A LITTLE PUNK, A LITTLE POETRY: HELGA PARIS’S PERSPECTIVE OF THE GDR AT FOTOGRAFISKA

A LITTLE PUNK, A LITTLE POETRY: HELGA PARIS’S PERSPECTIVE OF THE GDR AT FOTOGRAFISKA

People who are fully with themselves — sitting at bus stops, gazing absentmindedly into the distance, or rushing from one appointment to the next, with no time to fix their hair — these were Helga Paris’s favorite subjects. The unadorned, honest encounters that the self-taught photographer captured throughout her life in black-and-white snapshots. Her unposed series with titles like Berliner Jugendliche, Mein Alex, and Hellersdorf still tell of a divided Germany, which she began portraying almost incidentally in the 1980s. The exhibition für uns at Fotografiska, honoring the great East German photographer who passed away in 2024, proves that her images of neighbors, garbage collectors, bakers, waitresses, and retirement home residents remain timeless.

Paris always sought the everyday and connection in her subjects. Looking into the faces of East Berlin punks or the tired eyes of waitresses, you might imagine finding the same gazes today in Kreuzberg or Wedding. She never polished rough edges. She found beauty in crumbling façades. From her apartment in Prenzlauer Berg, she encountered the world around her with a sincere tenderness she extended to everyone without precondition. Her portraits are steeped in questions of origin and class, but Paris approached them neither didactically nor voyeuristically. In front of her camera, everyone stood on equal footing, whether she was photographing pub owners or women in work smocks. And that, so powerfully conveyed in the sensitively curated exhibition by former Nationalgalerie director Udo Kittelmann at Fotografiska, is Helga Paris’s enduring legacy: she saw the human first. She was interested in the person in front of her. In us.

CELEBRATING, REMEMBERING, SUPPORTING — CC’S CALENDAR TIPS

CELEBRATING, REMEMBERING, SUPPORTING — CC’S CALENDAR TIPS

August is waving goodbye, and with the end of summer, Berlin is slowly filling up again. Before next week’s art events take over the city, the coming days invite you to celebrate, indulge, and take part — from parties to solidarity dinners, from high tea to quiz nights. On Saturday (30.08.2025), the evening kicks off with the opening of Flōat Studio in Kreuzberg. The new space combines Pilates and yoga classes while also creating a place for community gatherings of all kinds — from after-work get-togethers to studio dinners. Later that night, Toy Tonics is hosting their Summer Jam at Aeden: four dance floors, 25 DJs, 17 hours of partying — grab tickets here. On Thursday (04.09.), einBuch.haus opens its doors for Quotes about Books from Books about Books by Norwegian artist Sveinn Fannar Jóhannsson. The exhibition combines artist book, reading room, and archive: 148 quotes from publications of the past five decades are brought together, complemented by readings and installations that reconsider the book as a political, aesthetic, and participatory object. The following Sunday (08.09.), Bistro Spumante is hosting a solidarity dinner for Afghanistan. Expect vegetarian and meat dumplings, and ice cream for dessert. All proceeds go directly to people affected by deportations. And one more date to mark down: Thursday (19.09.), Bag of Weasels Quiz Night at Desi Diner. Gather four to five friends, form a team, and quiz for prizes. Good food, good drinks, good cause: proceeds will support the Shwaikh family in Gaza. A small reminder of just how much is possible in this city — together and for each other.

And how could we forget the Launch Party, kicking off at 19:30 on Wednesday (03.09.)! TRANSONIC, Ninon x Victor, and Pauric Freeman will present three future-forward audiovisual performances at Studio111 – get your ticket here. CROISSANT SESSION NO. 03 — A MORNING FOR COMMUNITY, MUSIC & COFFEE AT CAFÉ BRAVO

CROISSANT SESSION NO. 03 — A MORNING FOR COMMUNITY, MUSIC & COFFEE AT CAFÉ BRAVO

How do you turn a Saturday morning into something special? You do it together. With Cee Cee’s own Croissant Sessions, we’re creating a new kind of morning ritual, one that brings people together IRL around music, good coffee, and a shared vibe. After two sunny sessions in Neukölln and Mitte, we’re back in the heart of Mitte for Croissant Session No. 03, and this one’s something special. We’ve teamed up with KW Institute for Contemporary ArtSwim GoodCafé Bravo, and Coffee Week Berlin to turn the iconic KW courtyard into a daytime party space. Art, music, croissants, and culture — all in one of Berlin’s most unique locations. This session’s sound will be provided by DJs Stimulus, DJ Jenesis, and Trigger T from Swim Good, a Berlin-based collective with a finely tuned ear for soulful, danceable grooves. Think hip-hop, edits, R&B, house, and everything in between. And it gets even better. Their sets will be recorded live for Swim Good Radio, so you can relive the morning’s energy later on Apple Music. And because we believe in starting the weekend right, there’ll be free mini croissants from The Sanctuary for the early birds (first come, first served), and Café Bravo will be serving coffee classics as well as a few boozy twists.

SUMMER SHELVES, LASTING MEMORIES — RELIVE HOLIDAYS WITH TYLKO’S CUSTOM PIECES

SUMMER SHELVES, LASTING MEMORIES — RELIVE HOLIDAYS WITH TYLKO’S CUSTOM PIECES

Whether it’s postcards from Italy, treasures found in nature, or ticket stubs you’ve carefully kept, the most beautiful souvenirs on our sideboards transport us back to summer holidays. (And they’re displayed best on custom-made shelves from Tylko.) Even in autumn, they tell stories of night walks along the beach or daily espressos at a local café. This August, instead of packing your bags, the Polish furniture brand invites you to take a vacation at home. Their colorful shelves and sideboards — where function meets design — turn your space into a place where the feeling of summer lingers long after your last trip. And if you want to get even more comfortable, Tylko’s new Smooth Sofas might be just the thing: more relaxing than any beach lounger and just as quick to put you into holiday mode. With so many modular and customizable options, it’s not an easy decision. You can find plenty of inspiration online, such as Tina Bobbe’s home story, showcasing her colorful coffee machines on her Tylko sideboard. As part of the Summer Sale, our readers can enjoy the biggest discount of the year. If that’s not a reason to rethink your space and bring a bit of summer inside, we don’t know what is.
