OPEN ARTIST STUDIOS IN THE FORMERLY ABANDONED VILLA HEIKE

OPEN ARTIST STUDIOS IN THE FORMERLY ABANDONED VILLA HEIKE

The Villa Heike is little–known in Berlin given its enigmatic history. It was first built as the private home of German industrialist Richard Heike and headquarters to his meat production facilities. Following Heike’s murder in 1945 and the GDR take-over of the building in 1951, it became a secret storage facility for the Stasi, accumulating over 11km worth of files. The building closed after German reunification in 1990 and remained abandoned for 25 years until Architect Christof Schubert realized its potential. The entire villa has been renovated – while preserving the original architectural elements – as artists’ studios and a gallery. Two of its first tenants, French–German artist couple Johanna Dumet and Manuel Wroblewski, have transformed the penthouse into a captivating playhousefor Gallery Weekend Berlin 2019. She a painter and he a sculptor, their space is filled with large scale colorful art objects. Stop by their open studio exhibition, entitled Fire, and enjoy one of the first public looks into the Villa Heike in over 25 years. LUCKY TRIMMER’S BIRTHDAY BASH: AN EXTRAVAGANZA OF DANCE, ART AND PERFORMANCE

LUCKY TRIMMER’S BIRTHDAY BASH: AN EXTRAVAGANZA OF DANCE, ART AND PERFORMANCE

If you’re staying in Berlin over Easter and looking to be inspired and entertained, then join us at Lucky Trimmer’s birthday special for an evening of dance, performance and artistry. Founded as a platform for international and local dance artists of all genres, Lucky Trimmer has been delighting audiences with their short-format festivals for 15 years. Taking place on the 19/20.4.2019, the 27th edition sticks to the company’s bite-size format with a program of eight performances, each no longer than 10 minutes. The pieces, many of which will make their German debut, have been carefully selected for their novelty, ingenuity and originality. Piquing our interest in this diverse program are a Burton-esque bride, a duo’s modern take on tango, and a faun performing with its synchronized swimming nymphs. And if that’s not enough, Lucky Trimmer is kicking off celebrations today (18.04.2019) with a free open stage where you can vote for your favorite from 15 aspiring artists and give them to chance to perform at the main event. (Text: Lucy Thorpe / Photos: Lucky Trimmer, Santiago Barreiro & Joe Goergen)

We’re giving away two tickets to the Saturday evening performance. For a chance to win, email us at win@ceecee.cc with why you want to join – make sure to include your phone number and Instagram handle.

HOUSE OF VANS BERLIN POP–UP: A WEEKEND CELEBRATION OF LOCAL ART, SKATING, MUSIC AND STREET CULTURE

HOUSE OF VANS BERLIN POP–UP: A WEEKEND CELEBRATION OF LOCAL ART, SKATING, MUSIC AND STREET CULTURE

Grab your skateboard and brush up on your technique this weekend; we’re headed to Berlin’s newest pop-up skatepark to compete in the best trick competition. But maybe your skate skills are a little too rusty, and you’d rather watch from the sidelines alongside street art, local skate brands, and free concerts. This weekend, House of Vans, Mecca for skate culture stalwarts, will host their biggest event to date in Berlin: a three-day celebration of our boundless creative scene. Hear live music from alt rock to rap to indie from Octavian and Nothing But Thieves amongst the eleven musicians and DJs performing. Go under the gun for a flash tattoo by Max Ludwig or browse the community market for labels like Shanghai Tofu and Champagne Towers. Art on display ranges from contemporary graffitists to vintage rave posters from the ’90s, chronicling skate culture in Germany. The festivities this weekend are all free, so check the program to join in on the fun. (Text: Michael Rice / Photos: House of Vans)

OTTO: GERMAN COMFORT FOOD AND NATURAL WINE FROM VADIM OTTO URSUS AND JAN HUGEL AT MRS ROBINSON’S

OTTO: GERMAN COMFORT FOOD AND NATURAL WINE FROM VADIM OTTO URSUS AND JAN HUGEL AT MRS ROBINSON’S

Vadim and Jan have something in common: an appreciation for premium-quality products and recently, a pop-up restaurant named “Otto” after another thing they share, their middle names. The portions on their à la carte menu are perfect to share. The sourdough bread from Domberger Bakery, served with raw milk butter and pickles, is a must, especially when ordered with a pickled egg. Continue your meal with the wild boar tartare and smoked sturgeon stuffed with cabbage and a cured egg yolk dip. It’s the epitome of German comfort food. Likewise, the beautiful beetroot with sloe juice, oxalis and crème fraiche not only look like abstract art but taste sublime. In the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve, the 27-year-old Vadim experiments with all that Brandenburg can deliver, and his passion for fermentation appears thematically in every dish. Definitely leave room for the dried plum cake with black walnuts. Jan Hugel of Wagner Cocktail Bistro provides the artisan German wines. Local has never tasted better.
