CELEBRATE THE SOLSTICE SWEDISH-STYLE — SUMMER FESTIVAL THIS SATURDAY AT THE NORDIC EMBASSIES

CELEBRATE THE SOLSTICE SWEDISH-STYLE — SUMMER FESTIVAL THIS SATURDAY AT THE NORDIC EMBASSIES

It’s fast approaching summer solstice, and few people celebrate the longest day better than the Swedes. Whether it’s dancing, snacking on pickled herring or simply enjoying the endless daylight in good company, midsummer festival means a Nordic party nonpareil. This year you can celebrate right here in Berlin at the Swedish embassy’s summer festival, held this Saturday (18.06.2022) in the (usually closed) courtyard of the Nordic embassies in Tiergarten. Sweden will be offering Berliners a “varmt välkommen” with cuisine, culture and a showcase of the thing the country does best: design. At the Swedish Marketplace you can discover and buy design goods from some of the country’s most innovative and celebrated makers. Exquisite hallway concepts from Essem, natural textiles from Klippan Yllefabrik and the yoga-mat-meets-rug from Månsing are just some of the 30 stands that are exhibiting at the embassy plaza. Nourishment comes in the form of the “tunnbrödsrulle” wraps from @hotdogwrap and there’s a children’s tent to keep the little ones busy. Most importantly, there’s the obligatory maypole which you are very welcome to dance around – with a self-woven flower wreath in your hair, of course…

OPEN AIR CINEMA PICNIC WITH BELSAZAR ROSÉ AND TONICS UNDER THE NIGHT SKY

OPEN AIR CINEMA PICNIC WITH BELSAZAR ROSÉ AND TONICS UNDER THE NIGHT SKY

Cinema, concert and picnic – this Saturday (18.06.2022) you can indulge in all three of these joys at Freiluftkino Friedrichshain for a summer evening under the stars. And best of all: it all comes courtesy of vermouth brand Belsazar. From 16h you can assemble your friends on the outdoor cinema’s large lawn with drinks from the bar, including the fruity-sweet and surprisingly bitter rosé and tonic from Belsazar. There will be a food truck serving treats from the Black Forest plus live music from singer LIE NING and other surprises. The film fun begins at sunset with a screening of Karoline Herfurth’s latest picture “Wunderschön” (in German). If you want a little more luxury, you can book a picnic basket for two that comes with a selection of snacks plus everything you need to mix a Belsazar rose and tonic (while stocks last). Included in the price is entry to the film and (hopefully) a clear night’s sky. If you want to stay spontaneous, you can get the baskets on site, though supplies are limited. By the way: if you come dressed in either rosé, beige, white or peach, you’ll get your first Belsazar Rosé & Tonic Drink on the house. Cheers to that!

TRANSITIONING: THE ART, POLITICS & TECH OF GENDER CHANGE — 27TH DISRUPTION NETWORK LAB CONFERENCE AT KUNSTQUARTIER BETHANIEN

TRANSITIONING: THE ART, POLITICS & TECH OF GENDER CHANGE — 27TH DISRUPTION NETWORK LAB CONFERENCE AT KUNSTQUARTIER BETHANIEN

Transitioning is a process that everyone who changes their gender identity or gender characteristics goes through. Nevertheless, it’s a process that everyone experiences differently. The fundamental right to determine your body and identity is one that generations of LGBTQ+ activists have fought for over decades in Germany and worldwide. For young people affected today, new questions prevail – and that’s the focus of the 27th conference of the Disruption Network Lab (17–19.06.2022). Over three days, experts, artists and activists from across Europe will meet at Kunstquartier Bethanien to exchange ideas and discuss gender transitioning in the context of politics, medicine, technology, culture and games in a transdisciplinary and intergenerational way. Besides panels and lectures, the program will feature workshops, film screenings, performances and Q&As with representatives from trans communities.

For the “Performing Gender, Beyond Gender” panel on Friday (17.06), French artist and art therapist Anaïs Héraud-Louisadat will talk with Stephen Bottoms – Professor of Contemporary Theatre and Performance at the University of Manchester – about the late performance artist Diane Torr. The same evening, Berlin performer Bridge Markland will perform “King-ing the Drag – Drag-ing the King” before taking questions from the audience. On Saturday, Anastasiia Yeva Domani from Cohort NGO will speak about the situation of the trans community in Ukraine. In one of two workshops on Sunday, activists and researchers Os Keyes and Mallory Moore will show how anti-trans movements can be localized and monitored. This is followed by “Sex n Drag n Rock n Role”, a screening by Anaïs Héraud-Louisadat, who has curated a film selection celebrating Torr’s life. Being able to live out one’s self is a fundamental right that applies to all people; the fight for trans rights is thus one that affects us all. This conference gives space to communities and creates visibility for perspectives and issues which are important not just for those affected, but to anyone who wants to live in a democratic, pluralistic society.

ANY WAY THE WIND BLOWS — RE:PUBLICA 22 IS BACK WITH TALKS, WORKSHOPS AND THE LAUNCH OF THE .TXT NETWORKING EVENT

ANY WAY THE WIND BLOWS — RE:PUBLICA 22 IS BACK WITH TALKS, WORKSHOPS AND THE LAUNCH OF THE .TXT NETWORKING EVENT

“Any way the wind blows.” This poetic line (courtesy of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody) is the motto of Re:publica 22 (08–10.06.2022). Before the pandemic forced its suspension, the annual festival for digital society always closed with a rendition of the rock anthem. Now the event is back with its 15th edition, presenting a jam-packed program from Arena Berlin and, for the first time, Festsaal Kreuzberg next door. Choosing which of the 400 sessions and 700 speakers from politics, society, science, culture, business and media to see is quite a challenge – or, to put it in Queen’s words: mamma mia, mamma mia! Hosted on ten indoor and outdoor stages, the program includes the opening keynote by transformation researcher Maja Göpel, a conversation with philosopher Carolin Emcke and witty musings from Internet darling El Hotzo. Central topics this year include the climate crisis, the war in Ukraine, the pandemic, and digital society and its challenges. How do we deal with disinformation and hate on the web, for example? And what are the economic and social impacts of tech developments like the Metaverse, NFTs and AI?

In addition to keynotes, panel discussions, workshops and a Makerspace, the festival will feature art installations, exhibitions and performances – including one by artist and quantum physicist Libby Heaney. At the end of a busy day, you can look forward to live music (Tocotronic will be playing on 10.06.), karaoke and DJ sets while relaxing in the beach area, on the Badeschiff or at Hoppetosse. Saturday (11.06) will see the launch of networking event .txt (pronounced: “text”), taking place in the Glashaus and Badeschiff. It’s dedicated to the written word and features discussions about screenplays, song lyrics, tweets, graphic novels, essays, memes and more. Professionals will come together with autodidacts, authors, publishers, researchers and artists to celebrate writing, with Anja Rützel, Peter Wittkamp and Ariana Baborie set to attend. Sister program Tincon – the conference for digital youth culture for 13 to 25-year-olds (10–11.06.2022 at Festsaal Kreuzberg) – also promises much to discover.
