THE CURATOR’S SUITCASE — ART MEETS ACTIVISM WITH LECTURES, WORKSHOPS AND PERFORMANCES AT THE MAXIM GORKI THEATER

THE CURATOR’S SUITCASE — ART MEETS ACTIVISM WITH LECTURES, WORKSHOPS AND PERFORMANCES AT THE MAXIM GORKI THEATER

Who writes history? Will technology change things for the better? And are we humans really at the center of the world? These hard-hitting questions and many more are up for discussion at The Curator’s Suitcase, a three-week program of talks and performances held at the Maxim Gorki Theater as part of the Young Curators Academy project. The line-up reveals how “curators” (meaning any kind of artist, creative, academic or historian) can bridge art and activism to recast the world. Highlights include researcher Aouefa Amoussouvi’s multi-sensory “lecture ritual“, which looks at everything from cacao to chemistry to expose who really benefits from science (this Saturday, 09.04.2022). On 16.04, dancer Nirlyn Seijas will present a performance-lecture on the importance of gathering and collaboration among women. Meanwhile, writer Giuliana Kiersz’s “writing gathering” (23 & 24.04) is your chance to put pen to paper and create written work that shifts the boundaries of the possible (no experience required). Finally, on 23.04, artist Nile Koetting will perform “Evacuation Picnic +“, a piece inspired by the disaster preparation exercises which children commonly do in Koetting’s native Japan. You can explore the full program – which includes live action role play – on the Gorki website.

ARKAODA: THE PERFECT MIX OF BAR AND SMALL CLUB AT RICHARDPLATZ-KIEZ

ARKAODA: THE PERFECT MIX OF BAR AND SMALL CLUB AT RICHARDPLATZ-KIEZ

Berlin is full of places for a good night out – not least if you’re after a bar that isn’t just about cozy seating, wood-paneled walls and pool tables (though we’re a sucker for those, too). One venue taking the funky bar concept to a whole new level is multifunctional Arkaoda. As you stroll across Karl-Marx Platz, the glass frontage exposing intimate candlelit tables and muted walls might catch your eye. Thoughtfully arranged, the bar’s seating is perfect for a date night or catching up with your pals while actually being able to hear what they say. Had a few beverages (our go-to is the Gin Basil Smash or Pisco sour)? Great. It’s now time to head down some chic stairs to the even chicer basement designed by Studio SPC for perfectly-calibrated acoustics. That’s where Arkaoda has a trick up its sleeve: a multipurpose event space home to a rich program of concerts, live sets and parties – see their calendar for upcoming events. Oh, and if you’re paying a visit to Istanbul anytime soon, the sister venue there looks equally inviting and features a consistently great lineup. Back in Berlin, this Saturday (02.04.2022) sees Refuge Worldwide’s takeover in “Neighbourhood Dance” on both floors of Arkaoda from 22h.

THE SHORT SHOP POP-UP — FASHION, ACCESSORIES AND INTERIOR OBJECTS BY BERLIN CREATIVES

THE SHORT SHOP POP-UP — FASHION, ACCESSORIES AND INTERIOR OBJECTS BY BERLIN CREATIVES

The only drawback about flea markets in Berlin? That there aren’t more of them. Fortunately this weekend (01.-03.04.2022) there’s a suave alternative: the curated pop-up event “The Short Shop Pop Up“, which is now returning for its third edition. Behind the quarterly pop-up are four Berlin fashion designers, who showcase the work of various creatives alongside their own. This season’s line-up features the founders Lea Roesch (bags, coats), Adriana Quaiser from AQ (AQ-Caps, AQ-Bag), May Bernardi (women’s ready-to-wear clothing) and Julia S. Riedel from JSR Studio (textiles). Attentive curation makes for a diverse selection: how about upcycled sea glass earrings from Seayou to accompany a silver piece by Johanna Gauder? Or an illustration for your home by Serafine Frey, a one-of-a-kind vase from Distinctive Form or perhaps a scent by Fiilit parfum du voyage? Oh, and there’s food by Aileen Klein on Sunday, too. Alongside shopping the selection of goodies, you can also sip from the bar which comes courtesy of Berlin locals to fundraise for Ukraine (donations go to Mission Lifelineand Save the Children). The venue for all this is Gemini Berlin, a stylish showroom and event space situated a stone’s throw away from Maybachufer’s markets, cafes and all-round good vibes. Once you’ve picked up some fashion finds, why not finish off the afternoon with a canalside jaunt and make a day of it? It’s what spring days are made for.

INTERDISCIPLINARY, IMMERSIVE, INTERACTIVE: THE FORECAST FESTIVAL INVITES YOU TO SEE, LISTEN AND PARTICIPATE WITH TOPICS ALL ABOUT TOMORROW

INTERDISCIPLINARY, IMMERSIVE, INTERACTIVE: THE FORECAST FESTIVAL INVITES YOU TO SEE, LISTEN AND PARTICIPATE WITH TOPICS ALL ABOUT TOMORROW

The things that will concern us in the future are difficult to predict, but this year’s interdisciplinary 6th Forecast Festivalonce again allows us a small glimpse into the design and rethinking of what’s to come. The development of various projects from fields such as architecture, sound and science takes place in exchange and close collaboration between mentors such as Tatjana Bilbao, Mathilde Monnier and Emeka Ogboh – among others – and their mentees. The results of the artists, performers, designers, choreographers and creatives can be seen at the Radialsystem on the 8th and 9th of April, 2022. The former pumping station on the Spree will be transformed into an interactive experience space as part of the festival.

Ulli Lust will kick things off with a sneak preview of her graphic novel “Die Frau als Mensch” – a comical yet critical look at gender and art in history. Parallel to this, there will be a workshop by dancer and choreographer Simona Deaconescu, together with musician Guru Olombelo Ricky around rhythm and movement. On Saturday, Francesca Bria (a digital policy expert) and Evgeny Morozov will discuss topics such as digital public space, cryptocurrencies and DAOs (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations), while later in the evening, sound artist and musician Iman Jesmi will explore the acoustic and olfactory memories of various European cities (“Sensory Souvenir“). There will also be a chance to participate: you’ll have the opportunity to share sounds you have recorded of your surroundings – be it the street you live on or the café around the corner – with other participants during the workshop. We say: The next interactive festival weekend is ready to go!
