CC CALENDAR TIPS TO KICK OFF SEPTEMBER: WATER, WINE & WORLD DESIGNS

CC CALENDAR TIPS TO KICK OFF SEPTEMBER: WATER, WINE & WORLD DESIGNS

We’re heading out of town and back, with our CC Calendar tips spanning from Uckermark to Mitte, from screen printing to urban development. Kicking things off is the Um Festival (06.–07.09.2025) in Uckermark, dedicating its ninth edition to the theme water. Between Fergitz, Pinnow, and Wrietzensee, nature becomes a stage for performances, sculptures, concerts, readings, and DJ sets — featuring Annett Gröschner, Thomas Fehlmann, the UmTon Choir, and Gudrun Gut, among others. It will be a weekend of art, music, and literature that utilizes local infrastructure such as greenhouses, fire stations, and open fields. If you’re traveling from Berlin, it’s worth leaving early. Back in the city, the Frizzante Festival(05.–07.09.2025) celebrates its premiere on the grounds of St. Elisabeth Church in Mitte — curated by tipBerlin and Viani. Over 50 producers from all over Italy, from Sardinia to South Tyrol, bring artisan foods and wines to taste, discuss, and buy. The event is accompanied by talks on olive oil, Lambrusco, and food design, as well as music from DJ Andrea and the tenor duo Luca e Rapha. The aperitivo on Friday evening is free, but tickets are required on Saturday and Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Cakes & Zines Festival (06.09.2025) invites you to browse, swap, and read at the Dragonerareal. Cosmo Bauer will be there to present his new poster and his TS Sm*t Zine. On Sunday (07.09.2025), it’s all about solidarity with live screen printing, bring your own textiles and have them printed on-site in exchange for a donation. Proceeds will go to Aria’s fundraiser to finance gender reassignment surgery. Starting on Tuesday (09.09.2025), Andreas Murkudis will host an exhibition by French fashion brand Carven. Not only will the new FW25 Pre-Collection be on display, but also works by three female artists: sculptural objects by Kalou Dubus, furniture by Atelier Leymarie, and a sustainable textile installation by Natural Material Studio. To close the week, Architangle invites you to a book presentation on Wednesday (11.09.2025) entitled Saudi Modern: Jeddah in Transition 1938–1964. Published by the Saudi architectural firm Bricklab, the volume documents the transformation of the port city Jeddah after the discovery of oil, between the push for modernization and the loss of architectural heritage. The event opens up new perspectives on urban development in global contexts. Days between land and city, design and community, and an eye for the big picture in the details.

NEXT STOP: GASTHOF ZUR EISENBAHN — SLOWING DOWN IN THE UCKERMARK

NEXT STOP: GASTHOF ZUR EISENBAHN — SLOWING DOWN IN THE UCKERMARK

If you find yourself driving down a long road and at the very end a charming inn is waiting for you, you’ve come to the right place. Just make sure to double-check your coordinates – after all, Brandenburg has more than a few places with “Eisenbahn” in their name. But this one, Gasthof Zur Eisenbahn in Temmen-Ringenwalde, is the perfect destination when you’re hungry and craving downtime. The spot – in the hands of host Martin – truly is the full package: tavern, beer garden, and guesthouse. Inside, you’ll find a cozy room with warm wooden floors and a big tiled stove. Candles flicker on the wooden tables. On mild evenings, sit on the terrace: towering trees cast wide shadows, and a small chalkboard leaning against the wall lists a small selection of dishes. Equally small is the team, with often just one person running both kitchen and service. But that’s part of the charm: there’s no need to rush here (at least not for the guests). Good things take time.

Which means you get a moment to pause, exhale, and sip on something refreshing – perhaps a glass of house-made kombucha or vermouth. The food follows a clear, no-fuss philosophy. There are timeless classics that, when made with good ingredients, taste heavenly – like boiled potatoes with quark and linseed oil. Or, as on our visit, smoked trout with lentils – aromatic, earthy, and beautifully straightforward. The kitchen also leans Mediterranean with vegetarian options like cheese polenta or baked eggplant. And then there’s pizza – the ultimate crowd-pleaser. A thoughtful selection of wines by the glass rounds out the menu – just right for a late summer evening after a day at the lake. And if you want the relaxation to last a little longer: the old stable building has guest rooms, too. On our visit, they were fully booked, so no peek inside this time. But maybe next time – stretching the Uckermark escape into an overnight stay sounds like the perfect way to extend the calm.

