POP IN FOR A COFFEE OR AN AFTERNOON PINT: MARKTPLATZ WALDSCHÄNKE FOR A DAY TRIP

POP IN FOR A COFFEE OR AN AFTERNOON PINT: MARKTPLATZ WALDSCHÄNKE FOR A DAY TRIP

As you pass through Teltow and step off the bus at Stansdorf, the first thing you’ll see is a two-story building perched on the corner. And the first thing you’ll smell is the freshness of the lush green park opposite. Marktplatz Waldschänke is a heritage site, built in the late 1910s, with cottage character. It reminds me of an enchanted gingerbread house. You can imagine what it means to the local community, nothing short of an icon — beloved and cherished. More than just the building itself, it stands surrounded by a beer garden, a large dining courtyard at the cafe, a spot to chill by the fire or make woodfired pizza, swings to swing on, an ice-cream bar, or some freshly baked bread from Domberger Brot-Werk. The bread station is an ex-military trailer with a built-in wood fire oven. There are so many layers and elements to this space, nooks and crannies to explore, you’d need at least half a day to take it all in.

My favorite component is the barn house, replenished and revamped into a beautiful dining space to sit and enjoy coffee and cake. Our favorite is the vegan carrot cake and the lemon cheesecake. Alternatively, you can reserve it for a private function. The furniture has either been built from scraps by Adrian Schefer and his team or donated by the community. There’s a huge sense of nostalgia — finding the joy in how nothing matches, and pieces had a whole other life before arriving here. The entire space is designed to bring people together while supporting the local community. A lot of love and contribution has gone into Walderschänke, whether it be from material donations, labour efforts, or simply sharing the space with other business owners. Adrian, with his deep knowledge of Waldschänke’s history, years of experience opening and running businesses in Berlin, and a passion for up-cycling, has been slowly and carefully reviving the space. There’s still plenty to do, so an “all hands on deck” spirit is welcome. Visitors can stop by Thursday through Sunday or book for private events.

MORE THAN FORM & FUNCTION — THE NEW PODCAST SEASON ABOUT BAUHAUS

MORE THAN FORM & FUNCTION — THE NEW PODCAST SEASON ABOUT BAUHAUS

Everyone knows Bauhaus: cradle of modernism, mother of big names, source of endless stories. And yet there is still more to discover. About Bauhaus, the podcast from the Bauhaus Archive / Museum of Design, returns with a new season and gets up close and personal. The first three episodes explore three major themes: love, technology, and society. A new perspective on the school that continues to inspire us is released every third Thursday of the month. Art historian Adriana Kapsreiter, together with changing guests from the worlds of art, culture, and science, transforms Bauhaus into a sounding board for big questions. The first episode focuses on love. Guests include Danielle de Picciotto, co-founder of the Love Parade, and musician Alexander Hacke, formerly of Einstürzende Neubauten. Together, they discuss passion in art and the famous couples of the Bauhaus. Episode two is dedicated to technology: What is a tool, what is a machine, and how does innovation transform the artistic process? The third episode, perhaps the most pressing, turns to society. Guest Inken Baller, one of Berlin’s most influential architects, reflects on her work in social housing construction and broader visions for living together. And the journey continues, from the social ideals of the New Building movement to playful experiments and connections with nature. Each episode opens a new door to the questions that preoccupied the Bauhaus 100 years ago and that still challenge us today. Fortunately, much has changed since then.

WHAT DOES SUMMER SOUND LIKE? THE NEUE NATIONALGALERIE INVITES YOU TO SOUNDSCAPES

WHAT DOES SUMMER SOUND LIKE? THE NEUE NATIONALGALERIE INVITES YOU TO SOUNDSCAPES

Summer is back, along with everything that makes it Berlin’s best season: trips to the outdoor pool during your lunch break, ice cream at midnight, open-air concerts. From 27.–30.08.2025, the Neue Nationalgalerie provides the perfect backdrop for an open-air sound experience. As part of the Soundscapes in the Garden event series, live concerts will take place across three evenings, curated by Gregor Quack in collaboration with Tessa Nijdam and the CTM Festival. London-based electronic artist Loraine James will kick things off on Wednesday (27.08.) with dancer and musician Tom Heyes (better known as Blackhaine). A special highlight will be the performance by techno romantic Pantha du Prince on Friday(29.08.). In keeping with the setting, he will present his album Garden Gaia, exploring the relationship between humans and nature.

