FINE-DINING FROM UKRAINE: KYIV RESTAURANT MIRALI TAKES OVER HORVÁTH FOR A CHARITY DINNER

FINE-DINING FROM UKRAINE: KYIV RESTAURANT MIRALI TAKES OVER HORVÁTH FOR A CHARITY DINNER

Kreuzberg meets Kyiv: Michelin-starred restaurant Horváth is teaming up with Ukrainian fine-dining restaurant Mirali for a special charity dinner next Tuesday (10.05.2022). To help raise funds for those affected by the war, Hovárth’s head chef Sebastian Frank and his team are making way for Mirali Dilbazi and his team from the Kyiv eatery. The collab is something of a meeting of minds: “I’ve heard a lot about him. I would have preferred to get to know his cooking under different circumstances, but we are happy to be able to assist him in this way,” says Frank. You will be able to sample a dinner from the visiting chefs, with all proceeds donated to Ukrainian drinks retailer Good Wine which provides 400 ready-cooked meals a day to people in Kyiv. On the seven-course tasting menu is a selection of seasonal Ukrainian cuisine with matching wine and drinks. All Horváth’s employees will forgo their wages in order to support Good Wine and fund the purchase of food for the meals. If you want to join for this memorable night, you can book your table online.

LABORATOIRE KONTEMPO — A FESTIVAL OF SOUND AND DISCOURSE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

LABORATOIRE KONTEMPO — A FESTIVAL OF SOUND AND DISCOURSE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

The creative and arts scene of the Democratic Republic of Congo has much to discover, and thanks to Acud Macht Neu you can dive into it right here in Berlin. The cultural collective is welcoming artists, academics and musicians from the DRC for Laboratoire Kontempo, a program of concerts, talks and exhibitions with some of the capital Kinshasa’s most innovative creators. Events continue tonight (05.05.2022) with an evening of talks offering an insight into the Kinshasa art scene, including “Partagisme” – a collective way of creating art found in the city. Meanwhile, this Saturday (07.05) Acud’s club and courtyard will host a lecture and performance about the colonial pasts of both Kinshasa and Berlin, plus some Congolese cuisine to try. Critical perspectives feature throughout the program, such as the concert and talk from pianist-songwriter David Shongo, who deals with the topic of the importation of second-hand electronics from Europe to the DRC (17.05). The music continues on 20.05 with Balade Musicale, a concert that dives into the history of Congolese music through the genre of hip-hop. You can view the full program – which also includes exhibitions at Haus der Statistik – online.

SO MUCH ART, SO LITTLE TIME — OUR TIPS FOR THE RUN UP TO GALLERY WEEKEND 2022

SO MUCH ART, SO LITTLE TIME — OUR TIPS FOR THE RUN UP TO GALLERY WEEKEND 2022

Next Friday (29.04) sees the start of Gallery Weekend 2022, with a packed program in the days leading up to it. You won’t be able to take in everything, but let us direct you to some of the highlights. Getting you in the mood is the group exhibition “Au-delà”, which opens tomorrow (22.04) at Schwarz Contemporary in Kreuzberg. On show will be art by Berlin-based artists Lisa Tiemann and Marlon Wobst, whose large-format felt works created a big impression at last year’s Positions fair at Tempelhof Airport. The show also features works by Polish conceptual artist Natalia LL, whose 1970s photos continue to influence today. Also opening early is Anahita Contemporary in Charlottenburg with the exhibition “Rivière Noire” featuring works by Daniel Butcher (from Saturday 23.04). Butcher’s latest series, “villes et visages”, is populated by futuristic cities and landscapes, recurring architectural elements, symbols and fantasy figures.

Next up, if you want to swap the opening crowds for a smaller, quieter show you should book a slot at Fka Six. Curators Pola van den Hövel, Marlene A. Schenk and Laura Helena Wurth have set up shop in a former jewelry store in the Ring Center in Friedrichshain and turned it into a place for non-commercial, progressive art. It’s home to “Notes on Fortnightism” from Gustav Düsing and Carson Chan, an exhibition that deals with the aftermath of the pandemic. Tickets for it are selling out quickly, so secure yours here. Meanwhile in Schöneberg: Heidi on Kurfürstenstraße is one of the newest galleries on the scene and is hosting the exhibition “past thought revised” from American artist Joan Jonas after opening its doors in September 2021. Housed in a former furniture store, the gallery will welcome video and performance art from Jonas starting next Thursday (28.04). Finally, experimental non-profit institution Callie’s is hosting “Bucolica. exe”, a show by performance artist Tintin Patrone based on a fictional character named “Heidi” (premiering 30.04).