TAKE A VACATION IN WERDER — ON THE ISLAND OR THE MAINLAND, QUIET DAYS OR LONG WEEKENDS

TAKE A VACATION IN WERDER — ON THE ISLAND OR THE MAINLAND, QUIET DAYS OR LONG WEEKENDS

It’s a Friday afternoon, I close my laptop — everything screams weekend. We head straight to Werder, the young architecture studio undjurekbrüggen‘s holiday project. Behind it are Swiss architects Aimeè Michelfelder and Jurek Brüggen, who, after studying at ETH Zurich, returned to Werder, the place where Jurek grew up. And you can feel it immediately: they know every corner, every hidden gem in the region, and (almost) everyone around. Their project has been carefully restored — sustainable, detail-oriented, ecological, and adapted to the local setting. Almost everyone we meet is somehow involved: childhood football friends helped with demolition and gardening, flowers in the apartments come from Von Hand in Werder, and the photographs on the walls are by Anne SchwalbeOrte is not just a holiday spot, it’s a whole world. Two properties, two shores on the Havel, eight unique apartments, all harmoniously integrated into the landscape, and only 600 meters apart. Each light-filled apartment is individually designed and comfortably furnished. You’re constantly in touch with the surrounding nature, in tune with the weather and the seasons.

Am Mühlenberg is located on the island of Werder. Here, a spacious waterfront property with meadows and a listed ensemble of old and new buildings is nestled among orchards and ancient oaks. A private vineyard with 800 vines and a belvedere is my personal highlight. At the foot of the vineyard stands Hain, a striking storage and production pavilion made almost entirely of natural, recycled, and local materials for the organic wine Jurek’s family has been producing for years. Past the pavilion, a narrow jetty leads through dense riverside vegetation directly into the Havel, where a pair of swans swim curiously towards us. It feels like a movie scene! From there, we swim to the opposite shore. The second property, Im Scheuhornweg, is a hidden garden with old trees on the mainland, with a view back onto the island. A simple white Bauhaus-style house (designed by architect Peter Bartning) is our home for the weekend. We spend the day on the large wooden jetty — a ladder leads straight into the water. Swimming, reading, relaxing, doing nothing. We watch the water sparkle and instantly feel at home and deeply refreshed.

STEP OUTSIDE: THREE TIPS FOR ART AROUND BERLIN

STEP OUTSIDE: THREE TIPS FOR ART AROUND BERLIN

It’s the final week of Art Biesenthal. And, as I reluctantly notice while pulling transitional jackets from the closet, one of the final weeks of summer. Before autumn creeps up on us and we forget to savor these last warm days, it’s time to head out once more: into nature, into the countryside. Out to see art. Here are a few spots just outside Berlin and what they have to offer. If you haven’t made it yet, this weekend is your last chance to catch the final days of Art Biesenthal. Some Degree of Friction enters its closing weekend on Saturday and Sunday (30–31.08.2025). The show features works by Anne Imhof, Beatriz Morales, Precious Okoyomon, and Rosa Barba, among others. The closing is accompanied by a music program curated by Radiance, with acts such as Delta Rain, Viktor Sloth, Vlada, and more. There’s also a special finissage dinner hosted by Remi: a communal meal in the field, surrounded by trees and art. Burrata, peach, chamomile and almond, meringue, and more. Pro tip: don’t forget mosquito spray. From there, continue rurally in Schwante, where the Sculpture Park has expanded its exhibition this year with new works. Artists such as Esra Gülmen and Christian Jankowski join the line-up alongside Jorinde Voigt, Jeewi Lee, Carsten Nicolai, Erwin Wurm, and Hans Arp. At the heart of this year’s exhibition is “self-reflection”. Not the lightest theme, but easier to digest when taken in amidst the greenery.

If you’ve had your fill of art, take a break at the restaurant, browse the farm shop, or check out the Wagyu cattle grazing in the Schlossgut Schwante meadows. There’s also art in Potsdam, where Villa Schöningen adds music to its current program. On Saturday (30.08.), there will be Jazz in the park. In the villa’s garden, life always feels good, and music only makes it better. Inside, catch the exhibition Fabric. Textile and the Female Nude II, curated by none other than Pola van den Hövel, on view through next week. Not in the mood for music or nudes? On the same day, a guided historical tour of the building and gardens is also an option. So get on the train and out of Berlin. And bid farewell to summer with art before autumn fully catches up with us.

LIFE BEYOND SCREENS — HEINEKEN AFTERWORK EVENT AT PRINCE CHARLES INSPIRES IN-PERSON CONNECTIONS

LIFE BEYOND SCREENS — HEINEKEN AFTERWORK EVENT AT PRINCE CHARLES INSPIRES IN-PERSON CONNECTIONS

The average young person spends almost six hours a day on their smartphone – at least according to a recent study commissioned by brewing brand Heineken. More and more of us are looking to reclaim this time for face-to-face interactions – something Heineken is hoping to address with an afterwork event at Prince Charles next Thursday (04.09.2025). The invite-only evening launches the brand’s “Social off Socials” campaign and includes discussions on digital wellness as well as arcade games, gourmet burgers and cocktails. Afterwards, guests are invited to let loose on Prince Charles’s iconic pool dancefloor. The idea of the initiative is to encourage real-world interactions, whether it’s game nights with friends or barbecues in the park. With Cee Cee, you will have the chance to win a ticket and one of the limited-edition Heineken x Bodega “Boring Phones” – sleek Y2K-style devices that focus on calls and texts rather than scrolling and social media. If you are looking for IRL connection, a dumb phone like this might just be a smart choice…
