LEITHA MATZ RECOMMENDS: KURHAUS PONTE ROSA

LEITHA MATZ RECOMMENDS: KURHAUS PONTE ROSA

You could easily walk right past Kurhaus Ponte Rosa. Fair enough — why would you look for something enchanting along a railway embankment? Yet like so many Berlin treasures, there’s more here than meets the eye. Venture past the gate and down the tree-lined path. You’ll hear chortles of laughter in the afternoon breeze. You’ll breathe in the scent of pizza crusts lightly charring over hot stone. Kids hustle between long tables and benches. Well-behaved dogs are welcome. It’s self-service, so bring a few friends to stake out your seats while someone puts in a pizza order. Relax in the evening light. Remember why we put up with the endless months of wintery gray. We are taking in the cure. Just don’t let your bliss fool you into a false sense of permanence. Life is short and the summer will soon be gone. So, too, will Ponte Rosa. Despite grumbling by neighborhood supporters, the city has plans for residential development here. Now’s the time to drink in these slowly fading summer evenings. THE BRIDGE STREET KITCHEN: GOURMET HEAVYWEIGHTS TO GO

THE BRIDGE STREET KITCHEN: GOURMET HEAVYWEIGHTS TO GO

Across from the bright facades of Copenhagen’s iconic Nyhavn waterfront and the Inner Harbour Bridge, find Copenhagen’s new meeting point of worldly flavors. Here, on the Greenlandic Trade Square, once the meeting point of fish merchants and traders, is where The Bridge Street Kitchen opened this summer. A collaboration between Copenhagen Street Food (formerly behind Paper Island) and the owners of Noma, the waterfront square brings together a mighty bunch of kitchens, bars and cafés that best represent Copenhagen’s gastronomic scene. From all-day porridge options by Grød, who serve a wonderful chicken congee with spring onions, peanuts and sesame oil, try also the poke bowl with marinated salmon, seaweed and pickled ginger at California Kitchen to really make the wait worth it during peak hours. There are also greasy-delicious burgers by Gasoline Grill, Michelin-recommended smørrebrødat at Palaegade, and four bars serving local brews and lemonade nestled within colorful beach house-style stalls. Grab your lunch to go and settle down on one of the many beer benches and lounge chairs while canal cruises and electric boats drift through the harbor. (Text: Victoria Pease / Photos: Martin Kaufmann)

PHOTOGRAPHY IN FILM — DREAMY OPEN-AIR SCREENINGS IN MITTE

PHOTOGRAPHY IN FILM — DREAMY OPEN-AIR SCREENINGS IN MITTE

Photography meets film. The perfect reason to spend an evening out under the stars. In partnership with the European Month of Photography, the Museums Journal magazine is hosting an open-air film series giving culture lovers what their hearts’ desire. Every Wednesday from July to August, the garden of the Podewil Baroque palace will transform into a dreamy open-air setting for the presentation of nine works that address the topic of photography in film, such as “The Salt of the Eart” about photographer Sebastião Salgado by filmmaker Wim Wenders, the documentary “Finding Vivian Maier”, or Marianne Kampfer’s film about Hills and Bernd Becher. (Text: Lisa Staub / Werks: Vivian Maier/John Maloof and Charlie Siskel, Sebastião Salgado/Wim Wenders / Photo of Podewil garden: Christoph Tempel)

TROPEZ — POOLSIDE ART AT SOMMERBAD HUMBOLDTHAIN

TROPEZ — POOLSIDE ART AT SOMMERBAD HUMBOLDTHAIN

Our favorite Freibad this summer is much more than just a pool: For the second year running, Tropez has taken over Sommerbad Humboldthain to create a space for art, music, debate and relaxation. Alongside the permanent “Voyage” exhibition, the varied program (led by Nele Heinevette) brings together the likes of Aurora Sander, Bob’s Pogo Bar and Broken Dimanche Press to infuse your bathing sessions with an intellectual challenge or two. Coming up this Saturday (23.6.2018) is Creamcake’s second edition of “Europool“, a panel discussion on “Perspectives on a more Plural Europe”, which brings together sociological, legal, artistic and activist perspectives on the question of reshaping Europe together. Pack your bathing suit, spare change (Tropez also doubles as a kiosk, with top notch pommes frites) and an open mind — we’ll see you poolside. CYCLING MADE EASY WITH BYKE

CYCLING MADE EASY WITH BYKE

The summer months in Berlin go hand in hand with biking. Often, however, our bike isn’t exactly where we need it to be, plans change and the weather can be unpredictable. So how can we stay flexible when cycling? The answer: bike sharing. Berlin-based Byke provides bikes for hire, showing us how easy it can be: Their app locates all available bikes in your vicinity on a city map and — for the directionally-challenged — shows you how to reach your mode of transportation. You’ll be set to start your journey in no time, with at least 30 minutes at your disposal to get to where you want to be. As the bikes aren’t bound to a particular station, you’re free to park in any public place within the designated area. If the weather is so beautiful that a short ride turns into a spontaneous tour of the countryside, you can simply keep on pedalling, as the journey is automatically billed in 30-minute increments. So, dear Berlin weather, if you end up changing your untameable mind and let the sun re-appear from behind the clouds after a rainy morning, we’ll have our bykes at the ready. (Text: Lisa Staub / Photos: Robert Rieger)

To use Byke, download the app to your mobile phone (available for Android and iOS). For more information visit Byke’s website.
