SOLIDARITY FOR THE SOUL — THREE ARTS EVENTS FOR THE WEEKEND

SOLIDARITY FOR THE SOUL — THREE ARTS EVENTS FOR THE WEEKEND

Another summer weekend is sneaking up on us, and if you’re in the mood to do it all you’ll have to decide between art, culture, music, food and drinks. Tomorrow, for example, you could go to Hakenfelde in Spandau, where CCCCCOMA (The five C’s stand for Curatorial Collective Connecting Concepts of Communication and Art, by the way) opens its new group exhibition “Seh die Welt in Trümmern liegen” (See the World in Ruins) at the Backsteinboot. The space is a remnant of Spandau’s 19th century armaments industry and is located on Eiswerder Island, in the middle of Lake Spandau – fitting for an exhibition that is a demonstration of solidarity with Ukraine. There will be a performance at 20h, with a live DJ set at 22h (you’re welcome to stay late given the possibly long journey home).

If you’ve found your way back by Sunday you can continue to show solidarity in unfamiliar places: The Berlin street paper Arts of the Working Class is organizing an “Arts, food and crafts market for nourishment” under the banner “Souls for Music” in the Atelier Gardens on the former BUFA grounds in Tempelhof. The event celebrates the magazine’s new edition and features books, fermented food by Mimi Ferments and a pop up restaurant (Hot Spell) by Caique Tizzi from 5pm (be sure to reserve). If that is too far to the south-west, you can check out the current exhibition at Spoiler, running all weekend. Titled “Strange Homes”, it’s about how living is a complex process and shows seven works, with a reading by Sophie Heck at the opening on Friday evening followed by a DJ. On Sunday there’s a barbecue with Johanna Ballweg and a performance by Dennis Fuchs. Sounds great, right? All you need to do is decide which place to go to.

FASHION, JEWELRY AND INTERIOR DESIGNS WITH A STORY — FOUR-DAY POP-UP EVENT FROM WHITE LABEL PROJECT

FASHION, JEWELRY AND INTERIOR DESIGNS WITH A STORY — FOUR-DAY POP-UP EVENT FROM WHITE LABEL PROJECT

You can appreciate everything at face value, but it’s learning the stories beneath that tightens bonds between people and the things around us. Starting today (23.06.2022), Berlin-based design platform White Label Project will be returning for a four-day fashion, jewelry and design pop-up that puts stories front and center. We’ve been fans of this platform for a while: since 2019 the initiative has been showcasing slow creations from artisans in fashion and design, supporting communities and encouraging sustainable production. The market includes the likes of ceramics, jewelry and accessories by Ukraine’s Gunia Project, handmade bags made by the Wayuu people of Colombia by Hilo Sagrado and hand-woven Moroccan carpets by Limala. All in all, 30 mostly women-owned fashion and design labels from around the world will be selling their pieces and sharing their stories.

The program starts at 10h every day so you can meet the designers, enjoy coffee and croissants, and pick up the best of the pieces. If you’d rather come late, there will be discussions and drinks on Friday (24.06) between 17-21h with a Pisco Sour bar and wine from the likes of Kolonne Null. So put on your shoes, venture over to Kreuzberg’s Denizen House, and travel the world through design and fashion…

GREEN DAYS: FLOWER MARKET, DIY WORKSHOPS, CONCERTS, PAINTING & FOOD TRUCKS ON POTSDAMER PLATZ

GREEN DAYS: FLOWER MARKET, DIY WORKSHOPS, CONCERTS, PAINTING & FOOD TRUCKS ON POTSDAMER PLATZ

This week, Berlin will be a little bit greener, flowerier and more sustainable. Why? The Green Days open-air festival on Potsdamer Platz. Taking place this weekend (24–26.06.2022), the green-themed event will feature a flower market, live concerts and painting and DIY workshops that will please hobby gardeners and plant fans alike. Whether you’ve got a balcony, garden, or just a windowsill, there’s a diverse selection of plants and flowers to match any patch. You can also roll up your sleeves with creative DIY workshops: learn to make (dry) flower bouquets and wreaths to decorate your front door or dining table, create your own mosaic flower pot from broken crockery and old tiles, and make a macramé keychain (re- and upcycling is a strong theme here). Food-wise, there’s plenty to eat with Brammibals, Posh Bar and food trucks from Son Kitchen and Fritten Mafia plus live entertainment to bring the good vibes. Expect music from the likes of Cosma JoyMarvin Brooks and Leona Berlin. A plant-filled weekend for all the family: sounds like summer to us…

TAG DER ARCHITEKTUR 2022 — BERLIN ARCHITECTS OPEN THEIR DOORS

TAG DER ARCHITEKTUR 2022 — BERLIN ARCHITECTS OPEN THEIR DOORS

If you’re a keen urban aficionado, you are well advised to check out the best of Berlin’s architecture projects at this year’s Tag der Architektur. This weekend (25 & 26.06.2022), some of the city’s best-known architects will reveal their work and offer tours of their latest projects. On Saturday, you can join a guided tour of the “Zwillinge” apartment building duo on Treptow’s Schmollerplatz and Mitte’s “m17”, a block of flats made of lightweight concrete by Zanderrotharchitekten. The tour continues with a glass of frozé at the opening of architect firm Farland’s new offices in Charlottenburg. Then there’s Flussbad Berlin on Fischerinsel, a place that makes you dream of Sunday bathing sessions in the Spree. Last but not least, you can join the guided tours in the imposing and unique Villa Heike artists’ house before ending the weekend with a swim at Orankesee.

A SUMMER OF FREE OUTDOOR EVENTS — KULTURSOMMERFESTIVAL BERLIN STARTS THIS WEEKEND

A SUMMER OF FREE OUTDOOR EVENTS — KULTURSOMMERFESTIVAL BERLIN STARTS THIS WEEKEND

We all want to make the most of the summer. Luckily, Kultursommerfestival Berlin is here to bring culture to the city’s best outdoor spots, whether it’s by the water, in the park, in town or surrounded by historic buildings. Organized by Kulturprojekte Berlin, the three-month cultural program brings together 90 Berlin cultural institutions, venues, projects and partners. Events include the annual Fête de la Musique, productions and performances from Theaterdiscounter, HAU and festivals such as 48 Stunden Neukölln, Classic Open Air, CSD and more. The line-up also includes special summer events like open-air concerts, readings by the lido, an adventure day at the zoo, ballet on a boat and stargazing in the park. As for the venues, they’re as diverse as the events themselves: from the glamorous Friedrichstadt-Palast and the venerable Volksbühne to the Orankesee lido, municipal galleries, state museums and the city library.

Kicking things off is an open-air evening on 18.06.2022 at Tempelhof Airport which will see the historic airfield transformed into Berlin’s largest terrace bar. Assemble your favorite people, grab a deckchair and some cool drinks and let live musicians entertain you. At sunset you will be treated to a spectacular light and music performance from Compagnie Off from France, who are performing for the first time in Germany. Admission is free all evening (you can reserve your spot online). From then on until September, 90 events at 90 venues all over Berlin await you – all free, all outdoors.
