greens, tubers and fruits always look clean and perfect, they’re not always the freshest. By contrast, Plantage’s seasonal veggies are grown on land just an hour from Berlin before being harvested and packed in veg boxes. I tried it for six weeks, and was thrilled to receive several varieties of potatoes, pointed cabbage, kale, purslane, beetroot (red, striped and yellow), radishes and, on occasion, apples and pears. Their earthy appearance translates into flavor: these greens taste like greens should. Everything is grown organically without animal fertilizers before being sent to stations in Berlin for pickup on Wednesdays and Thursdays (I collect mine at Pomeranze cafe in Neukölln).

The boxes contain enough veg for a three-person household (though if you get one for yourself you’ll at least be eating a lot of vegetables!) The other bonus is you’ll have a more varied diet, with the likes of pointed cabbage which might not otherwise make it onto the dinner table. In addition to all the individual benefits, the scheme lets you be part of something bigger: after a six-week test phase you can sign up for a year as a member of the collective. The more households join, the wider and cheaper the selection of produce becomes. You can even visit the farm yourself and help harvest the crops if you like (you can check out the field here).

THEATER AUFBAU KREUZBERG: DISCOVER A CHANGING KIEZ WITH AN AUDIO WALK AROUND MORITZPLATZ

THEATER AUFBAU KREUZBERG: DISCOVER A CHANGING KIEZ WITH AN AUDIO WALK AROUND MORITZPLATZ

Kreuzberg has changed a lot in recent years. So what – and crucially, who – has been left behind? With the urban space performance Die unmögliche Vertreibung des Herrn B. (“The Impossible Displacement of Mr. B”), Theater Aufbau Kreuzberg presents some of the changes in the neighborhood by following around the fictitious Mr. B, a man who resists his eviction from Kreuzberg. With their 2h30 audio journey, Mirjam Schmuck and Fabian Lettow from Kainkollektiv turn the streets around Moritzplatz into a setting for real questions on urban development, gentrification and the resistant spirit that defines SO36. Download the individual audio pieces and let yourself be guided through the district, starting from the Aufbau Haus and its creative residents, through the old churchyard of St. Jacobi and into the underground of yesteryear. You will hear from established Berliners as well as newcomers who call the neighborhood home. Without them, Kreuzberg would not be what it is today.

FOR A FLAVOR-FILLED DRY JANUARY — ALCOHOL-FREE SPIRITS FROM THE TASTE BAR

It’s the start of the year and for many of us that means time to atone for the excesses of the holiday season. But if Dry January feels like too big a sacrifice, the good news is it’s never been easier to go “nolo” (no or low-alcohol) thanks to the truly tasty alternatives now available. You can find some of the best on The Taste Bar, the online store dedicated to zero-percent drinks. Launched in 2021, the Berlin-based startup is all about turning your Dry January (or dry year?) from a burden into a joy. The site has a selection of premium alcohol-free spirits and elixirs that can be mixed into cocktails or enjoyed on their own. Looking for an alternative to classic bitters? Then the orange and rosemary aperitif from Wilfred’s – exclusive to The Taste Bar – is a solid pick. Can’t go without the juniper taste of gin? Check out the Laori gin alternative which is distilled in Berlin and packed with eight botanicals. Meanwhile, for a winter mood boost, the herby spirits from Three Spirit come in stimulating Social Elixir and relaxing Nightcap versions. If you do decide to go totally dry, the team have written a blog post on the myriad health benefits of reducing your alcohol consumption. We’ll leave the decision to you, but one thing’s for sure: you’ll come for the detox and stay for the taste…
