ENRICH YOUR BREAKFAST WITH HEMP HONEY AND POLLEN FROM BERLIN DELIGHTS

ENRICH YOUR BREAKFAST WITH HEMP HONEY AND POLLEN FROM BERLIN DELIGHTS

Produced from the seeds of the cannabis plant, hemp oil is truly one of nature’s marvels. Now with Berlin Delights packing this miracle substance into honey and bee pollen, it’s never been easier to get your daily dose of goodness. Similar to its stronger brother, CBD oil, hemp seed oil is said to offer many of the natural benefits of cannabis, but without the mind-altering THC. According to Berlin Delights founder Cäcilie Lotz, you can count on it to strengthen the immune system, lower cholesterol and provide brain- boosting fatty acids. Her hemp-infused Berlin honey is the perfect match for your morning muesli, while the bee pollen pellets will give tea, coffee, yoghurt and salads a nutrient boost and a deliciously delicate nutty taste. If you’re thinking of trying out hemp but don’t know where to start, these locally made and organic hemp helpers ought to be your first stop. (Text: Benji Haughton / Photos: Savanna van der Niet)

Berlin Delights honey and pollen pellets are available online.

WHITE LABEL PROJECT: THE POP-UP FOR DESIGNS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE

WHITE LABEL PROJECT: THE POP-UP FOR DESIGNS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Brands are always making claims about their sustainability, yet it never seems easy to find truly fairtrade and environmentally friendly products. White Label Project – initiated by Ann-Kathrin Zotz and Caroline Foerster – is about to change that. The pair, a former UN worker and a brand manager, have joined forces to create an online shopping platform for sustainable fashion and design. White Label collaborates with creatives from across the Global South, from Mexico to Ghana, to create a range of products that combine traditional craftsmanship with local knowhow and great attention to detail. Creatives like Pichulik, who design elegant jewellery handmade in Cape Town, and Manava, a Cambodian-based maker of pretty rattan baskets. Curious? Then check out White Label’s pop-up at Gemini Berlin this weekend (22.-24.11.) for a first glimpse at the collection. Shopping for pretty fashion and home accessories while supporting a really good cause? Count us in! (Text: Hanna Komornitzyk / Photos: White Label)

DEUTSCHE SPIRITUOSEN MANUFAKTUR: LOVINGLY DISTILLED SPIRITS IN UNEXPECTED FLAVORS

DEUTSCHE SPIRITUOSEN MANUFAKTUR: LOVINGLY DISTILLED SPIRITS IN UNEXPECTED FLAVORS

“Handmade in Berlin” is a phrase Deutsche Spirituosen Manufaktur takes seriously. Founded in May 2018 by Tim Müller and Konrad Horn, the Marzahn distillery is home to a team of pharmacists, master distillers and mixologists who select, refine and mix ingredients from all over to create more than 100 spirits. The extent of the aromas and flavors is extraordinary: from Mallorcan Verna Lemon to Palatine Fennel, DSM leave no stone unturned in their hunt for the best botanicals. This diversity means the spirits are great not just to drink, but to eat too. Sold in a 50ml spray bottle, the Bosnian porcino mushroom distillate will add a whole new layer of taste and aroma to fine cuisine. For more familiar tipples, opt for the in-house gin, vodka and Korn, which make perfect gifts and are now sold at DSM’s Mitte pop-up shop, open until mid-January 2020. BLACK APRON — AMERICAN BAKED GOODIES, MADE IN MITTE

BLACK APRON — AMERICAN BAKED GOODIES, MADE IN MITTE

“Let them eat cake,” goes the infamous quote. Unlike Marie Antoinette, the folks at Black Apron know exactly what the people need. A delightful cafe-cum-bakery for American-style baked treats, Black Apron originates from Hildesheim, the hometown of its owner Özlem Sögüt. After a detour via Codos Coffee in Hamburg, it landed in Berlin in June 2019, captivating with excellent freshly-made baked goods (think cheesecake and carrot cakes galore) and a simple, modern interior – not to mention the delicious matcha and turmeric lattes. You can even watch the bakers at work at the back of the shop, where the pros are always experimenting, hence the novel and constantly changing range of food. At the bar is where classics like the “Great Tart” can be found – a vegan and gluten-free tart with almonds, homemade coconut-turmeric paste, lemon and raspberry puree, with no sugar added. And for something more substantial, they now do a comfort-food brunch at the weekend. We’re lining up already. (Text: Katie Burton / Photos: Johanna Rademacher-Flesland)

THE POETRY OF PRINT: HANSJÖRG MAYER AT THE KUNSTBIBLIOTHEK

THE POETRY OF PRINT: HANSJÖRG MAYER AT THE KUNSTBIBLIOTHEK

The young Hansjörg Mayer spent much of his time at his family’s print shop in Stuttgart. Fascinated with the misprints and the random byproducts of printing, Mayer began to collect things that would otherwise have ended up in the bin. His early enthusiasm was later translated into an experimental aesthetic that materialized in his “Druckprozessbildern” – printed typographic pictures. Both his typographic works and his seminal publishing house made him one of the most important protagonists of Concrete Poetry and 1960s art. Many of the most creative artist books passed through his hands, including from the likes of Richard Hamilton, Dorothy Iannone and John Latham. In the universal anti-artist Dieter Roth, Mayer found a partner with whom he consistently explored the boundaries of the printable. In addition early work “The First Alphabet”, the exhibition at the Kunstbibliothek features portfolios, film, records and books that explore Mayer’s printed universe.
