CLOUD7: THE ONLINE BOUTIQUE FOR THE FINEST IN DOG ACCESSORIES

CLOUD7: THE ONLINE BOUTIQUE FOR THE FINEST IN DOG ACCESSORIES

Looking to get your dog ready for the cold months ahead? Well we’ve found the perfect canine winter warmer: Cloud7‘s chic Alaska dog coat, featuring extra-warm down made from recycled plastic bottles. Our office dog Zula has tried and tested it and can confirm its coziness. Founded in 2010 by fashion designer Petra Jungebluth, Cloud7 isn’t your average online pet shop. Their range of collars, beds, leads and coats are designed for the most discerning of dogs, with stylish, minimalist designs and the best in high quality materials. Jungebluth believes strongly in sustainable and fair trade production, designing the range in her own studio and working in collaboration with specialized textile, leather and ceramic manufacturers (all the collars are handmade in Italy). The use of untreated and organic raw materials where possible is good news for both your dog and the environment. And with Christmas around the corner, it’s a great time to pamper your pooch – if he or she has been good this year, that is. (Text: Benji Haughton / Photos: Savannah van der Niet)

BETTINA POUSTTCHI AT THE BERLINISCHE GALERIE: BLENDING SCULPTURE, PHOTOGRAPHY AND ARCHITECTURE

BETTINA POUSTTCHI AT THE BERLINISCHE GALERIE: BLENDING SCULPTURE, PHOTOGRAPHY AND ARCHITECTURE

Twisted, entangled guard rails, bicycle stands and barricades – Bettina Pousttchi’s installations seem both familiar and fragile. These anthropomorphic sculptures, stripped of their original functions and displayed colorfully in museums, distort conceptions of freedom and security in public spaces. The Berlin-based artist works fluidly between sculpture, photography and architecture, and her works are often site-specific and engage with their surroundings. For the solo exhibition “In Recent Years” at the Berlinische Galerie, the museum itself has become an exhibit: like an ornamental net, a giant photo installation stretches across the entire glass façade of the building, evoking elements of Middle Eastern architecture. Again and again, Pousttchi succeeds, both playfully and emotionally, in interweaving supposed contrasts – such as national and social identities – through subtle interventions. A successful show that offers a conciliatory perspective on urban architecture. (Text: Hanna Komornitzyk / Photos: Berlinische Galerie, Jens Ziehe, Noshe)

UPPERS & DOWNERS BERLIN: THE FESTIVAL WHERE CRAFT BEERS MEET ARTISAN COFFEES

UPPERS & DOWNERS BERLIN: THE FESTIVAL WHERE CRAFT BEERS MEET ARTISAN COFFEES

If you’re a beer lover and a coffee connoisseur, why not combine the two at Uppers & Downers Berlin, the festival bringing cutting-edge European beer brewers and coffee roasters together for some wild and wacky hybrids. Normally we’d recommend not mixing your uppers and downers, but if you get the mix right, great things can happen. The festival has stands offering a multitude of brews to taste, including the likes of the “Snoutjuice” coffee stout (11% abv!) from Sweden’s Brewski and the malty imperial coffee stout from Slovenian masters Pivovarna Pelicon. And for those wanting to keep the two brews strictly separate, there’s always nitro coffees and quirky ales from event hosts Motel Beer & Coffee. Food can be had from Lars Exit and entry includes a bottomless tasting glass, so expect to be energized and soothed in equal measure. (Text: Benji Haughton / Photos: Cliff Lucas, Good Beer Hunting)

ROAD TRIPPING — A SURREAL CINEMATIC JOURNEY THROUGH FILM HISTORY

ROAD TRIPPING — A SURREAL CINEMATIC JOURNEY THROUGH FILM HISTORY

Since it’s halloween, here’s a tip fit for the spookiest night of the year: The beloved cult film club, the Berlin Film Society, is screening Oliver Stone’s classic “Natural Born Killers”, starring Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis as a ruthless pair on the run in the USA. But that’s not the only feature: the screening is a part of a series entitled “Road Tripping: The Surreal Highway in Cinema”, dedicated to the most bizarre road trips in cinematic history, including flicks like David Lynch’s “Lost Highway” and Leo Carax’s “Holy Motors”. Sometimes funny, sometimes psychedelic, sometimes disturbing – this is a film selection sure to thrill any audience. Tickets are available here. O-SLOW: JAPANESE AND LEBANESE CUISINES COMBINE FOR A TRULY MULTICULTURAL MENU

O-SLOW: JAPANESE AND LEBANESE CUISINES COMBINE FOR A TRULY MULTICULTURAL MENU

I’m such a fan of O-slow that I first wanted to keep it all to myself as my ultimate insider restaurant tip. Opened by Mami, Wahid and Wissam in 2018, O-slow is a place full of character and quirky details, where Japanese and Lebanese cuisine are brought together with complete mastery. The best and most special thing about this place is you don’t have have to make endless choices: there is a single, daily menu to choose from. The vegetarian (and vegan-friendly) food reveals a culinary dialogue between the Far East and the Middle East, all conceived and prepared by chef Mami with love. On our visit, we had a coriander–potato salad, brown rice with marinated tofu and edamame, tomato-wakame-miso soup, homemade lemonade and hōjicha (roasted green tea), and some fluffy sfouf (lebanese semolina cake) to finish with. Spending the evening at O-slow with your favorite people, you’re guaranteed to leave relaxed, content and with an unmistakable smile on your face. (Text: Lisa Strube / Photos: Savannah van der Niet)