Limpe Fuchs, renowned for her improvised sound since the 1970s, will also perform that evening. She builds her instruments to create compositions that have never been heard before. Fujiko Nakaya’s fog sculpture (see our article about it here) will take center stage in the garden of the Neue Nationalgalerie during the Long Night of Museums on Saturday (30.08.). As gently and swirlingly as her clouds of mist drift through the garden, music will unfold in the air. On the hour, when the fog rises, sound installations will play in parallel. While pianist Ryuichi Sakamoto composed pieces especially for Nakaya shortly before her death, Alva Noto (the pseudonym of Carsten Nicolai) and guitarist Stephen O’Malley rework them. Summer hasn’t sounded this creative in a long time!

KAFFEEKREIS — MOLDOVA ON MÖCKERNSTRASSE

KAFFEEKREIS — MOLDOVA ON MÖCKERNSTRASSE

Berlin has almost everything when it comes to cuisine, but Moldovan food? Not so much. At least until now. Kaffeekreishas opened in Kreuzberg, filling a gap in the restaurant scene. With their shop, the two founders bring a touch of home to the city: Papanasi (quark slices), which they grew up eating, accompanied by homemade sea buckthorn tea. There are wines that few in Berlin know, even though they are among the oldest in Europe. The setting is as authentic as the menu: brick walls, old-building charm, and a hand-knotted carpet on the wall. Indoor and outdoor seating fills up quickly, whether for brunch with a cappuccino in the morning, or caviar blinis, savory papanasi with salmon, and a glass of Rară Neagră in the evening. Behind it all are Alexandru and Valeria, who wanted to bring their Moldovan homeland to Berlin. Together, they have turned a former bar into a living room for the neighborhood to create a place where people can linger. Kaffeekreis doesn’t follow trends; it fills a gap you didn’t even know existed. And suddenly, you find yourself asking: why only now?

CC CALENDAR: FROM OPEN AIR AT TREPTOWER STRAND TO THE FLEA MARKET AT JULES

CC CALENDAR: FROM OPEN AIR AT TREPTOWER STRAND TO THE FLEA MARKET AT JULES

What connects a flea market, queer dance training, swing music in a beer garden, and a last round on the beach? The desire to celebrate together — an attitude that combines escapism and solidarity. Here are CC’s Calendar tips for the weekend and beyond. Feel the sand between your toes one more time before August comes to an end. After a successful start last month, Refuge Worldwide invites you to a second open-air event (24.08.2025) on Treptower Straße. This time featuring Adam Cooke, do25inco, Mandel & Jana Falcon, and TRU:L — all residents of Berlin Community Radio. All proceeds, after venue and performance fees, will go directly to maintaining the station. There will be Jamaican cuisine from the grill from 14:00 until sunset, courtesy of Royal Jerk. On Thursday (28.08.), we’ll celebrate summer one last time with plant-based cuisine, poetry, and a long outdoor dining table. Safiya Robinson is cooking for Gather for the first time in Berlin. Her dishes are rooted in Afro-diasporic cooking traditions, inspired by her Black American, Jamaican, and English heritage. For her, it’s not just about taste, but attitude: how, why, and with whom we eat.

The menu is dedicated to Audre Lorde, the author and activist who once lived and worked in Berlin. The dinner will be accompanied by a live soundtrack from the Berlin label PLOT Records, which provides a platform for FLINTA* and BIPOC artists. With the Çaystube (27.–30.08.), the Pop-Kultur Festival creates an open, free space for queer, post-migrant, decolonial togetherness. Bodies as political voices, movement as identity: between dance, music, and discussion formats, a place is created that consciously opposes norms. The kickoff is on Wednesday in the courtyard and is free to attend. For those who prefer dancing to discussing, we recommend the Friendly Flohmarkt x Swing Base. On Sunday (31.08.), Jules B-Part will be transformed into a place of vintage finds, big band sound, and beginner workshops. Three live bands, drop-in courses for all levels, soft drinks, soft ice cream, and second-hand items are included. Admission is free, access is open to all, and a lively atmosphere is guaranteed. The Forward Festival is once again going deep. On 28.–29.08. at HKW, attend talks, performances, and workshops with Natasha Jen (Pentagram), Erik Kessels, Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam, and many more. The motto: “Turn ideas into action”. Whether on the dance floor, over a meal, or in conversation, the coming week will serve as an example of what can happen when people share space with each other. Perhaps this is the most beautiful way to end this Berlin summer.
