LIT OUT LOUD — AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR TALKS AND BOOK CLUB CHATS IN BARS

LIT OUT LOUD — AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR TALKS AND BOOK CLUB CHATS IN BARS

Just you, a cup of tea and the printed page – books can be a lonely business, can’t they? But reader, it doesn’t have to be this way, because Berlin’s literature community has two gatherings lined up that will have you starting a fresh, people-filled chapter. First up is the British Council Literature Seminar (16–18.03.2023) which starts tonight with a special event with author Bernardine Evaristo at Oyoun. You can join the 2019 Booker Prize winner in conversation with literary agent Sharmaine Lovegrove, where the topic will be class and contemporary writing in the UK. The program continues tomorrow with a reading and discussion with British/Irish writer Kit De Waal. Now fast forward to next Friday and the Leseclubfestival (24.03), a lit meetup that combines 33 book club-style events across 10 German cities.

The festival works as follows: you pick a book that appeals and buy a €27 ticket which includes a copy of the book sent to your address, entry to the event with the author and a drink. For its Berlin events, the festival has partnered up with youth literature collective Kabeljau und Dorsch, who will be moderating conversations between readers and authors. Austrian writer Tonio Schachinger will be leading discussion about his book “Echtzeitalter” at Palermo Bar in Neukölln, while nearby at Wolf Kino 29-year-old author Cecilia Joyce Röski will be chatting about her debut novel “Poussi”. Incidentally, Kabeljau und Dorsch also host regular book-based events of their own, so be assured: you’ll never read alone.

MAKING THEMSELVES HEARD — LILA PODCAST MARKS TEN YEARS OF FEMINIST CONVERSATIONS WITH LIVE EVENT

MAKING THEMSELVES HEARD — LILA PODCAST MARKS TEN YEARS OF FEMINIST CONVERSATIONS WITH LIVE EVENT

It’s been around since 1911, celebrated on 8th March since 1921 and marked with a public holiday (at least in Berlin!) since 2019. We are, of course, talking about International Women’s Day. To mark the occasion, there will be a very special live recording of the Lila podcast at The Playce on Potsdamer Platz. Since launching the show in 2013, hosts Laura Lucas, Lena Sindermann, Katrin Rönicke and Susanne Klingner have been discussing the hottest issues and debates around feminism. During the live show you will have the opportunity to join the debate and ask your own questions. What do feminist politics look like? What is the role of language in feminism? And how can we improve the media’s portrayal of women? All this and more will be the subject of the live episode in which the hosts will reflect on feminism in the last decade: the progress, the challenges and the ongoing drive for equality. After the show, you can join the hosts for a get-together with drinks and R&B/Neo-Soul music from Novine. Sound like your vibe? You can register for the free event online.

BRLO X KEBAP WITH ATTITUDE HOLIDAY POP-UP — AYRAN SOFT SERVE, PHILLY CHEESE LAMB KEBABS & CRAFT BEER

BRLO X KEBAP WITH ATTITUDE HOLIDAY POP-UP — AYRAN SOFT SERVE, PHILLY CHEESE LAMB KEBABS & CRAFT BEER

In case you’ve forgotten, next Wednesday (08.03.2023) is International Women’s Day and Berlin is one of just two German states that recognizes it as a public holiday (lucky us, right?). To celebrate, Kreuzberg-based brewery Brlo has teamed up with Doner heroes Kebap with Attitude to bring you the ultimate comfort food feast: Philly Cheese kebabs, vegan pastrami, Ayran soft-serve and mezze with a twist. It’s part of a series of special events Brlo is holding on public holidays. Donations will be collected on the day for the victims of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria (Brlo is matching donations). The pop-up will be held at Brlo’s brewery, which is just a stone’s throw from Gleisdreieck Park. Ideal for when the food coma inevitably hits and you require a relaxing digestive stroll…

WHERE FOOD AND CULTURE BLEND: MANIFESTO MARKET IS OPENING AND YOU’RE INVITED TO BE AMONG THE FIRST TO GRAB A BITE

WHERE FOOD AND CULTURE BLEND: MANIFESTO MARKET IS OPENING AND YOU’RE INVITED TO BE AMONG THE FIRST TO GRAB A BITE

To all the foodies out there: this one’s for you! Well, also if you’re looking to be entertained. The place we’re talking about is called Manifesto Market – a new food concept just landing in Berlin. Manifesto Market adds another layer to the idea of a single destination for multiple food vendors: a bespoke stage for music programs, stand-up comedy, talks and so much more. We know places like this in Amsterdam, Lisbon and, well, Prague – because that’s where Manifesto Market was born. And we’ve actually been there and seen the original concept. Martin, a native New Yorker, and Hollie from Taiwan founded Manifesto Market in the Czech capital in 2018 and turned a derelict piece of land into a vibrant and entertaining place to dine, meet and have fun. And here we are now: months later in Berlin in a two-level location with a bespoke stage area, a kidz box below and two dozen food vendors. The crucial part of the concept: there’s lots of local players who are opening sister locations here. You might have been to Shaniu’s House of Noodles and Malakeh and now you have them all in one place.

The Manifesto Market team has asked us to help them spread the word and so we’re more than happy to invite you to the opening next Thursday (09.02). Come by and explore the culinary art from various restaurants: the top level is purely dedicated to various flavors from Asia while the ground floor sees an international mix with a journey across the Middle East to South America. Then there’s mixology magic from four bars and beer tapped directly from an impressive Pilsner Urquell tank. Expect live music, two DJs, a beer tapping school led by award-winning tapsters and, for the first guests, a free drink. There’s lots going on – you’ve got to see it for yourself. If you can’t make the opening, Manifesto Market is open daily from lunchtime to dinner as well as for after-movie munching. So whenever you feel you’re craving something but can’t decide: meet at Manifesto Market (which btw is the largest food hall in Europe!) and let’s get inspired for your next meal.
