MEMORY BEACH & PERFORMANCE ELECTRICS: TWO OF BRANDENBURG’S CULTURAL HOTSPOTS LIGHT UP WITH ART AND PERFORMANCE

MEMORY BEACH & PERFORMANCE ELECTRICS: TWO OF BRANDENBURG’S CULTURAL HOTSPOTS LIGHT UP WITH ART AND PERFORMANCE

What do the E-Werk Luckenwalde and Künstlerhof Frohnau have in common? Both are venues for art and culture and both were influenced by the GDR’s post-war period and German reunification. In the north of Berlin, a 100-meter-wide and two-kilometer-long sandbar marks the landscape, and like every scar, it has its own history: it is the former “death zone” – a no man’s land. Now, however, it’s a place for artistic productions and discourse – Künstlerhof Frohnau – where you can rent studio space and participate in events, workshops and cultural programs. On Saturday (01.07.2023) Memory Beach, the contemporary festival for music and performance, will be taking place at the site. For one day, its courtyard will be transformed into a space of experience and movement for residents, participants and visitors. As part of the festival, this scarred strip of land will become a place of storytelling, tours and staging. The open air event is free of charge and starts in the early afternoon (can stay here until late in the evening). In the opposite direction, just 30 minutes south of Berlin, is E-Werk Luckenwalde, a coal-fired power plant opened in 1913 that was decommissioned after reunification.

In 2017, the art collective Performance Electrics led by Pablo Wendel brought the site back to life – powered not by electricity but by art. This weekend (01 & 02.07.2023), the site is hosting the first stage of the “Burn Out” symposium series, in which speakers will present their research results on topics related to human sustainability: Institutional Burnouts, Ecosystemic Infrastructure Change, and Hypocrisy in the Art World. They will address critical questions about what institutional growth can look like and where its limits lie. How can we dislodge environmental imperialism and take radical action locally and globally to rectify historical exploitation? Performances will be distributed throughout the program, creating non-didactic spaces for reflection and promoting art as an equally valuable form of knowledge transfer. Presentations will be in both German and English with live translation. Food and beverages will be available from Trafo and the E-Werk gardens will be freely accessible. Brandenburg has a lot to offer besides wheat fields, the Havel and gherkins: it is home to contemporary art that engages with world affairs both present and past. This weekend is more proof of this.

EN ROUTE: AXEL ARIGATO’S MUSIC TRUCK MAKES A STOP AT RAW-GELÄNDE

EN ROUTE: AXEL ARIGATO’S MUSIC TRUCK MAKES A STOP AT RAW-GELÄNDE

Fashion and music – that’s a match made in heaven. The two inspire each other and are twice as fun when they’re combined. What would a concert be without the eye-catching stage looks, what would a fashion show be without the fitting soundtrack – and what would your night out be without the carefully chosen outfit? Exactly! The creators of the brand Axel Arigato, founded in Sweden, also love music and, in general, creating experiences. They see their brand, founded in 2014, as a stage and have made it big – not only through Instagram and a store in London – but also a festival back in Copenhagen. If a truck with great sounds were to pull up on the RAW-Gelände, let’s say – it could be one of those moments: one to be remembered. Not only because the truck is yellow, in keeping with Axel Arigato’s style and – to match what marked the brand’s success – looks like a shoebox. It’s also because the lineup is curated by Berlin’s hyped music and broadcasting community, Hör. As a result, the lineup is fresh: among others, Lily Ackerman, Cecilia Tosh (Kotti Island) and Tommy Holohan, known for her heavy tech house, will be on the decks. In other words, Saturday won’t just be hot hot hot in terms of the weather, but also because the RAW-Gelände will briefly be transformed into an open-air party. It might just be one of those unforgettable Berlin moments that not only looks and sounds good, but is simply unique.

SUNDOWNER ON FRIDAYS: DRINKS, MUSIC & WEEKEND VIBES AT CEE CEE CAFE

SUNDOWNER ON FRIDAYS: DRINKS, MUSIC & WEEKEND VIBES AT CEE CEE CAFE

How about winding down the week on a quiet corner, with relaxing vibes and a refreshing beverage of your choice? If that’s your idea of the perfect Friday night too, come on by, because from now on Fridays are Aperitivo Time at Cee Cee Cafe. Maybe you’ve heard: We’ve opened a pop-up cafe, around for the next few months somewhere between Checkpoint Charlie and the Jewish Museum. It’s not on your route home exactly, but it’s a wonderfully tranquil and sunny corner right in the middle of it all. Our barista team serves specialty coffee and matcha from Matchasome during the day, and bubbly, sparkling and chilled beverages in the evening. With and without – that is to say: recently non-alcoholic drinks from the Mindful Drinking Club complement the selection when the aperitivo o’clock starts. So best come right at 17h – music is provided. Small snacks for before (or after) dinner are also available. So, all that’s missing for the best balmy summer evening is you.

A VIEW WITH A FEELING — DRINKS, TUNES & TASTES AT STUDIO 14, THE RBB ROOFTOP LOUNGE

A VIEW WITH A FEELING — DRINKS, TUNES & TASTES AT STUDIO 14, THE RBB ROOFTOP LOUNGE

About once a year I take the U-Bahn to Theodor-Heuss-Platz, where emerging in the warm summer twilight, I sigh: “Oh, West Berlin.” The sky is grey-purple and red neon lights glow as spots of light shine from cars darting across the architectural mix. The scene evokes a mood that resembles how Todd Hito’s photos might look if they were taken in the city. I think how I myself stand in the middle of it all – as if life were a film where you see yourself from above. My delight is all the greater when I discover Studio 14. This rooftop lounge at state broadcaster rbb’s headquarters has a view that extends far beyond West Berlin. Located on top of the studios, the location is lots of things: rooftop bar, restaurant, production facility, concert hall, event location and – above all – insider tip. It would probably be enough just to head up to the 14th floor of the studios every now and then to look down on the streets and imagine yourself your own Berlin soap opera. But there are more surprises: excellent drinks, exclusive lounge concerts, alternating DJ sets and small plates. The best thing about it is that it opens at 16h every day. The second best thing is that the menu is full of classics with a twist (think oh-so-German Senfeier but served up tapas style). The new and old West, brought together above the clouds (well, almost). If you’re longing for radio, city lights and drinks in fine glasses, we urge you to go West, go up and breathe out: “Oh West Berlin…”!
