BERLIN PHOTO WEEK: CELEBRATING PHOTOGRAPHY AND LEARNING FROM THE MASTERS

BERLIN PHOTO WEEK: CELEBRATING PHOTOGRAPHY AND LEARNING FROM THE MASTERS

This week is the start of Berlin Photo Week (10.–13.10.2019), bringing together artists from across the globe to celebrate all things photography. Back for its second year, the festival is already staking its claim in the not-to-miss calendar. There will be events around the city, but the week centers around Kraftwerk Berlin, with three floors to explore. Highlights include The Funplace, with interactive installations to create your own photographs, and The Exhibition which includes works by renowned photographer Thomas Hoepker and Berghain’s Sven Marquardt. Meanwhile The Conferencefeatures two days of talks from industry experts. The week concludes with the presentation of the annual EyeEm Photo Awards, the biggest photography competition in the world with a party to match. If that’s not enough, there will be gallery openings, photo walks and workshops held around the city as well. Whether you’re an amateur photographer, a professional, or simply an admirer, it’s the perfect place to come across new images and the stories behind them. EDITION F & FEMALE FUTURE FORCE DAY: THE ONLINE COMMUNITY FOR WOMEN TAKES TO THE STAGE

EDITION F & FEMALE FUTURE FORCE DAY: THE ONLINE COMMUNITY FOR WOMEN TAKES TO THE STAGE

Since 2014, the online magazine Edition F has inspired us with relatable journalism that gives women a broad platform and demonstrates that – as the founders put it – “feminism is something for everyone”. Edition F is able to deal with difficult topics in a lighthearted way, and has quickly established itself as an institution for women, not least through initiatives like the Female Future Force Day, where you can plan your professional future in workshops and lectures; the 25 Frauen Award, which honors women’s success in business; and the podcast Achterbahn featuring founders Susann Hoffmann and Nora-Vanessa Wohlert. Meanwhile, their new podcast “Alles Anders” features Lana Wittig talking to women in industry about the working environment. Community is a big part at Edition F. In addition to in-house articles, the readers themselves write on topics that inspire and move them. So if like us you are a fan of Edition F and would like to support this great platform, sign up for the newsletter and come to FFF Day on 12.10.2019, featuring exciting lectures, panels and master classes that focus on personal, professional and social development. GOOD TO TALK: EXPLORING THE FUTURE OF ART AND LEARNING WITH PERFORMANCES AND PANELS

GOOD TO TALK: EXPLORING THE FUTURE OF ART AND LEARNING WITH PERFORMANCES AND PANELS

To discuss art beyond established institutions is not as easy as one might think, as the spaces aren’t there. That’s precisely why we need to talk: specifically this Saturday (28.09.2019) at Kantine am Berghain at the second edition of Good to Talk. Founded in 2017 by a small circle of Berlin gallerists, this interdisciplinary discussion format seeks to stimulate a new exchange of ideas, including how art interacts with business, fashion and digitization. This year, the central question revolves around the future of art education and the role art plays today and its impact on other fields. The answers are provided not only by Berlin art and culture players – including Berlin Art Week and Eigen + Art Lab – but also those in business, media and tech industries. The day includes panels on topics such as AI and startup culture as well as performances and artistic interventions. And as if that wasn’t reason enough to go and have your say: as a brand new Good to Talk media partner, Cee Cee is giving away free tickets. GOING THE DISTANCE: CULTURE, RUNNING AND THE BERLIN MARATHON

GOING THE DISTANCE: CULTURE, RUNNING AND THE BERLIN MARATHON

The hype around the Berlin Marathon is undeniably huge — and rightfully so. This Sunday thousands of runners will be taking over Berlin on the 40km jaunt through the streets. But whether you’re running or cheering, everyone can join in on the festivities. We recommend diving into the culture of running by stopping into the Beinghunted gallery space for an exhibition and presentation from French brand Distance Athletics. The pop-up, from 27–29.09, centers on the newly launched Distance Book Series, where for the first edition the photographer Thibaut Grevet traveled into the highlands of Kenya to photograph the legendary village of Iten, named “The Home of Champions”. Extra tip: If you still need to gear up for the run, head over to Spreeläuferin Prenzlauer berg. This Berlin concept store is run by marathoners themselves, so you can be sure they have the expertise to fit you with the perfect gear. No matter if you’re an athlete or simply interested in the culture behind it all, this weekend is one not to miss. ITEN, the first volume of the Distance book series with photography from Thibaut Grevet, is available at the Distance shops in Lyon and Paris or online.

FUTURIUM: A NEWLY OPENED SPACE FOR VISIONS OF TOMORROW’S WORLD

FUTURIUM: A NEWLY OPENED SPACE FOR VISIONS OF TOMORROW’S WORLD

Ever dreamt what it would be like to play noughts and crosses with a robot? Well now you can with the opening on 05.09.2019 of the Futurium. This “Festival of the Future“, celebrates tommorrow’s world with workshops, live music, lectures and guided tours. You’ll get answers to some pretty big questions, and you can contribute your own future predictions too. Conceptually and architecturally, the building is divided into three zones: the lab in the basement for workshops, two studios by the restaurant on the ground floor that host events, and the first floor gallery that includes range of concepts. We were invited to stop by beforehand and were overwhelmed by how the Futurium critically and holistically explores competing visions of the future. The highlight: the Skywalk on the roof, allowing an incredible view of the city and the alternative energy system that powers the Futurium. The future is coming – and you can be there to see it happen, free of charge. (Text: Hanna Komornitzyk / Photos: Renou Schnepp & Jan Windszus)
