BERLIN CALLING — THE HOTTEST TIPS FOR YOUR WEEK

BERLIN CALLING — THE HOTTEST TIPS FOR YOUR WEEK

Berlin is putting its best foot forward once again, offering plenty of exciting events this week to lure you out of the house. Whether you’re a foodie, jazz enthusiast or running fanatic, we have some great recommendations for you. On Saturday (21.09.2024) Dela’s Studio and Le Bar will kick off the weekend in style with a three-course brunch featuring regional, vegetarian and vegan dishes, followed by an after-party with drinks and a DJ set by Twin Charmz. This event is brought to you by Maite Fonseca and Gillian East, the creative duo behind Dela’s Studio, a queer tattoo studio and inclusive space for all. If you’re more into Mediterranean flavors, head to Barra Berlin on Sunday (22.09) where Tommaso Formica will bring the tastes of Liguria to the city. Expect dishes like Sardenaira, Tagliolini Pistou and John Dory, all prepared with authentic flair. For those who can’t resist a good steak, La Petite Estelle will serve up perfectly cooked steak, crispy chips and a stunning Béarnaise sauce.

On Monday (23.09) Co Barbers Studios will launch its first run club — “Sundown Shake Out Spree Sprint”. The group will meet on Rosenthaler Straße for a relaxed jog along the Spree, with coffee and snacks provided beforehand. (You can leave your belongings safely at the studio.) If you can’t make it to these weekend events, here’s a tip for Tuesday evenings: Anima Jazz Nights offers the perfect midweek escape. With a selection of wines and drinks, Nico Serban sets the mood with his curated jazz records, creating a laid-back vibe every week. Whether you’re up for a culinary adventure, lacing up your running shoes, or simply unwinding to good music, Berlin has more to offer this week than you can imagine. Don’t miss out!

LIVE RAP AND DANCE-OFFS: 50 YEARS OF HIP HOP AT FOTOGRAFISKA BERLIN — OPENING PARTY ON 20.09.2024

LIVE RAP AND DANCE-OFFS: 50 YEARS OF HIP HOP AT FOTOGRAFISKA BERLIN — OPENING PARTY ON 20.09.2024

Scratch battles and breakdancing – not your average museum vernissage, is it? But that’s just what’s coming your way at the opening party of Hip Hop: Conscious, Unconscious, the upcoming show at the Fotografiska Berlin exhibition house in Mitte (20.09.2024, 19h30 till late). Live performances, DJ sets and dance-offs will mark the opening of the 200-photo collection, which honors half a century of hip hop since its alleged inception at a New York block party in 1973. Hip-hop has gone on to become the dominant musical genre in the United States and beyond – a legacy which the opening will spotlight, giving particular attention to the women who have shaped the genre. Music highlights include a high-energy turntable showcase with vinyl selectors Jazzmin and Marc Hype, cutting-edge live rap from Layla and infectious energy from DJ Jenesis at the Fotografiska Café Bar. The rhymes and moves continue until the early hours with Dimitra Zina spinning bangers at the Bar Verōnika stage. It’s taken 50 years, but hip hop is finally getting the attention it deserves. Call it poetic justice…

BELLA ITALIA! FOOD MARKET, TASTINGS & MORE FOR FOOD WEEK BERLIN

BELLA ITALIA! FOOD MARKET, TASTINGS & MORE FOR FOOD WEEK BERLIN

Back to work but still dreaming of summer? We get it. Here’s a little trick: bring back that vacation feeling with Mediterranean treats. The Food Festival Berlin (16–22.09.), organized by our friends at tipBerlin in collaboration with Viani, brings Mediterranean food culture to Berlin. The Food Market (21–22.09.) will take over Invalidenstraße, transforming it into an Italian oasis. Over two days, all 16 Italian regions will be represented at St. Elisabeth Church, with around 50 producers coming to town just for this event. Naturally, they’re bringing their finest specialties with them. What would our kitchens be without olive oil, balsamic vinegar and San Marzano tomatoes? If you want to try Ligurian olive oil or Campanian lemons, this is your chance. Outside, in the church garden, you can indulge in Neapolitan delights from Tiny’s Pizza or join a “make your own pizza” workshop. There will be porchetta sandwiches, and yes, even an oyster bar. Chefs Sebastian Mrohs and Francesco Todescato will be showcasing all things Italian risotto, introducing the koji mushroom, and presenting their sake. But the Food Market is just one slice of the pizza. The week will also feature tastings at Viani stores and special Italian dinners at some of Berlin’s best restaurants, including Il Calice. So, if you’re craving a taste of Italy, this is your chance. Bella Italia has never felt so near.

ART-FILLED AND HUNGRY FOR MORE: THE BEST POP-UPS AND OPENINGS TO CHECK OUT IN BETWEEN GALLERIES

ART-FILLED AND HUNGRY FOR MORE: THE BEST POP-UPS AND OPENINGS TO CHECK OUT IN BETWEEN GALLERIES

There’s so much to experience during art week! From pop-ups and new openings to special events, here are tips to sweeten your gallery marathon with some well-deserved breaks. The weekend kicks off with donuts in Prenzlauer Berg, where No School Donuts is hosting a pop-up at Kai Matcha House. What makes these donuts so special? They’re vegan, gluten-free and completely irresistible. Expect new flavors like Matcha Crème Brûlée and Matcha Chocolate. Pro tip: get there early, these treats tend to sell out fast! Since last week, Dorle has been a must-visit for vegan tapas from Dinnersquats and drinks from Dorle. The vibe is relaxed and the portions are great for sharing — think vegan tuna sashimi and nectarines with burrata. On Sunday, make a quick detour to Neukölln for Hanja’s pop-up at The Rad, where you can savor the flavors of the Croatian islands with fresh pastries and homemade preserves. To cap off your weekend, head to the soft opening of Ernst Cave, a new wine bar next to Julius in Wedding. Here, wine is not only served but also sold, so you can take home a bottle of your favorite, from classic vintages to new finds. The soft opening is the perfect chance to get a taste before Ernst Cave officially opens in November. And if you’re in the mood for more art, don’t miss the “Group Show 2” at New & Abstract, showcasing exciting works by up-and-coming artists who offer fresh takes on contemporary themes. September is treating us to some truly irresistible moments!

EMAILS? WHAT EMAILS? — CLOCK OFF WITH BEATS, BREWS & BURGERS AT THE ART OF AFTERWORK

EMAILS? WHAT EMAILS? — CLOCK OFF WITH BEATS, BREWS & BURGERS AT THE ART OF AFTERWORK

Satisfaction. Anticipation. Relief? When you close the laptop lid on another day of deadlines, emails and meetings that could have been emails, you might be experiencing some combination of these sentiments. But how to decompress and digest after a day at work? If conversation, comfort food and feel-good bops sound like your perfect “après-travail”, here’s an entry for this month’s calendar: 19.09.2024 at 17h30. Friedrichshain venue Nåpoleon Komplex is hosting an after-work event called, fittingly, The Art of Afterwork that features weeknight goodies that will have you clearing your desk pronto. Hosted by the beer-brewing Dutchmen and women from Heineken, the gathering will naturally include plenty of cool lager, but also decadent burgers from Goldies and saucy zesty tacos from Taqueria el Oso. Soundtracking the food and drink are two stages: one curated by Toy Tonics, who are whipping up a program of house, disco, and funk concoctions (live/dj), and another by Deadhype, who will be owning the floor with DJ chuggers and dishing out a personalized, exclusive collab shirt. An installation from Isabelle Tellié rounds off the cultural program. Tickets for the event are limited, so reserve your spot online and get ready to wind down and sip up – you’ve earned it!
