LITERARY ENCOUNTERS AT BRECHT’S BRANDENBURG SUMMER HOUSE — RECOMMENDED BY DANIELA PENSOLD

LITERARY ENCOUNTERS AT BRECHT’S BRANDENBURG SUMMER HOUSE — RECOMMENDED BY DANIELA PENSOLD

What better place to discover cultural history than Brandenburg’s picturesque Märkische Schweiz – the backdrop to the Brecht-Weigel-Haus, a museum and memorial dedicated to its former residents, playwright Bertolt Brecht and actor Helene Weigel. The house sits in Buckow, a refuge for Berlin individualists and artists since the 1920s and which for Brecht was the ideal place to live and work. The heritage-listed studio and house was nicknamed the “Iron Villa” because of its striking lattice windows, and sits directly on the shore of the turquoise-blue waters of the Schermützelsee. It was here that Brecht wrote the Buckow Elegies, his last great collection of poems published in 1953, and now visitors can view the sun-filled drawing rooms complete with original furnishings, stroll through the large garden and marvel at famous theater props stored in the garden house, including the cart used in the Berliner Ensemble production of “Mother Courage”. Every third Sunday of the month there is a guided walk where you can learn the complete history of the couple’s summer house. (Text & Photos: Daniela Pensold)

STIENITZSEE: TRANQUIL LAKE FOR LAID–BACK BATHING AND BOARDWALK STROLLS

STIENITZSEE: TRANQUIL LAKE FOR LAID–BACK BATHING AND BOARDWALK STROLLS

It’s tempting to think that for the best lakes you have to head deep into Brandenburg. Located just east of city limits in a Naturschutzgebiet, the glacier-formed Stienitzsee proves this not to be the case: 220 hectares of clear water with a shoreline offering everything from dense forest to golden sand. And despite all this, being just an hour from Mitte, you are guaranteed to find a nice spot on even the hottest of Saturdays. The water is a 15-minute cycle from S-Bahn station Strausberg, with a lovely route through the forest to the northern shore and its tree-covered boardwalk. Following the shoreline, you will find numerous shady spots plus a sunny grass patch, with the initially shallow water perfect for easy bathing and voyages by boat and paddleboard. Entry points can also be found on the western shore, while those wanting sand between their toes can head to Strandbad Stienitzsee for a small entry fee. Whichever spot you pick, a swim around the lilies and tiny fish shoals is a perfect summer stress reliever. (Text: Benji Haughton / Photos: Benji Haughton)

You can reach the lake in around an hour by S-Bahn and bike or 45min by car. Drivers can park in the town of Hennickendorf and continue on foot.

HIGH LIFE IN GESUNDBRUNNEN — CLIMBING AT MAGIC MOUNTAIN

HIGH LIFE IN GESUNDBRUNNEN — CLIMBING AT MAGIC MOUNTAIN

As soon as you take your first step onto a climbing wall, all of your thoughts and daily busyness fade into the background. This vertical meditation can be found at a place you might not know existed: Magic Mountain, a stone’s throw from Gesundbrunnen station. A climbers’ haven since 2002, the hall offers around 300 different routes for both top rope and lead climbers, with walls reaching 15m high. In good weather, you can head out to the attached garden to climb, boulder or simply dangle in a hammock under the blue sky. For colder days, a large indoor bouldering area plus fitness equipment and a sauna are bound to keep you occupied before you finish up with a well-deserved drink at the Klettercafé. Trial climbing sessions offer an introduction to the sport for absolute beginners, while the colorful hall’s relaxed atmosphere and mixed crowd ensure a friendly welcome. Looking for a climbing partner? Head to the handy meet-up point and pick up a friend to ascend with. Time to take the leap! (Text & Photos: Ramona Razaghmanesh)

DISC GOLF — THE FRISBEE SPORT FOR KEEN SPINNERS AND PUTTERS

DISC GOLF — THE FRISBEE SPORT FOR KEEN SPINNERS AND PUTTERS

Looking to try a new sport this summer? Here’s one you might not have heard of: Disc Golf, which Lichterfelde sports club TuSli has been offering since June 2020. As with golf, the aim is to reach each of the nine holes in as few goes as possible, but instead of a ball you have a frisbee, and your task is to throw it into a metal basket. World champion disc golfer Stephen Defty from TuSli brought the sport with him when he came to Germany from America in the 80s. And now his club hosts regular practice sessions at the Disc Golf Park located in lush greenery by the Bäke canal. Unusual for a sport, this game is open to all, from retirees to youngsters and wheelchair users – all in the relaxed outdoors a stone’s throw from the Otto Lilienthal monument. Time to pick up a disc at the next beginners practice session and get throwing! (Text & Photos: Ramona Razaghmanesh)

Disc Golf is run by the Turn- und Sportverein Lichterfelde in the park between Krahmer- and Bäkestraße, 12207 Berlin-Lichterfelde; map. Free practice sessions usually take place on Friday at 18h30 – exact dates and registration can be found on the website.

GROß GLIENICKER SEE — SWIMMING AND BOATING IN THE COOL, CLEAR WATER

GROß GLIENICKER SEE — SWIMMING AND BOATING IN THE COOL, CLEAR WATER

This weekend is going to be a hot one – the perfect time then to hit the water with friends. Groß Glienicker See is one of the purest lakes around and offers both official bathing areas and numerous smaller places with access to the water – just wander around the shores and you are bound to find a sweet spot. The Berlin–Brandenburg boundary (and previously the East-West German border) lies in the middle of the water, which at eleven meters at its deepest is well suited to swimming. The water itself is so clear and pure that you can see small shoals of fish as you swim. In the middle of the water sit two small islands which you can reach in comfort in a rental boat or, if you are feeling brave, by swimming. For a more relaxed afternoon there is a sunbathing lawn on the western side that offers sun loungers but also numerous trees offering shade from the sun. If you need refueling, the nearby Seeperle kiosk will gladly keep you cool with an iced coffee and a portion of fries (“Rot” and/or “Weiß” of course). Time to pack you swimwear, sun cream and camera and head west. (Text & Photos: Ramona Razaghmanesh)
