STRIKE A POSE AT MOTION*S FOR THE VOGUE BALL AT C/O BERLIN

STRIKE A POSE AT MOTION*S FOR THE VOGUE BALL AT C/O BERLIN

Fake it till you make it! Voguing is so much more than just the choreography to a Madonna video: With its origins in the African American and Latino queer scene in 1960s Harlem, the movement provides the opportunity to express oneself freely and with confidence. Dancers organize themselves into so-called houses, which function as a substitute family. At Motion*s studio, you can experiment with any pose. Your teacher here is Mother Leo Melody, who founded Germany’s first Voguing house, House of Melody, in 2012 and has since played a formative role in building Berlin’s voguing scene. The beginner course on Mondays teach typical poses and variations, which can then be perfected in the open jam session on Wednesday evenings. The music is loud, the beat is commanding and voguers celebrate themselves on the dance floor, pushing their bodies to the limit. Those who fall do so while in full control and with lots of drama. Heels are welcome, and the styles include elements of hip hop, catwalking and gymnastics. Above all, voguers’ attitudes toward life radiate throughout the room, especially whilst competing in regular ballroom events. C/O Berlin is hosting the next one on 16.6.2018, which will be presented by Zueira Mizrahi of the House of Mizrahi as part of the current Irving Penn exhibition. Penn’s stagings of his models were not only formative for Vogue’s style but also became iconic for the movement named after the magazine. On that note: Strike a Pose! DIGGING IN THE DIRT PAYS OFF WITH DIE BODEN SCHAFFT

DIGGING IN THE DIRT PAYS OFF WITH DIE BODEN SCHAFFT

Even as passionate city dwellers, we’re naturally concerned with our environment and its ongoing sustainability. Taking a different approach to our kitchen scraps is one simple way to mitigate our impact. Read: compost, which is the obsession behind Die Boden Schafft, a 2012-founded initiative aimed at generating new soil, raising awareness about the earth we walk on and educating about all things compost. To achieve their goal, the team around founder Martina Kolarek regularly offers events and workshops. All that’s required is two square meters of soil, your kitchen scraps and a little bit of time. Alternatively, join one of Die Boden Schafft’s excursions to Brandenburg on 27.5.18, where a workshop will take place on the Grüna farm — the perfect opportunity to swap the city for the countryside, if only for one day. Register via email and prepare to get your hands dirty — and to see your garden, whether balcony or otherwise, flourish! YOGA NOW — REPLENISH YOUR ENERGY IN A HIDDEN OASIS

YOGA NOW — REPLENISH YOUR ENERGY IN A HIDDEN OASIS

When we do yoga, we want to escape from the fast pace of everyday life and make more time for ourselves — at least for the length of a course. Yoga Now wants your time out to extend beyond Shavasana, and into your daily life under the slogan: “What’s your yoga?” Jan Herzberg founded the studio in July 2017 to offer yoga for everyone, with styles ranging from Jivamukti and Ashtanga to Yin Yoga, and teachers taking a free approach to designing their classes. I attended a morning Ashtanga course and really enjoyed the light-flooded room and the unexpected tranquility before the Asanas commenced — after walking through two rear courtyards and up several flights of stairs, the hustle and bustle of Kreuzberg is quickly forgotten. Most courses at Yoga Now are designed for both beginners and advanced students, with the exercises are adapted to the level of individual participants. You will be challenged, but not overwhelmed, and you will definitely feel rested after. Plans to extend the attic into a kitchen and roof terrace made for meditation whilst overlooking the rooftops of Kreuzberg are currently in the works — in the meantime, you can find a view to your inner self during a free meditation session on Sundays. Namaste. KATRIN PAULINE MÜLLER RECOMMENDS: LIBKEN

KATRIN PAULINE MÜLLER RECOMMENDS: LIBKEN

As if time has stood resolutely still, Libken’s “Plattenbau” (a prefabricated apartment block, typical of East Germany) emerges as a modern monument to thought and creation against the bucolic landscape of the Uckermark. In 2014, Larissa Rosa Lackner, Theresa Pommerenke and Christoph Bartsch initiated their first artist residency here. This year (2018) sees the second round of a special scholarship for culinary arts, which, from July through September, gives recipients the chance to conduct research on the art of cooking while experimenting with regional products. Together with local producers, the artists-in-residence prepare delicacies for a series of al fresco dinners entitled “Lange Tafel”. These events are open to the public, and my experience of participating still evokes vivid memories: An abundance of vegetables had been preserved and prepared with love, sophistication and appreciation. The sweet smell of bread and sizzling meat filled the air; life suddenly seemed simple again. Smiling faces surrounded me, while the fields stretched to the horizon, and a deer frolicked in the still of the evening. (Text: Katrin Pauline Müller / Photos: Larissa Rosa Lackner, Libken e.V.)

Lange Tafel next takes place on 28.7, 25.8 and 29.9.2018.

Katrin Pauline Müller is an author and an artist. Communication, body language, senses and emotions make up her field of exploration. She has lived in Berlin since 2000 and currently calls Mitte home.

DORO MÜGGLER RECOMMENDS: SALON BORDEL!

DORO MÜGGLER RECOMMENDS: SALON BORDEL!

“Wow, what a shop!” — That was the thought that crossed my mind when I first entered this hairdressing salon on Luisenstraße, and it’s one I also heard come from the mouths of many other customers that day. After 10 years in Schöneberg, founders Daniela Mezzapesa and Simone Greve opened a second shop in the center of Berlin with a new slogan: “Salon Bordel! Born in Berlin”. Their commitment to dedicated craftsmanship and well as personable yet and professional customer relationships is reflected in the design of their new space — it wouldn’t look out of place in New York, or in Berlin’s golden ‘20s era. Even the quickest of glances through Salon Bordel’s large windows reveals the creativity of this business. The rooms present themselves with playful ease — they’re confident, elegant and quirky all at once. It’s no surprise that Bordel! now also has its own organic product line as well, developed true to the motto: “contains only what it should”. I recommend Salon Bordel! to anyone who values the artistry of Berlin design alongside the highest standards of hairdressing. (Text: Doro Müggler / Photos: Meyer|Ott)