THE NIGHTMARKET AT NÅPOLEON KOMPLEX: VINTAGE FASHION, CREATIVE DESIGNS, LIVE BANDS, DJS AND DRINKS ALL DAY LONG

THE NIGHTMARKET AT NÅPOLEON KOMPLEX: VINTAGE FASHION, CREATIVE DESIGNS, LIVE BANDS, DJS AND DRINKS ALL DAY LONG

Is your wardrobe in need of some new looks? Living room ready for a spring refresh? Then here’s a tip for the weekend: The Nightmarket, a two-day fashion and design market at Nåpoleon Komplex in Friedrichshain (23 & 24.04.2022). Fifty designers, curators and vendors will be setting up stalls for the special event, which, as the name suggests, is an all-day affair: ’til midnight on Saturday and 20h on Sunday. Many of the brands are based in Berlin, including Hny Hany, whose silk scarves are as versatile as they are creative, and Cotta Vintage, whose second hand selection features fabulous florals and frills. You’ll also find pre-loved staples from You had me at Vintage and 80s/90s eyewear styles from Dress your Mind. As for interior goods, fans of Miami pastel and macramé will feel right at home at Maison Malou’s stand. The design seller’s wacky, windy candles make a tongue-in-cheek addition to your mantle or bedside table.

You’ll want to take your time working your way round the cavernous hall of Nåpoleon Komplex, but there’s no hurry: besides shopping, there’s lots of other fun stuff to keep you entertained all day (and night). You’ll find a huge variety of street food, drinks and live bands plus an open air party with DJ sets including Afrofuturist cuts from Floyd Lavine and beats from Arno/Einzelkind and Ksenia Kuderyavets. Assemble your favorite folks, bring your biggest shopping bag and spend the day snapping up goodies and catching up with cocktails.

EGO, IDENTITY AND A FATHER-SON RELATIONSHIP ON THE BRINK — INDIE FILM “THE MAN WHO ATE THE WORLD” IN CINEMAS NOW

EGO, IDENTITY AND A FATHER-SON RELATIONSHIP ON THE BRINK — INDIE FILM “THE MAN WHO ATE THE WORLD” IN CINEMAS NOW

Imagine being middle-aged, with a successful career (and a failed marriage) behind you and children, alimony and a father with dementia to attend to. Such is the state of the protagonist of the film Der Mann, der die Welt aß (The Man who Ate the World) when we meet him. It prompts a massive personal and professional crisis, the course of which is painful to watch. As if in a frenzy, the father’s life slowly goes down the drain as he alienates pretty much everyone around him: his ex Lisa (Maja Schöne), his friend Ulf (Konrad Singer) and his brother Philipp (Max Mauff). All he wants is to be free. So what’s underneath it all? Depression, midlife crisis or burnout? It’s difficult to sympathize with this display of egotism and narcissism. And yet – or perhaps precisely because of this – there’s something captivating about seeing a man who, unable to cope with life, lashes out. Johannes Suhm not only stars as the son, but also co-directs (with Lena Lessing) and produces this independent, crowd-funded film.

Inspiration for Suhm’s debut as a feature filmmaker – he’s made two documentaries before – is the play of the same name by Nis-Momme Stockmann, who also co-produced the film. Suhm played the lead role in a production at the Erlangen Theater in 2012 before deciding to make a screen version. Almost documentary-like (cinematography: Tobias Kaufmann), the drama traces the despair of a human being. This Sunday (24.04.2022, 14h) the film celebrates its premiere at Babylon Mitte with its cast in attendance. Afterwards, a panel discussion will take place in collaboration with the Bundesforum Männer e.V., with panelists Simone Schmollak (Taz), Björn Süfke (therapist & author), Johannes Suhm and Dr. Dag Schölper (Bundesforum für Männer e.V.). The film will be released nationwide on 28.04.and can be seen in Berlin at Babylon Mitte, Kreuzberg’s Il Kino and Kino am Bundesplatz. You can find more information on the film’s website
