SECOND-HAND SHOPPING WITH A SOCIAL CONSCIENCE — GOOD XSAMPLE CHARITY FLEA MARKET

SECOND-HAND SHOPPING WITH A SOCIAL CONSCIENCE — GOOD XSAMPLE CHARITY FLEA MARKET

On the lookout for some christmas goodies and wouldn’t mind boosting your karma bank while you’re at it? Then come to a very special sample sale: the Good Xsample Charity Flea Market this Sunday (01.12.19). Here, all proceeds go straight to the homeless of Berlin. The concept is the collective brainchild of Highsnobietyand One Warm Winter, a local initiative for the homeless which aims to raise awareness amongst the young with projects such as Kiezmarke. Together they were able to win over brands, bloggers and influencers to donate their unused samples (Highsnobiety is giving out their very own as well). And of course there will be plenty of music, snacks and drinks. Also participating: Muschi KreuzbergKönig GalerieSuzie Grime and TISK, amongst others. A high-end flea market with food, drink and a good cause – see you on Sunday. (Text: Katie Burton / Photos: Julien Tell, Studio Hülle & Fülle, Michael Mann)

A SHINING SPECTACLE: LIGHT ART SPACE & REFIK ANADOL

A SHINING SPECTACLE: LIGHT ART SPACE & REFIK ANADOL

What happens when art merges with science, and light itself becomes the artist’s medium? Entering the giant turbine hall of Kraftwerk Berlin for Refik Anadol’sexhibition “Latent Being”, you see it revealed: an otherworldly audiovisual experience, astounding in its depth and scale. Presented as an immersive journey through four chapters, this is data-driven art, using machine intelligence as well as visitors’ movements to create ever changing digital “paintings”. This dazzling work marks the launch of the Light Art Space (LAS), a foundation dedicated to the connections between art, new technologies and science. Alongside the light show is LAS+, an interdisciplinary program featuring a multimedia show from Berlin-based duo Amnesia Scanner(30.11.2019, 21h) and AI-influenced sounds from composer, musician and sound artist Holly Herndon, performing together with long-time collaborator Mathew Dryhurst (06.12.2019, 21h). Together, the three works show you the cutting edge of man-machine artistry. START THE CELEBRATION SEASON WITH TABLES FOR 2

START THE CELEBRATION SEASON WITH TABLES FOR 2

Looking for an excuse to go out on a Wednesday night? Well we’ve got a party giving you a solid reason for a midweek spell on the dancefloor. The name: Tables for 2 – a dance music night that pairs two DJs who have never performed together to share the decks for the night. Now for the final edition of this innovative mix-up series, bookers have assembled the best line-up to date: Kowe Six from Moonbootica, who have blown away musical boundaries with their five albums and worldwide shows, consistently delivering thrilling, original electronic music. In the DJ booth he’ll be joined by Franziskus Sell, one half of Format:B, whose 15-year back catalog of successful releases has seen them forge their own signature genre: MotorFunk-Sound. These two class acts will be teaming up to take over Kreuzberg’s Night Embassy for a back-to-back set that will leave no musical genre unexplored. This is a rave that will power you through the rest of the week and the months beyond (Text: Andreea Dragos / Photos: Julia Schoierer for Jägermeister)

MAMA SHABZ: PAKISTANI FLAVORS SERVED WITH SPICE AND SPARKLE

MAMA SHABZ: PAKISTANI FLAVORS SERVED WITH SPICE AND SPARKLE

Proper Pakistani cuisine is a constant at Mama Shabz. Originally from London and with family roots in Kashmir and Punjab, owner Shabnam now serves her mum’s favorite dishes to hungry Berliners. Following pop-ups at Markthalle Neun, Bite Club and Fusion Festival, Mama Shabz has got a location of her own not far from Görli. There she serves dazzlingly authentic dishes in weekly rotation, like the spicy Shalgam (turnip) curry, the lamb and gourd Ghiya Ghosht and a classic Dhal. Pakora and samosas keep the vegetarians happy while for the carnivores there’s a special weekend treat in the form of a Nihari, the ultimate Pakistani breakfast stew. Once you’ve sampled all that, a must is the unorthodox but yummy grilled cheese Paratha, an indulgence we promise you won’t regret. The restaurant’s compact, colorful interior has appeal in bucketloads, with the tables handmade by Shabnam herself. Best of all, the place has a real community feel, with regulars coming in for a chat and a spicy pick-me-up. (Text: Katie Burton / Photos: Savannah van der Niet)

AWAKEN YOUR SENSES WITH UNIQUE FRAGRANCES — CANDLES & WORKSHOPS FROM LIT LAB BERLIN

AWAKEN YOUR SENSES WITH UNIQUE FRAGRANCES — CANDLES & WORKSHOPS FROM LIT LAB BERLIN

Did you know that smell is the strongest of our five senses? So strong that just a whiff of something special can bring us right back to moments from our past. That’s what Lit Lab founder Mallory Chen is working with. The Ohio native creates scented candles that are as individual as her customers, reconstructing aromas from treasured memories. In her fragrance library, you can smell your way through classic scents like jasmine and lavender, as well as more unusual options like birthday cake or driftwood, creating your own personal candle (with traditional top, heart and base notes) from soy wax. The highlight: they’re housed in stunning concrete holders handmade by Mallory herself and designed to be refilled again and again. Her creations have become popular, being sold at the likes of Merci in Paris. In the Berlin shop meanwhile you can have your own scented candle put together and choose from the most popular house mixes, while the workshops introduce you to Mallory’s olfactory world – nostalgia included.
