THE INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM FESTIVAL BERLIN STARTS

500 films offer quite a bit of cinematic inspiration – starting next Tuesday the 27th International Short Film Festival Berlin kicks off with screenings in Mitte and Neukölln. The program offers works from all genres – from documentaries to “Taiwananimation” (animated films from Taiwan). Besides that there are theme nights such as the “Lange Nacht des abwegigen Films” (long night of absurd movies) and six competitions, among them the “Viral Video Award”. The fictional movies are grouped by themes like “Liebe und Wahninn” (love and insanity) and “Skurille Welten” (whimsical worlds). One core topic of this year’s festival is Switzerland and its section “Weitblick Schweiz – Heidi Revisited”. For “Satricorti” of this section we’re giving away 2 pairs of tickets*: you’ll get to watch nine short films from Swiss filmmakers set between Marrakesh and atomic shelters. BULLY’S BAKERY – FROM CUPCAKES TO TARTE FLAMBÉE

Finding a café in Neukölln that serves good coffee (not the ones from the automatic machines) or good green tea plus a decent baguette or croissant AND that opens at 8 am is no easy task. But now we have Bully’s Bakery, where you can grab a bite to go or sit at one of the wooden tables and watch the Weserstrassen crowd pass by the window. For lunch they offer a selection of Flammkuchen (tarte flambée) with toppings such as the pear, gorgonzola and radicchio combo while having a wonderful selection of danish pastries, cakes and cup cakes to choose from all day long. Everything at Bully’s is handmade by Daniel – a trained pâtissier and chef, together with Susann, his partner in crime and life. And let’s not forget there’s Kurt too, whose striking profile is the shop’s logo and an inspiration to the shop’s name. He’s a lovely fella you don’t need to be afraid of, but definitely a curious one. Until now I’ve only tried the breakfast/cake selection (yummy) but what I can say for sure is that Bully’s Bakery team is lovely and entering the this café will brighten up your day. The airy atmosphere plus a nice selection of magazines make this place a perfect option to visit on a weekend afternoon as well. But don’t let yourself be fooled by their website: they’re closed on Mondays!

You are what you eat – this concept is nothing new and quite obvious to everyone. Nevertheless we tend to massively underestimate how much of what you consume directly influence your health. “Food Matters” is a well made documentary film that not only explains the obvious in detail to make you rethink of the old adage but also expose the hidden agendas of big pharma and big agra industries. PHILIPPE NOWOTNY ON THE RESTAURANT MOUSTACHE

“Moustache” is a French restaurant like no other in Berlin. Led by Gilles Papelian and Chef de Cuisine Jean Francois Martineau for over twenty years, the restaurant offers real french food (!!!) that is a unique symphony of taste and scent. The chef has his signature style of preparing the food and selects only the very best ingredients. Almost everything is homemade (!) in a traditional manner. Even though both chefs speak very good German, in entering the restaurant you’ll be welcomed in French. Moustache is my canteen. The three-course lunch menus offered here are typical Parisian midday meals; you can sit down for an hour and amuse your body with a real treat, ideally accompanied with a glass of their Bordeaux house wine. The evening menu offers simple but fine classics and changes twices a month. Additionally they have theme nights, such as the “Coc au Vin” night accompanied by a Beaujolais Nouveau wine; from November 17th to 19th.

“TUMULUS” – BOOK PRESENTATION AT THE GFMF SALON

“TUMULUS” – BOOK PRESENTATION AT THE GFMF SALON

“Tumulus” is the name of a collaborative book by photographers Roger Eberhard und James Nizam. The images were taken on a journey to an abandoned island of Pitt Lake, close to the Canadian city of Vancouver. The island is an enchanted yet destroyed place with leftovers from former holiday houses slowly decaying as time passes. The book also features a poetic essay by Dion Kline and will be presented tonight in Kirsten Hermann’s “GFMF Salon”. The salon is the latest addition to her little gallery for modern photography (Galerie für Moderne Fotografie) and is located on the second floor in the same building.
