ANJA MARTIN RECOMMENDS: AN INTRODUCTION TO (SUPPER CLUB)

ANJA MARTIN RECOMMENDS: AN INTRODUCTION TO (SUPPER CLUB)

What does May taste like? Goat’s cheese fresh from the farm, edible flowers and the first blush of strawberries — according to João Lourenço and Laura-Ximena Villanueva Guerra, at least. In March 2017, the duo launched a monthly supper club to celebrate the best local produce available at any given time of year. Sure, you can find pre-ripened avocados all year round in Berlin — but shouldn’t we be focusing on nature’s seasonal offerings instead? Chef João (Grill Royal and The Store at Soho House) und cook / confectioner Laura (The Store at Soho House and Tausendsünd) have set out to remind us that true superfood is closer to our doorsteps than we think: blueberries instead of goji berries, parsnip not papaya. All organic, naturally. And regional. At this supper club, by the time dessert arrives at the table, you feel like your fellow guests are old friends. THE BUTCHER BERLIN — KICKING OFF THE SUMMER BBQ SEASON

THE BUTCHER BERLIN — KICKING OFF THE SUMMER BBQ SEASON

Summer: it’s got to happen sooner or later, right? We (and our weather app) are daring to believe that could be this coming weekend. Time to fling open the doors and reconnect with the outdoors. That’s precisely what the team behind The Butcher was thinking too. The burger restaurant in the Sir Savigny Hotel is kicking off the BBQ season in their charming courtyard garden this Saturday (6.5.17). The grill will of course be lit, and in addition to The Butcher’s mouth-watering offering of prime Aberdeen-Angus beef burgers, beef hot dogs and grilled corn will be served. Quench your thirst with a “Cleaver Club” gin cocktail from Gin Sul (the house signature), ice cold beer, or a glass of rosé. We’ll be taking care of the summer soundtrack, by the way, with Sven Hausherr from Cee Cee spinning his favorite tracks. Come on down! P.S. Guests will have the chance to win a night in the Sir Savigny Hotel, in case you’re in the mood to extend your day in Charlottenburg to a West Berlin mini-break. (Text: Nina Trippel)

SABKO NEDDERMEYER RECOMMENDS: FOODISCH

SABKO NEDDERMEYER RECOMMENDS: FOODISCH

You know how it goes: Your Facebook friend count stands around 1000, yet you eat dinner alone, bathed in the soft glow of your laptop screen. Here to change that is Simo Azzaoui, who recently returned to Berlin after a stint in New York, where he conceived his social dining revolution: evenings centred around food, talks and art in private homes. All without smartphones — yes, they’re banned. But here, you won’t need notification distraction. You’ll be too busy enjoying home-cooked meals created by aspiring chefs, short talks on topics such as vertical farming or sustainable food, and art experiences such as music performances or guided meditations. Whatever you’re into, there’ll be an evening to match on Foodisch’s website, which was launched in December 2016 and is regularly updated with the latest events. It’s hard to think of a more stimulating way to spend an evening. (Text: Sabko Neddermeyer / Photos: Simo Azzaoui)

DAS BRUNCH: ALL-DAY FEASTING IN EXTRAORDINARY LOCATIONS

DAS BRUNCH: ALL-DAY FEASTING IN EXTRAORDINARY LOCATIONS

Long, lazy, boozy brunches set in inspiring surroundings? Sounds like our kind of Saturday. Since summer 2014, Sophie von Oswald has been hosting her roaming breakfast club, Das Brunch, in some of the most exciting locations around town. This Saturday it’s time for round nine in Wedding’s Silent Green Kunstquartier, a former crematorium. An all-day breakfast menu is se rved from 10am onwards, offering a vegan, vegetarian or meat-inclusive brunch plate inspired by the Persian heritage of von Oswald and her sister, Xenia, with whom she runs the events. This time around, think poached eggs or a black bean breakfast burger, sumac pickled onion, Moroccan spiced chickpeas and asparagus. Then there’s challa french toast doused in vanilla spiced rhubarb, cardamom butter and maple syrup, coffee from Mars Küche and a Bloody Mary bar. Arnaldo & Milena Buchholz will provide the soundtrack to the day. The concept is flawless, the execution effortless and the vibes good all round. We only wish Das Brunch took place every weekend. NOSH BERLIN: THE CITY’S FIRST-EVER JEWISH FOOD WEEK

NOSH BERLIN: THE CITY’S FIRST-EVER JEWISH FOOD WEEK

From to bagels and blintzes to pickles and pastrami, Jewish cooking traditions have become firmly entrenched in this city’s burgeoning dining options over the past few years. Yet for all our favorite kosher enterprises, there are many more still relatively under the radar. That’s all about to change thanks to Laurel Kratochvila of Fine Bagels and food culture journalist, Liv Fleischhacker, who are behind Nosh (meaning “food” in Yiddish) — the city’s inaugural festival of Jewish food. Kicking off this Sunday (19.3) with a special edition Breakfast Market at Markthalle Neun, the week’s drool-worthy line-up includes cooking classes, food demonstrations, talks, book presentations and film screenings. On Friday (24.3), choose from one of four Shabbat supper club directions from across the diaspora: Roman Jewish, Persian, modern Eastern European or Yemenite. Peruse the full program and prepare for your mouth to water. (Text: Anna Dorothea Ker / Photos: Simone Hawlish / Rebecca Crawford)
